That this is a bit of a crappy Pass the Parcel prize?

So DH went out to do some chores, including getting a Pass the Parcel prize for DD's 6th birthday party tomorrow. I said it needed to be fairly small because otherwise you use rolls and rolls of wrapping paper to do al, the lawyers. He came back with this dolphin pencil sharpener (biro given for scale).

Settle a marital dispute: is this a bit crappy for a Pass the Parcel prize? Are we Mean Parents? Or will 5/6 year olds be very happy to win a dolphin pencil sharpener?

Ah yes I am like that too.. I get very upset st how my DH cooks.

When he makes fajitad he cuts up the veg first.. then the chicken. ThEn heats up oil in pan. Cooks chicken. Adds veg. Takes years

Hi logic is he can use the same board for veg then chicken! Ahhh.

I do chicken first as oil heats up then cool chicken as I wash up chicken board and cut up veg (diff board.. maybe) then chuck veg in and it's ready on the same working day tada!

He says I am a controlling fuss pot haha.

KurriKurri · 13/05/2017 11:59

I think the pencil sharpener, pen and rubber together make a nice prize.
No to the sherbet lemons though.
Send them to me and I will eat them eliminate them in a controlled explosion

Emboo19 · 13/05/2017 12:01

I think the three things together is fine. Definitely no to sherbet lemons though, I'd send him back out for different sweets, let him take the birthday boy/girl (sorry don't know if you said) to choose.

Wigeon · 13/05/2017 12:01

Right, I've made up a stationery set, put a ribbon on it and bob's your uncle. DH - not undermined. Children - probably happy. Me - happier than I was. Marriage - saved.

Do people really think sherbert lemons are a choking hazard? I personally don't like them that much so not particularly desperate to replace them with something else!

SnapJack - my DH cooks like that - takes absolutely ages, doesn't do things in the most efficient order, claims he can't understand recipes. The end result is usually very nice though, he is a good cook (just not an organised cook) so I just leave him to it.

I would say it's a fine prize. Dolphin pencil sharpener is cool.

I obviously now need to rethink my pass the parcel prizes.

I once had a boy who won the main prize and cried as it wasn't the tiny haribo bag of sweets. He didn't want the colouring book he wanted the sweets.

WindyWednesday · 13/05/2017 12:08

Sherbet lemons aren't a great layer prize imo. Yes I'd class them as a choke risk. That's why I do haribo packs. Can't do smarties as one in the group is gluten free.

SnapJack68 · 13/05/2017 12:10

Looks good as the little parcel.. well done.

Definite no to sherbert lemons. They also can cut tongues if have air bubbles around the sherbert

Ha yes my DH food tastes good too so when we have 1.5 hours spare before a stir fry dinner I am all up for him cooking!

MirandaWest · 13/05/2017 12:10

I think that is fine as an end of pass the parcel present. It's the fun of playing it rather than it being some big present at the end. Did use to put sweets of some sort inbetween the layers.

Remember doing it at DDs 7th (I think) birthday party and they all decided it had to be her that won and if it hadn't been I think they would have been disappointed. I found that slightly odd but went along with it Grin

OohAahBird · 13/05/2017 12:12

Definitely would replace the sweets, i dont ever have anything that could be a potential choking hazard when they may well start running around with it in their mouths, trying to get kids to not eat it straight away or sir still is nigh on impossible at that age.
Probably wouldn't happen, but I don't want to risk it

londonrach · 13/05/2017 12:13

Its fine. Perfect in fact

FrenchMartiniTime · 13/05/2017 12:16

Pass the Parcel prizes are supposed to be a little bit crappy, it's tradition Grin

I actually love your DH pick and I might pick one up for myself!

emilybrontescorset · 13/05/2017 12:17

Sherbert lemon s and strawberry sherberts Yum yum.
( Misses point today of thread).

user1490734428 · 13/05/2017 12:18

Why not also buy a pencilcase, pencils and gel pens?

TheWhiteRoseOfYork · 13/05/2017 12:21

I think it is fine too. I would not have thought anything of it at all if my DC had won it at a party. I would not have thought you mean as you were providing a party and entertaining my child for a couple of hours. It is a kids party prize not the National Lottery!

Oblomov17 · 13/05/2017 12:23

It's a bit mean as a main prize. A bag of Haribo aswell.
For each wrapper, one small sweet.

Zaphodsotherhead · 13/05/2017 12:24

Sherbet lemons!? Has he ever met a child?

Never knew one that liked sherbet lemons (too sour, cut mouths etc), especially when they'd be expecting Haribo or Milky Ways. What about getting a box of miniature Heroes and putting one of those between each layer?

I mean one individual chocolate, obvs, not an entire box.

user1493022461 · 13/05/2017 12:25

Why not also buy a pencilcase, pencils and gel pens?

Sure, and a 50 inch tv and a cuddly toy?

Wigeon · 13/05/2017 12:36

Right! It's done. The little "stationery set" in the middle, forfeits and a mini Milky Way between each lawyer (don't have Celebrations / Heros and can't be bothered to get any), think it will All Will Be Well.

I hate Pass the Parcel so don't usually do it, but DD has specifically requested it, hence this awful fuss.

Yeah I'm afraid that's quite a rubbish main prize! What's the point of hosting a party and then looking mean?

You also can't hand out boiled sweets to small kids in the layers - they're a big choking hazard.

user1493022461 · 13/05/2017 12:38

They are 6! Not toddlers, sweets are not a choking hazard.
Bloody hell.

JayneAusten · 13/05/2017 12:39

Cross posted, ignore everything I just said lol.

JayneAusten · 13/05/2017 12:49

You do realise people can choke at any age? Children of 6 still have relatively small throats. Boiled sweets are one of the most dangerous foods for choking. Children at parties run around whilst eating. Around 4 people a week die from food inhalation. You don't want any of them to be children at a party you are hosting.

user1493022461 · 13/05/2017 12:58

Of course people can choke at any age, which is half the point. YOU could as easily choke on a boiled sweet as a child could, do you want to ban boiled sweets for 40 year olds?
