To think that filling the kettle isn't "a thing"?

At least one person agrees with me so I thought I'd see if more did!

DH keeps complaining "Only I fill the kettle up!"

Hmm

He says "I fill it up and then later, I go to use it and it's all empty again!"

I'd not really reacted to these complaints though I had thought "Wtf?"

Then a mate of his heard him and said, "what are you talling about? People just fill it and boil it as they use it! You put in the amount you need and boil it!"

DH seemed to be under the impression that the kettle should be consistently full!

AIBU to think DH is wrong and his friend and I are right?

Oh and she will reboil water once but never more than that as it "boils the life out of it".

She has never managed to give an even vaguely logical explaination for this, even after I pointed out that as water most definitely doesnt scream for mercy as its being boiled we can safely assume that its dead before it hits the kettle.

Itmustbemyage · 17/05/2017 14:36

We have an urn at work to stop the kettle wars.
Freshly boiled is nicer it's true with the office coffee tbh it doesn't make much difference

froyotogo · 17/05/2017 14:37

I'm with your husband on this. An empty kettle is a mean and nasty thing to come across. I fill after I've used. You never know when you might need a hot drink. And I don't believe in boiling just one mug of water. Are people insane?

BonfiresOfInsanity · 17/05/2017 14:38

I have a boiling water tap so no-one has this argument in my house. Its the only argument we don't have but it's one less thing anyway.

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/05/2017 14:38

now changing the toaster settings is a very contested issue....

Deaths have been threatened in this house over that. DD is a bugger for it.

You put your bread in the toaster and come back to ..... warm bread. Not toast, no evidence of browning, just warm fucking bread. What. Is.The. Point?!!

NoSquirrels · 17/05/2017 14:39

This thread is hilarious- I can't imagine working in an office where people are fuming about having to fill a kettle and wait for it to boil! That's why you offer to make a round, no? So a) your cuppa is exactly to your requirements and b) so you can have a break in the kitchen with a bit of light dawdling?

gillybeanz · 17/05/2017 14:40

I just put in enough for who needs a brew at that time, or for what I need.
Otherwise you are boiling water unnecessarily and wasting electricity/ bigger bills. Every little saving helps. Grin

steppemum · 17/05/2017 14:43

I empty old water, and then put in just enough for the number of people drinking tea/coffee.
Never use previously boiled water, would never fill it for next person, because I don't know if they are making one cup or three, and would never boil a full kettle when only need one cup.

coconutcats · 17/05/2017 14:46

When I moved in with my DP's dad for a while he did this too! Very odd. The kettle was always full to the brim, and I was a bit bemused that they didn't just fill it as and when.

steppemum · 17/05/2017 14:47

'boiled the life out of the water'

water does taste different when it has been boiled. It also makes less tastey tea.
The problem is that tea needs just boiling fresh water, and coffee is better with water that was boiled 5 minutes ago, and is slightly less hot. So the refillers and reboilers must be all coffee drinkers

nocampinghere · 17/05/2017 14:47

no no no
always fresh water each time i boil it, reboiled water, blurgh
and yes i only put as much as i need

HotNatured · 17/05/2017 14:48

Reboiling water is bad for your health. Google it ! I always pour the old water down the sink and boil just enough for me.

PolaDeVeboise · 17/05/2017 14:49

. I read an article years ago that re-boiling changes the chemical consitution of the water and it COULD (ridiculously remote chance) cause a stomach upset. Ever since then, I have insisted on fresh water every time I boil the kettle. I do, however, use only the amount I need. My co-workers LOVE me. Grin

ItalianScallion · 17/05/2017 14:50

Boil what you need and tip any extra down the sink. It's helps keep the pipes clear and prevents limescale in the kettle.

PerkingFaintly · 17/05/2017 14:50

We can start a trend together, howabout.Grin

How much do you fill it though? One cupful? So the next person might come along and think you "mean and nasty" because they are making drinks for five?

Or to the brim? So you are wasting almost an entire kettle when the next person comes along and only wants a single cuppa?

And what if nobody comes along for a day or two? Do you just leave it there all stale?

I fill after I've used. You never know when you might need a hot drink.
Is this because you have to walk 3 miles to a well to drag water up in a bucket? Because it makes no sense whatsoever if you - like most people - have a tap right next to you.

YANBU.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 17/05/2017 15:11

it is a thing here...but I have a mahoosive great LeCreuset kettle and a range, so ideally the kettle should be filled and sitting on the kettle plate AT ALL TIMES to be brought over to the gashob if it needs to be brought back to the boil.
AND must be filled at night so there is a kettle full of water ready for a vat of coffee ASAP in the morning.
In the summer it tends to sit looking a bit sad on the gas hob, and just gets filled with however much is required. I keep meaning to get a smaller summer kettle, but dh thinks we should just get an electric one.

it take dh forever to keep up with the seasonal changes.

Jux · 17/05/2017 16:26

If we did what your dh does, then we'd have tea/coffee full oflumps of limescale, and also the tea would taeof dust. Horrible.

Furthermore, when the kettle's always full and being boiled, it wouldn't last 6months - our water can kill a kettle that quickly! Even an expensive one can die in a year.

Tell him not to do that in Devon, our water's crap (and our water rates are the highest in the country).

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/05/2017 16:39

Isn't it normal to make a round of tea at work? Confused. I'd hate to work somewhere where people selfishly just made tea for themselves! Mind you, where I work, we make a pot of tea at a time Grin

amusedbush · 17/05/2017 16:43

I'd hate to work somewhere where people selfishly just made tea for themselves!

I work in a busy Faculty office within a university and so we're constantly in and out at meetings all over campus. People here tend to grab a drink when they can.

Firesuit · 17/05/2017 16:58

I'd hate to work somewhere where people selfishly just made tea for themselves!

Drinking in rounds only works if you want drink in the same quantities and at the same times as everyone else.

Firesuit · 17/05/2017 17:01

My full-size kettle has markers that go down to 0.3 litres, when I make a cup I throw out the dregs of water (and the loose fragments of limescale on the bottom) and put in just enough water for one cup. Doing that and boiling it takes less time than boiling a pre-filled full kettle would.

MyFavouriteName · 17/05/2017 17:07

I use making tea as an opportunity to get up from my desk and stretch my legs. I don't want other people making one for me so I don't for others. Also our team has 30 people in. I'm not making that many cups of tea. However there is no issue with kettles in my office as we have a boiling water tap.

Your oh is wrong op. Now if he was moaning about being the only person ever to replace the toilet paper then he would have a point.......
