To tip the takeaway delivery person

So, takeaway ordered. They have added on a delivery charge. Would you still tip the delivery person ??

My dad tried to tip delivery guy on christmas eve last year, delivery guy refused and got embarrassed. When I've ordered online cos I can't get out to get food myself I pay online and never have any spare change around anyway, they usually just hand it over and turn to go there seems to be little expectation of tips.

JasmineBuckles · 13/05/2017 21:44

We just round up, never accept change.

RayofFuckingSunshine · 13/05/2017 21:44

If I'm paying cash I always overpay and tell them to keep the change. If I've prepaid by card then I don't.

craftykaratechop · 13/05/2017 21:47

Always, well almost always - if it was really late I wouldn't. It's poorly paid and I'd feel 'cheap' not to.

WatchingFromTheWings · 13/05/2017 21:48

If it arrives on time, I tip them. If it's late, no I don't.

I used to waitress and often did deliveries. I'd food is late it's generally down to the kitchen being busy, not the driver being slow. Unless of course the food is cold then it's more than likely down to the driver.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 13/05/2017 21:52

I usually give at least £1. They must need the money or why else would you be delivering food on a Saturday night when you could be home? And yes, my food always arrives quickly and piping hot.

WatchingFromTheWings · 13/05/2017 21:53

the best tippers were people from council estates and the poorest areas.

I found this too.

I remember once taking a large meal to a local business man. Massive posh house, big expensive cars in drive. Made me hang around 15 minutes while he hunted for his cheque book (!!). Not so much as a penny tip. Wages for this job are pretty poor. Often the tips would be the only thing making it worth while.

Mu123 · 13/05/2017 21:55

The delivery drivers here are taxi drivers, so am always mindful they may lose a good fare. Always let them keep the change and a couple quid on top

PenguinOfDoom · 13/05/2017 21:58

I always give then a couple of quid. They get paid peanuts, have to deal with shit customers and are constantly at risk of mugging or people trying to steal their mopeds. Poor bastards.

sailorcherries · 13/05/2017 21:58

I always tip unless I have no change whatsoever and have paid using my card.

coconuttella · 13/05/2017 22:01

how exceptional can the delivery of a Chinese can be?

Difficult to see how I'm normal delivery... hence why I don't tend to tip. All tipping does is enable companies to pay delivery drivers less. Do you tip shop assistants or McDonald's staff?

WhereTheFuckIsElsa · 13/05/2017 22:03

Excuses mate.... Do you tip in general? Hotels, restaurants???

FlowerPowerPotter · 13/05/2017 22:10

One of my good friends has started doing takeaway deliveries on Friday and Saturday nights to earn extra money and it's a pretty shitty job, being out on a bicycle or motorbike in all sorts of weather for minimum wage. I always give the delivery person a pound or two - my friend really appreciates it if he can make an extra £10 or so on a night shift in tips.

PenguinOfDoom · 13/05/2017 22:15

I'm always amazed at the excuses people come out with because they're too tight to tip someone on minimum wage for providing them a service they didn't want to do for themselves.

AntiGrinch · 13/05/2017 22:16

Off topic a bit: do you tip a mobile hair dresser?

NoodleNinja · 13/05/2017 22:16

We always tip delivery drivers (and the window cleaner and sometimes taxi drivers) usually either rounding to the nearest pound or £1 or so. Nothing major but if they get a few of those a night it adds up.

My DP says exactly the same thing as PP's. Council estates and less wealthy areas are the best tippers. He says the wealthier areas are the meanest, most miserable lot when it comes to tipping or raised prices.

OsmosisJones · 13/05/2017 22:18

YABU to tip the delivery driver purely because it makes the rest of us look bad Grin

WhereTheFuckIsElsa · 13/05/2017 22:19

Did you tip? Did you eat? Was it good?

anothermalteserplease · 13/05/2017 22:19

I always tip delivery drivers

NoodleNinja · 13/05/2017 22:19

Anitgrinch If they do a good job then it depends on the price and what money I have at the time. If it's £35 and I haven't any change then I'll give the £40 and say keep the change. If It's £30 and I have £30 then they might only get that if I'm low on funds.

ImperialBlether · 13/05/2017 22:21

I always tip - in fact if I didn't have any spare change, I wouldn't order something. It's a crappy low-paid job and you're sitting at home eating a takeaway - it seems really mean not to give a tip.

witchofzog · 13/05/2017 22:26

Its tight not to imo. Delivery drivers get paid a pittance. Can you really not spare £1 ?

Gudgyx · 13/05/2017 22:28

I did deliveries for years, drivers here get the delivery charge, a meal at the end of the night and something for fuel, nowhere near enough to cover what you used though and definitely not enough to go towards maintenance of the car itself. Like pp said, it was always the most run down of places who were most generous at tipping. Bigger fancier houses very very rarely tipped at all.

That being said though, you could make quite decent money on a good night. About 100 on a Saturday night, about 50-60 on a week night. I did Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week for a while when I had no life. I did a news year eve once too 4pm til 11.45pm at double delivery charge! That was a good night!

Downyonder · 13/05/2017 22:43

Did you tip? Did you eat? Was it good?

Yes I tipped. I was so hungry I literally inhaled it, and it was very nice 😀

OP posts:
Redglitter · 13/05/2017 22:48

I don't. The takeaway I use charges £3 delivery. The driver gets that. It's never a huge order cos it's just me & it doesn't come very far so I think £3 is plenty
