To have two sets of tea, coffee, sugar canisters?

Just wondering what you all do when one of the above canisters need cleaning? Do you wash and dry it and refill it straight away or what?

I only do washing up once a day (immersion heater only and no dishwasher). So, say, my sugar canister is dirty I will put it in with the washing up that night. But it means I am spooning the sugar out of the bag all day!

The set I have I love but cannot get another one anymore. It's old and came from Woolworths originally.

I don't want to mix and match a set in use iyswim.

Should I get rid of my current set and buy two new matching sets so I can instantly get a fresh one of out the cupboard to use?

Trivial, really, but I am chronically disorganised and am determined to fix these niggles.

I hardly ever wash them.

Then on a day like today I notice they are manky.

Now I have to tip the contents into three separate bowls.

Wash and dry them (by boiling kettle as no hot water handy).

Hope I can get them properly bone dry.

Washing the three bowls I've used.

I know I'm lazy, but...

I probably wipe down the outside of them more than I would wash the inside. Can't you just do that? With a damp cloth or something?

floraeasy · 13/05/2017 14:00

Wiping the outside would really help in the meantime. The outside is the worst bit of course.

Oh yes people do all kinds of crazy cleaning on here but you need to post in the housekeeping area for the full force of that! It's a different kind of crazy on aibu ;)

teaandakitkat · 13/05/2017 14:03

I don't wash my tea canister at all. Tea bags I assume you mean.
I tend to put more tea bags in it when it's looking low. On the rare occasion it gets completely empty I tip it upside down to knock out the loose tea then fill it back up.

Blazedandconfused · 13/05/2017 14:11

Wow. I can't believe you started a thread about this. I can't believe I read it. I'm stunned that I'm replying.

GrumpyOldBag · 13/05/2017 14:11

Don't bother with canisters for anything. Life's too short.

Have about 8 different types of tea, so they stay in the packets in the cupboard.

Sugar gets decanted into a little sugar bowl, which goes in the dishwasher occasionally.

Bean to cup coffee machine so no need for a canister, with a jar or Nescafe in the cupboard for emergencies.

Ha ha Blazedandconfused me too!

Oldraver · 13/05/2017 14:12

Way too much overthinking on this...

MilkRunningOutAgain · 13/05/2017 14:14

I just use the coffee jar and tea bag box they come in. I never bother with special pots. As for sugar we don't use it in drinks so whenever we get a guest wanting sugar in their drink I get flustered and end up spilling sugar from the big sugar bag everywhere. Mental note, buy a sugar bowl!

LadyGlitterSparklesSeriously · 13/05/2017 14:16

Ahh, I solved the problem of the dirty cannisters a couple of years ago. Don't buy metal ones. Get nice ceramic ones, wipe-clean, nobody sees greasy fingerprints.

I can't actually remember the last time I washed them. Probably never. I wipe them when I wipe the counter.

Christmastree43 · 13/05/2017 14:17

I wash them individually whenever one becomes empty, wash by hand and either dry straight away and fill back up or leave on the drainer until I next want a cup of tea/ spoonful of sugar/ clear the draining board. It's not complicated is it?! 🙈

redshoeblueshoe · 13/05/2017 14:17

Buy sugar cubes I can't believe I wrote that Blush

Notso · 13/05/2017 14:18

I don't keep anything like that out so it doesn't get dusty. I have a tea tin, I wash it out when it's empty, then dry and refill.
Instant coffee stays in the jar as its rarely used, coffee pods go in a holder under the machine and ground coffee is in its packet in the tin.
Nobody in the house has sugar in drinks. I have a sugar bowl and a massive jar of caster sugar with vanilla pods in I use for baking so I just put a bit in the bowl if guests need it.

LadyGlitterSparklesSeriously · 13/05/2017 14:19

And I have to agree, this is a stunningly mundane thread Grin

Are you procrastinating OP?

ScarlettFreestone · 13/05/2017 14:19

I suspect your issue is that the rest of the kitchen isn't clean enough (sorry).

They really shouldn't ever be sticky or dusty because your kitchen shouldn't ever be sticky or dusty.

Your kitchen should be wiped down every day.

Training everyone only to use dry spoons will solve the melty coffee issue.

Training your DH to wash his hands Confused will solve the finger marks issue and the hygiene issue

Fragglez · 13/05/2017 14:20

I have glass ones with cork stoppers so they do get cleaned sometimes. The cork is a bugger to dry if I've washed that too. I try to do it on a either a hot sunny day or when the heating is on. I dry with paper towel and then put it in the sun or on the radiator to dry - open top upwards to let the water evaporate.

I realise this makes me sound like a complete loon. My house is, in fact, a complete tip....

I suspect you're right!

Ahem...

You've got me bang to rights!!!!

Eh?

Just wipe them down with the contents inside.

I've never heard of people doing what you do Grin

GreenHillsSunnySkies · 13/05/2017 14:23

YABU to actually use them at all. Keep the sugar, coffee and tea in the packaging they come in (put the sugar bag inside a large ziplock bag for when it develops the inevitable rips) hidden away in the cupboard ffs like slatternly normal people do. The matching canisters, from which you may once in a blue moon occasionally wipe the dust with a damp cloth, are surely just for appearances sake like stunt tea towels and pineapples.

Don't remind me - I have a biscuit and cracker storage problem that I also need to get to grips with Wink

Sorry Flora, I'm trying to be helpful rather than rude!

Kitchen wipes are actually pretty good and make doing a quick wipe of the surfaces easy.

floraeasy · 13/05/2017 14:26

I didn't know canisters were so rare. I see them everywhere in shops. I thought they were rather ubiquitous? Granted my particular set are oldish, but...

I don't have wall cupboards in my kitchen which would put me off keeping them in their original containers. Would have to keep bending to the lower floor cabinets every time.

OP posts:
floraeasy · 13/05/2017 14:28

ScarlettFreestone

No problem! I realised Grin.

I realised that. I do know I'm a terrible slattern and much of this is of my own making.

I may be beyond help of course, but I am grateful for all advice just the same.
