To have two sets of tea, coffee, sugar canisters?

Just wondering what you all do when one of the above canisters need cleaning? Do you wash and dry it and refill it straight away or what?

I only do washing up once a day (immersion heater only and no dishwasher). So, say, my sugar canister is dirty I will put it in with the washing up that night. But it means I am spooning the sugar out of the bag all day!

The set I have I love but cannot get another one anymore. It's old and came from Woolworths originally.

I don't want to mix and match a set in use iyswim.

Should I get rid of my current set and buy two new matching sets so I can instantly get a fresh one of out the cupboard to use?

Trivial, really, but I am chronically disorganised and am determined to fix these niggles.

You don't have wall cupboards?! Shock

Maybe that's why your kitchen is dusty. All my kitchen dust and grease settles rather conveniently on top of my wall cupboards, where it will remain until it's time to move out.

floraeasy · 13/05/2017 14:29

I can't actually remember the last time I washed them. Probably never. I wipe them when I wipe the counter

Yes, you see, I have no cleaning routine. Nothing actually happens automatically in this house. It's do-nothing and then a big production to get it visitor ready. That's really my problem.

My get a cleaning routine.

Are you procrastinating OP?

Do you know, I wonder if I am?

I've noticed that every time I have to do a big clean-up operation, I end up getting bogged down in some kind of side issue like this.

Reminds me of some of the people I've seen on Kim and Aggie's programme. Though I am not remotely in that condition.

If whoever does the washing up wipes down the surfaces, sink and hob every day it only takes a few minutes and is easier to maintain.

Katedotness1963 · 13/05/2017 14:33

I wipe down the outside every other day and wash/dry/refill when they empty.

floraeasy · 13/05/2017 14:33

DH does washing up. I don't think he's as thorough on the extraneous stuff as I might be if I did it.

I'm weird. I either do nothing at all. Or I need to do it (visitor shame!) and I get really detailed, exhaust myself, and don't go near it again until next time.

I really need to get a grip!!!

Could you keep a lookout for a spare set in charity shops? I wash mine if they're grimy or empty, but a quick wipe otherwise. I have two coffee jars. One is in the cupboard but hate spooning out of a jar that isn't the right one so I have a spare one for when the one in use is being washed.

Chocolateisa7adayfood · 13/05/2017 14:35

Op think carefully before getting a second set of canisters. Once you start off down this route, who knows where you'll end up? Do you have the storage space? And everything kept on a kitchen worktop gets greasy and needs washing frequently. Can you not just use the packets and keep them in cupboards. Get a sugar bowl if you don't like spooning from the bag.
Ultimately it's your choice. I'm sure you will make the right decision.

floraeasy · 13/05/2017 14:36

I'm a mucky pup. Half the time when I'm spooning coffee or sugar (whether bag, jar or canister) I always seem to spill some on the counter. Everything I touch I create more mess!

OP posts:
ScarlettFreestone · 13/05/2017 14:49

Spoon it over the sink then.

LadyPW · 13/05/2017 16:28

Give up sugar, then you'll not need a container Grin
I don't have sugar in tea and don't have coffee so I only have one container. Given that tea bags constantly create dust in it I rarely see the point, which is weird given my obsession with cleaning everything else!

topcat2014 · 13/05/2017 16:49

I wouldn't be able to make the vast quantity of drinks I consume if I didn't have everything in canisters by the kettle @flora, so don't worry there are canister users out there..

topcat2014 · 13/05/2017 16:50

Open sugar bowls are not a great idea, given that flies feed on things by spitting on them and then sucking everything up - given that flies will quite happily go from shit to sugar.

allegretto · 13/05/2017 16:53

I don't have any. Problem solved.

melj1213 · 13/05/2017 17:43

I don't understand how this is an issue ... how much coffee, tea and sugar do you use that would make it a huge inconvenience to spoon out of the bag for a few hours?

I don't wash our canisters regularly, if one is empty and I haven't refilled it before I'm doing the washing up I'll give it a quick rinse, otherwise they only ever all get cleaned when I'm having a big kitchen deep clean. In that case I'll just tip the contents into a normal bowl, wash & dry the canisters with the rest of the washing up then rinse the bowl in the washing up water before it gets drained out.

First world problems

CakeNinja · 13/05/2017 18:57

I have a kitchen with nothing on the sides besides a kettle (windowsill) and a Tassimo. Everything else lives in a cupboard or drawer.
The kitchen is big with plenty of storage!
I don't have a coffee jar as we use the machine. Only dp drinks tea or visitors, the canister for this lives in the cupboard and once it's empty, it gets banged upside down and refilled. I have a box with sugar cubes for anyone that needs it.

I can't see how this is such a problem, just wipe them with a damp cloth if needs be and get on with the rest of your life free from worry!!! Grin

This thread is amazing. We have one set that were a wedding present. Over a decade ago. I cannot recollect ever washing them. I do wipe down the outside occasionally if needed. And we have moved house 3 times.

floraeasy · 13/05/2017 20:47

Wow, thanks everyone Grin

I feel like a freak now for getting my canisters dirty!

@topcat2014 yeah we drink a lot of hot drinks, plus we work from home so that's a lot!

If you spill some sugar/coffee on the counter can you not just wipe it up, problem solved?

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/05/2017 21:37

I have scrolled through three pages just to find out how much sugar you use because I can't believe it's a trial to do it 'all day'. And no answer.

I may need to get a life...

Ilikecheeriosyum · 13/05/2017 21:52

Well I feel lazy now haha

Surely you said the outside gets dirty,

You can wash that while the sugar and tea is still in there?!

Ours get marks on the outside so I just wipe them down?? I don't take I all out to wash the whole thing because it's just the outside that needs cleaning??

GoodDayToYou · 13/05/2017 22:00

I wash mine when they're empty, in the dishwasher. (I never empty a new batch of tea bags or whatever into a dirty container.) They're all mismatching and stored in a cupboard above the kettle. I just shut the door on them. Easy!

floraeasy · 14/05/2017 13:19

Grin Sorry!

I work from home and drink a fair few coffees a day with milk and two sugars in each. I suppose I am thinking if I can go all day not using the canister, why have it at all?

I think I'm weird now. This thread and its replies bear that out!
