To tip the takeaway delivery person

If I was employer and i know my delivery driver gets tips from a fair number of clients, I wouldn't be so inclined to increase their wage.... the driver is then put in an insidious position of having a wage that's lower than it would otherwise be, and having to rely on a roulette of the charity of others who may, or may not tip. Meanwhile, the UK does have plenty of NMW jobs in most places, so if the delivery driver deal was that bad, it's likely there would be other options.

If you want to help others less fortunate, it makes much more sense to give your tip to Save the Children or some similar charity.

I pay for takeaway food on JustEat or similar with my debit card and I never have cash on me. I didn't even know tipping delivery drivers was a thing.

What's so special abour being front facing? Why are they more important than the chef, or the cleaner, or the delivery driver who brought the food to the restaurant?

Agree... it's weird, and rather condescending, that some have these jobs that they seem to pity and pay tips (even though this perpetuates the situation), and other jobs it would never cross their mind to tip for!

Gosh, there are some frugal people on here who are proud of that.
Imo delivery drivers get paid very low​ wages. I tip £1 every time, or just over that to round up to nearest £. If I can afford it, but the takeaways I order aren't expensive and don't charge delivery over £15.
I'd tip a waiter/ress in restaurant (but a bigger %, as they do more service for longer), so why not a takeaway delivery driver? They are in front facing food service industry. And it'd cost me far more in petrol to drive to collect takeaway myself than a pound. Win win.

Wages for this job are pretty poor. Often the tips would be the only thing making it worth while.
So that's the fault of the employers. Not the paying customer. Sorry, but presuming you're in the UK, there is NO reason to have to leave a tip as your employers know they don't have to pay as much and will get the wages subsidised.
As we have a national minimum wage. Why do some minimum wage jobs expect tips but not others? My office data input job was minimum wage pre kids. No way would there be tips there from the public expecting their cheques etc paid in. Why if it's a pizza? Same principle. You're getting a service. Although some are deemed worthy of tips and some aren't obviously...

So why do people get a tip in your world for delivering a pizza but you presumably wouldn't for a doctor's appointment? Doctor sees you, you tip.
Nurse changes your dressing, you tip.

DH used to do deliveries for a local takeaway when he was at uni. He said it was one of the worst jobs he ever had because people were incredibly rude, often tried to argue with him about the cost at the door and occasionally would call for a delivery at the wrong address, then try and steal the food out of his top box while he was away from the bike. He says the affluent areas were the worst for not tipping and trying to argue that they should get a discount when he was at the door.

He always tips and so do I.

I don't. The takeaway I use charges £3 delivery. The driver gets that. It's never a huge order cos it's just me & it doesn't come very far so I think £3 is plenty

I did deliveries for years, drivers here get the delivery charge, a meal at the end of the night and something for fuel, nowhere near enough to cover what you used though and definitely not enough to go towards maintenance of the car itself. Like pp said, it was always the most run down of places who were most generous at tipping. Bigger fancier houses very very rarely tipped at all.

That being said though, you could make quite decent money on a good night. About 100 on a Saturday night, about 50-60 on a week night. I did Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday every week for a while when I had no life. I did a news year eve once too 4pm til 11.45pm at double delivery charge! That was a good night!

I always tip - in fact if I didn't have any spare change, I wouldn't order something. It's a crappy low-paid job and you're sitting at home eating a takeaway - it seems really mean not to give a tip.

Anitgrinch If they do a good job then it depends on the price and what money I have at the time. If it's £35 and I haven't any change then I'll give the £40 and say keep the change. If It's £30 and I have £30 then they might only get that if I'm low on funds.

We always tip delivery drivers (and the window cleaner and sometimes taxi drivers) usually either rounding to the nearest pound or £1 or so. Nothing major but if they get a few of those a night it adds up.

My DP says exactly the same thing as PP's. Council estates and less wealthy areas are the best tippers. He says the wealthier areas are the meanest, most miserable lot when it comes to tipping or raised prices.
