To hate "think 25" guidance

Im 28 and look my age! I'm ten years over the legal drinking age and Waitrose wouldn't let me buy a bottle of cider!

Yes I know I should have had ID but I don't drive so no license and I don't often have my passport with me.

I was looking forward to my bottle of cider as a treat for working hard in the library earlier today.

Yes you should protect underage children from buying alcohol but IABU to be annoyed with "think 25" now means everyone needs to show ID?

I got IDed for flowery scissors at 32 with a large 7m pg bump, staggering around with SPD and accompanied by my toddler. Hmm

I'm now at the stage where producing ID with 1981 on it causes serious confusion and a lengthy bout of frowning through mental arithmetic.

Most of the daft stories on this thread have been in supermarkets.
Yes.
The stupidest I've ever has was going to the local supermarket near school to buy cake for my 6th formers. I also bought a plastic cutlery set and napkins.

I was asked for ID for PLASTIC CUTLERY in full work wear, blazer and all and my staff badge!!

There were 16-18 year old students passing themselves laughing behind me in the queue. They had a good laugh at my expense for the rest of the week.

didn't want to point out that having worked with some reasonably badly behaved kids I know you can make better weapons from snapping safe objects than a plastic knife

Beerwench · 15/05/2017 20:48

Basket - absolutely. It's win win though for those that make the policies though isn't it, piling the responsibility of stopping all this stuff onto someone else, as in the poor sod behind the till.

I'm genuinely Shock at some of the things ppl have been refused sale of, I really can't see the logic behind restricting the sale of calpol for instance, and plastic cutlery?!

'now at the stage where producing ID with 1981 on it causes serious confusion and a lengthy bout of frowning through mental arithmetic."

I've got the mental arithmetic worked put pretty well now, though the size of the print on ID does cause the 'at arms length squinty thing' especially in low light Grin

BasketOfDeplorables · 15/05/2017 20:53

I'd also say its harder for the bar staff - the light is low, you've got to watch a bar where people pop up from all around you, not a sensible queue, customers are more likely to be drunk and obnoxious, and you're more likely to be working late at night and be on your feet for long gone periods, so the fact that bar staff are better at IDing and doing it in a non confrontational way has to be at least in part due to better training.

Cellardoor23 · 15/05/2017 21:05

I was going to say this mainly happens to me in supermarkets too. Not so much in bars though!

I had ID for the cutlery. Just meant that I had a lesson after lunch break with students saying things like 'careful miss. That's a dangerous weapon you've got there", "would you like a hand cutting the cake miss or are you going to be a big girl and do it yourself with the big knife" Grin
They were lovely students and we all had a right laugh about it.

I still maintain it's because we have a 6th form college so they get funny and sensitive checking things. But still, plastic cutlery with a cake and in full work wear, bit of a joke,

Beerwench · 15/05/2017 23:23

Maisy - I'm glad you got your 'dangerous' plastic cutlery Grin
it's all gone a bit bonkers really though in all seriousness.
'Nanny state' isn't a term I've heard in a while but someone is making these policies.... I'm truly shocked at some of the things you apparently need ID for.
