My neighbourgh has 2 staffies and she told me when I moved in here to keep my 2 cats indoors which I do anyway because her dogs will attack them. Tonight I've just had her 2 dogs leg it in to my house and chase the cats upstairs the cats are fine but are now hiding on top of the wardrobe too frightened to come down. They need to keep control of their dogs they scream and shout at people when their dogs are in the shared garden there are a lot of young kids round here who are frightned of their dogs but they seem to think that its ok to shout at them because their dogs have lived here for 5 years so we should all just put up and shut up. I am fed up of going out in to my garden only to be nearly sent flying by one of her dogs and bitten every time they see me. Has anyone got any advice on what I can do other than just grin and bear it. Really want to put a fence up round the bit of garden that come with my house but I need to speak to easte agents first about that.

Years ago the rottie was the devil dog.
Then it was something else.

Rottweilers make people nervous in precisely the same way that bull terrier breeds make people nervous. It's not a case of the public being manipulated by the press. Rather, it's a straightforward case of big, powerful, aggressive breeds rightly perceived as a threat to public safety.

HappyFlappy · 14/05/2017 15:36

every time you hear of a dog mauling death in the news.... it's a staffy?

No it's not - it is, as Cesare and GuBrath say, a combination of ignorant reporting and uncaring owners.

And as Kali says - not long ago it was the rottweiler that was evil incarnate; prior to that the german shepherd and the dobermans had their turn; now huskies and malamutes seem to be getting in on the act, as are american bulldogs and "pitbulls". The only dogs that have ever frightened me have been akitas - massively powerful and very difficult to read.

I have seen adverts for some Eastern European breeds that I don't really think should be kept because they are NOT pets e.g. Caucasian Ovcharkas. These dogs were bred to pretty much live as feral animals protecting a herd from wolves and bears. They powerful, highly intelligent, independent and do not bond well with people - you really need to know what you are doing to have one of these dogs safely, but you can bet your bottom dollar that some idiot will get one to look the Big I Am and will abuse/ neglect it and there will be a tragedy.

Staffs are the dog of choice by thugs because
a) they are fiercely loyal to their owner - good protection against rival gangs and police
b) they will take a lot of abuse without turning on the owner - the tossers can treat them badly, underfeed and beat them and they won't turn
c) they look fearsome - as makes whoever is with them look tough
d) can be used for dog fighting - many breeds can, but these are pretty small and cheap to keep
e) usually have large litters - money in the bank to some people

They are a good breed ruined, most of the time.

HappyFlappy · 14/05/2017 15:37

Oh Lakie - that poor little dog. It makes your heart ache.

kali110 · 14/05/2017 15:42

I think it was the same case for rotties and staffs.
Too many twats getting a powerful dog.
Rotties like staffs can cause damage.
They are though lovely loyal dogs.
I think we should bring back dog licenses.

I have a Rott, the most beautiful loving gorgeous soppy sod in the world.

But in the hands of a wrong owner he would be 60 kilos of terror.

I do agree with Gloria to an extent. Big is seen as intimidating, but that doesn't go hand in hand with agresssive.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 14/05/2017 17:13

And the Rottweiler isn't an aggressive breed. My little Boo is however, she's a terrier. They're an aggressive breed but small so people don't worry so much.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 15/05/2017 02:08

Awwlookatmybabyspider I will be reporting them because these owners are not being fair to the dogs or the people who have to live here. I am extremly thankful that my cats didn't get ripped apart.

Kali110 to answer your question I live in a massionet that is attached to back of the building that I live in she lives in a flat in the house next door they have turned 2 seperate houses in to flats and I have no idea why she's allowed to keep 2 big dogs in what I can only assume is a one bedroom flat thats not enough space for 2 dogs.

SaorAlbaGuBrath I wish I had phoned the police when the dogs got in to my flat could've got them in to trouble over the dogs and the weed smoking.

Happyflappy a dog smiling is the cutest thing I've ever seen lol Smile

Trifleorbust at least one of the dogs has been reported to the out of hours dog warden.

putdownyourphone One dog has been reported right now I am thankful that my cats are indoor cats because if they where outdoor cats they would be dead by now with her dogs running round.

milliemolliemou unfortunatley tonight I had no option but to report one of the dogs otherwise I would've written everything down before doing a report.

Just to give everyone a quick update tonight I had no option but to report one of the dogs to the out of hours dog warden they where running loose in the garden and ran off in the direction of the main road when they heard another dog barking so I had no chance to catch the dog and quite frankly I don't want to be looking after dog over night for that pair of useless owners. So its their problem if they have to pay to get the dog back which I seriously hope they don't.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 15/05/2017 02:53

I am glad you have reported them. My friend's cat was killed by her neighbor's dogs. They ran clear through the screen door into her house and killed the cat inside. Please get these dogs removed before your cats suffer the same fate. The dogs know where the cats are now and may try to get in again.

There are quite a few dogs that get lose where we live as people rely on the electric sonic fences. I can't let my cat go outside on her own as she is too elderly to run or fight if one of them came after her.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 15/05/2017 02:59

TheMysteriousJackelope Fingers crossed my report means that there will be one less dog around here and then I only have the problem of the other dog to deal with. They had seen my cats sittinng in the windows and had already tried to get them from outside think thats why I ran straight in to mine because they already knew there's cats in here.

HappyFlappy · 15/05/2017 15:17

so I had no chance to catch the dog and quite frankly I don't want to be looking after dog over night

You did the right thing. Catching the dog isn't your responsibility, and your cats would have been terrified (and it would have driven you crazy!)/

I feel heavily sorry for both of these dogs, but the blame lies with the owners, not with anyone else.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 15/05/2017 17:29

Thank you HappFlappy exactly it would've only driven my cats potty and me and its not up to me to keep an on their dog. Unfortunatley my report didn't work they've got the dog back what the hell do I have to do to get rid of these dogs and their owners. I feel sorry for the dogs they are being looked after in a tiny flat with crap owners. I can only hope that one day they will get removed and given to someone who knows what they are doing.

YouTheCat · 15/05/2017 18:05

Have you called 101?

It's an offence for dogs to be out of control, even on private property, if they are causing a perceived threat.

HappyFlappy · 15/05/2017 22:05

I feel for you. All I can suggest is that you keep reporting (especially for the dogs "mouthing" you - you rightly fear that your niece may be hurt - she could be knocked flying by them even if they are just being playful.). Is there anyone else who is affected by this couple and their dogs who would also consider reporting them? It would lend strength to your complaint.
