to not understand why I need to change name on drivers license?

My job requires me to complete a DBS check
I brought along my passport and drivers license which are both in my maiden name and my marriage certificate and a electricity letter to show change of name and address
For some reason this wasn't acceptable for me to not have updated my driving license ( I got married before getting my licence but obviously passport was in maiden so I just got the licence in that!! )
It is actually a problem when getting a DBS check?

£1000 fine if driving licence isn't updated if that's an incentive!!

But why? Lots of people use maiden name through married life! And you don't have to change your passport!

I thought that you could use your married name or your maiden name but not both at the same time.

Mines in my maiden name as I still use it generally.

I never had a problem using my drivers license under my maiden name for my dbs despite applying under my married name. Theres nothing official to say whether your changing your name or not after your married anyway so theres no reason it should flag up.

Your going by a different name depending on when it suits you so. The I'd documents are in different names which is why they won't accept it as proof. You need to use 1 name or the other.

You need to choose one name or the other - you do not have to assume your husbands name upon marriage but if you do you need to change all your documents to your new name - the problem is you've changed your utility bill but nothing else . Don't you have a bill in your given name you can use?

My mortgage, doctors and dentist are in my married name and everything else maiden name. You can use both as long as it's not for fraudulent purposes,

My diving license is still in my maiden name, I've been married 17 years. When I've had to show my license to the police (x2 accidents ) I just bring my marriage certificate too. It hasn't been a problem.

Passport change/renewal costs money and you are allowed to keep in maiden name. Driving license name change does not and yes, you an get fined if not updated. (unless you are doing it as part of the 10 year/new photo renewal)

You can use both (I do) but it is a red-tape pain in the arse and probably easier to bite the bullet and decide one way or the other- mostly for ID situations like this, when you're guaranteed not to be able to find the correct supporting ID in the right name!

icelolly you are not fined if you keep your maiden name on your license. It's perfectly legal to use both names.

You do not need to choose one or another. It's perfectly fine to use both for different things. You can even have both names in your passport!

If you are doing a DBS online it will ask your employer for the driving licence number. Your number has your surname in it so if it doesn't match the name on the application it won't let you process it.

You can call yourself whatever you want as long as it's not for the purposes of fraud.

It's quite worrying/concerning/upsetting that more women aren't aware that it's perfectly legal to use both names, as long as you do not intend to deceive.

I did a DBS check online - licence in maiden name and application in married name - and it was fine.

As far as the DBS goes it doesn't matter what name you use but the selection of documents will all have to be in that name.
Simple as.

Tippexy that's interesting because I had tried before and it wouldn't let me. I might give the DBS service a call tomorrow as it would make my life so much easier if we could do it.

Amazing isn't it. Although one of my friends was convinced i would be breaking the law if I didn't change my name when I got married

Are you using an online application system? If so then it's possible the system won't allow the application to progress because the driving licence number doesn't match the surname on the application. A way round it would be to use your maiden name, and add your married name as a 'known by any other name' and use date of marriage and current date for the dates from and to.

For a paper form your id being in your previous name is fine as long as you have documents to support change of name, such as a marriage certificate. The driving licence would be left off the form because of the invalid driving licence number.

In some sectors it can be common for a woman to keep her maiden name as her professional name but use her married name in her personal life. In this case she would show she was using both names concurrently on the form by using the above method.

Or just update your driving licence!

There was a bit on the paper counterpart saying something like "if you use another name for any reason fill it in here", my DL was in my unmarried name so I just handwrote my married name on that part of the paper counterpart. No problem. Don't know what the newfangled version is now driver records are paperless, but there ought to be something.

I updated my drivers license because it was free at the time but my passport is in my maiden name as it had 8 years left on it and I'll be buggered if I'm paying the £70 (or whatever the fee is) to update it sooner than I need to. I don't deceive and it's fine to use both names!
