Totally fed up. Next door have a trampoline which ( it seems) is in constant use ( or rather, whenever I am at home it is).

I have a nice , garden . Ex Local authority, so on an estate. I'd like to sit and relax in it, but all you can hear is the sound of squeaky springs, usually accompanied by kids screaming, or, teenagers who bounce so high you can see them over our fence. (Most of these kids do not live at the house, it seems the whole neighbourhood visits to use their garden [ hmm] )
I'm all for kids having fun, but in small gardens, is it fair to subject your neighbours to the accompanied noise/ inconvenience caused?

If you've got the sort of garden that is big enough to not overlook anyone else, all well and good, but I feel like I'm going to have nervous breakdown if I have to put up with this noise or the sight of shirtless teens above my fence any longer. It's like torture.

My neighbours are not the kind of people you can just " have a word with", either.( We lived here 8 years with no problems, before they were moved in 5 years ago)

I just wondered what the consensus of opinion is - am I actually unreasonable or have I turned into a miserable ' old' person? ( My own kids are 17, 20 and 24...but I would never have allowed them to annoy the neighbours like this).

YABU unfortuately. There is an obesity crisis in this country. Trampolining is good for bones health and especially good for pubescent girls. Children no longer go off on their own these days. It's a different era and they need things to occupy themselves. If you want to live in a community with adults, I think you'd have to look into it or wait until you are 55 to get a place in a retirement village.

BarbarianMum · 13/05/2017 12:07

Meh - theyre children playing. We live in a very suburban area w lots of small gardens. Any nice weather, all you can hear is lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and children playing. That's life.

hrtbigbutt · 13/05/2017 12:12

I can see both side of this having lived with it and lived through it!! My dc are older now but when they were in their teens we had a large trampoline and it was nice to know where they were and it was the only thing we owned that all dc would use!! It was noisy and they were shirtless teens at one point. Fast forward a few years and I moved onto a small new build estate with 5ft fences ....... and my neighbours got a lovely trampoline that took up the whole garden I saw how painfully annoying they could be, some might say this was my karma lol I ended up moving house.

My garden is like "garden in the middle" as the little boys one side jump on theirs and communicate with their friend the other side of me .
They do not bother me and I usually will pick up a ball that was aimed to each other but didn't make it . They are usually all in by teatime .

Nanny0gg · 13/05/2017 12:14

11pm is out of order whatever they're doing.

And I hate them. I think they're highly dangerous as well as intrusive.

expatinscotland · 13/05/2017 12:15

Nervous breakdown? Like torture? Please, get a grip. YABU.

jamdonut · 13/05/2017 12:16

Headphones would be nice, but I actually have two hearing aids ( I have otosclerosis), so that makes it difficult. I could take them out I suppose, but again...why should I have to? That is inconvenient for me and my family.

I know there is nothing I can do about ' the sounds of lives being lived' , but there are times when you have to have a little thought for others and think " that's enough now", aren't there? Minimise the impact on others?

Yanbu to be fed up - it would stress me out too. It's right up there with barking dogs and drunk adults at 'BBQs' (that's why I live in the middle of nowhere and have no close neighbours) .

Unfortunately, I think all you can do is wait it out and hope they get bored/grow out of it soon. Or move.

Actually, no, no one has the 'right' to silence in a residential/urban area. Get real!

haveacupoftea · 13/05/2017 12:21

YABU because if they aren't screaming on the trampoline they'll be screaming about something else. The months of June - August are a relentless assault on the ears.

Could you get some closed cup headphones that would sit over your ears and hearing aids?

Can see why you're a bit frustrated, you have every right to be if you want, but I don't think you can expect them to change.

MabelFurball...don't think I haven't thought about it! Grin

expatinscotland I did say I was being a drama queen, I admit it. But thank you for recommending a grip. Off to get one now.

For those making comments like this:

Nervous breakdown? Like torture? Please, get a grip. YABU.

Some people have greater sensitivity to noise than others. I have two children on the spectrum who find noise extremely difficult to deal and yes, it's like torture for them. And it would really grate on me. Just because you don't mind noise yourself doesn't mean someone else with a lower tolerance is BU.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/05/2017 12:25

I do sympathise. Next door used to have one, and several of the neighbours' kids seemed to be on it every day. One particular child - at least 5 or 6 - would scream the whole time - that very high-pitched baby/toddler sort of screaming. Nobody ever told her to stop it, she was too old to be screaming like a 2 year old.
It used to make me feel murderous.

Thank God that family is now gone, with their trampoline.
The sound of children playing is one thing, but there should be some consideration, especially when gardens are very small, like ours.

GooodMythicalMorning · 13/05/2017 12:25

Yanbu. I fucking hate our one. Can't wait for it to break so we can get rid. (Has started to lose the padding, when I feel its unsafe it'll go.) I dont like how noisy they are on it. Mil bought it for them 3 yrs ago.

TheWhiteRoseOfYork · 13/05/2017 12:26

Thud thud thud crash cheer! The sound of my neighbours three gardens away playing basketball. I feel your pain OP but we just have to suffer on bravely. No good will come of saying anything.

BillSykesDog · 13/05/2017 12:26

YANBU. My Gran had this. She felt like she was in a zoo.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 13/05/2017 12:27

Agree with Expat - in busy residential areas, we all have to accept that the people around us make noise in their own ways... babies cry, children play, teenagers play loud music, adults use tools, have parties etc and of course it's annoying sometimes, but it's part and parcel of life.

If you can't abide noise you're better off out of busy places.

expatinscotland · 13/05/2017 12:27

I chalk up loud music as just another noise, Navy, as long it's during the day. It's not every day of the year for 12 hours. It's not something I'd do, but meh, live and let live. People are always going to do something others find annoying.

Spikeyball · 13/05/2017 12:28

We have one in the garden for ds. It helps regulate his senses ( he has severe autism) and keeps him calm and so not screaming. It is also exercise for him because he cannot access other forms of exercise which are either too busy or unsafe. He can be noisey on it but he is not on it for hours on end. He also has to tolerate the noise of others which he finds distressing. It's about give and take.
