What exactly is the Conservative government doing or going to do, for the 'working classes'? What are their tangible, core policies, to benefit the average Joe & Jane?

Just that

I'm an average 'Jane' (married to Joe) and long term I have more confidence they will do more for people like us in overall terms of prosperity rather than others who offer big promises but their big picture hasn't been thought through. The Conservatives need to continue for another term to continue their dialogue over Brexit. I suspect the EU may only give us what we they want to give, which means we need different trading partners. Global businesses generally prefer to trade with the Conservatives. Not saying that's fair, but that's how it is. It benefits all of us as a nation, not just the rich (we need the rich - they spend more, pay more VAT, national insurance, income tax, they employ people etc etc). The second reason is more home based. Sad to say we have austerity measures, due to massive borrowing by the previous Labour government, with the added slap in the face, that we have poor back up as they sold our gold reserves at rock bottom prices. We knew we would have austerity for a long time (DH & I were made redundant and it's been tough at times, so I am speaking from experience). We need continuity to let existing policies take effect. No-one said it would be a quick fix. Btw, I won't be voting LibDem - having witnessed the recreational/non medical use of cannabis and the health problems it causes, the NHS has enough patients without needlessly adding to the waiting lists!

Alconleigh · 13/05/2017 10:27

They won't do anything. Austerity is a choice. It's ideological. It's nothing to do with whether there is enough money or not. But people simply won't believe it. And there is a massive disconnect. My father is disabled, a heavy user of the NHS and votes Tory. But moans about the standard of care / waiting times etc. He simply can't see that there's a connection between these things. The 70s plus people who are the heaviest users of the NHS and the care system consistently voting for it to be slashed is something I find incomprehensible. Especially as so many of them are adamant that their houses shouldn't be sold to paid for care either; I can't work out where they think the money is going to come from if not from either the government via taxation or their own pocket?

makeourfuture · 13/05/2017 10:38

Conservative ideology is based on a mix of Social Darwinism and Protestant ideas of the virtuous succeeding and sinners failing.

Thoughts of a "working class" are not part of that philosophy.

scatterolight · 13/05/2017 10:41

One of the core issues for the working classes, topping polls over and over again, is immigration.

The Tories acknowledge immigration - particularly in regard to the sheer weight of numbers - as an issue. Labour wherever possible try to dismiss, downplay or divert concern about it. Limitless immigration? No problem! We just have to make sure evil employers don't cut wages!

So what do the Tories offer the average Joe and Jane? An honest, reality based approach to their most pressing concern.

BarbarianMum · 13/05/2017 10:55

Theyre going to exploit them. Obviously.

Even if (and I don't think it is) immigration is a "problem"....levels will not fall under the Tories.

HeyHoThereYouGo657 · 13/05/2017 11:02

So suck it ?? Rorty whatever ?

How RUDE . I can deduce YOU are a Tory .

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/05/2017 11:04

I can deduce YOU are a Tory

Yep because ALL Tories are rude. Jeez...

Bejazzled · 13/05/2017 11:08

Woohoo another Tory bashing thread. We must be in double figures by now. It's amazing how these threads are gathering quite desperate momentum and basically are just repeating the same things over and over.

Makes you wonder who is really so ill informed as to allow a stranger on a social media site to guide their voting intentions.

Tanith · 13/05/2017 11:15

"I can deduce YOU are a Tory

Bit of a jump to assume that, don't you think? Hmm
Certainly not what the poster said.

emilybrontescorset · 13/05/2017 11:30

What they will do is make life much harder.
If you don't like it then tough luck.
Go and inherit half a million and you will be just fine. Or go and get one of those jobs that are widely available which pay £100,000 per annum plus let you have endless expenses.
If you don't do the above then it is entirely your fault that you are poor, you are probably thick too as you had to go to the local comp rather than have decent, hard working parents who paid for your education.
A!l in all I have lived through many governments and I can say as a hard working person that my life is ALWAYS worse under a conservative government.

MiniMum97 · 13/05/2017 14:01

Can we please cut the "oh another Tory bashing thread" on every thread where people's political views are being discussed. It's just a way of trying to close down debate.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 13/05/2017 14:07

So on a thread asking 'what will the tories do' there are a fair few posts slagging off labour

The same posters are not saying what the positives are of the torys...oh no...just jumping straight in with labour jibes

And i agree with mini can we stop slagging everyone off please

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 13/05/2017 14:09

OP : What are the positives of the torys

Poster : i dont know but labour are worse

Honestly its fucking childish

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/05/2017 15:12

Plenty of shutting down of debate on both sides. Let's not pretend there isn't.

JanetBrown2015 · 13/05/2017 16:02

It is interestingf how very very many Tory bashing threads there are. Let us see who gets in in June but do all vote. I want a big turn out.

The Tory policies are better for people of all income levels and the people are likely to show their agreement with me on that when the conservatives win the election.

RortyCrankle · 13/05/2017 16:37

Hey whatever How RUDE . I can deduce YOU are a Tory

Yes, of course I am.

I would like to know when people, assuming they are adults, start being self sufficient and standing on their own two feet instead of sponging off of other people's hard earned taxes?

I look forward to the Tories being in power until 2022 and hopefully beyond. Enjoy Grin

Capricorn76 · 13/05/2017 16:57

Cons tough on immigration? And the rest. May's had the authority to control non-EU immigration since at least 2010.

LovelyBath77 · 13/05/2017 17:12

But they are scrapping tax credits, and replacing with universal credit! (the joy)

JanetBrown2015 · 13/05/2017 17:14

Rorty, well said. Ten more years hopefully.

BadKnee · 13/05/2017 17:59

Actually I think it is a good question and one worth discussing because the people in the middle - Joe and Jane as you called them - will vote, do work, do pay tax so will play a significant role in politics over the next few years.

I haven't really looked at the manifesto /pledges/plans yet = and this election is being driven by Brexit and to some extent the Scottish Ref question so some of the policies will get a back seat.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/05/2017 18:04

I haven't really looked at the manifesto /pledges/plans yet

No one has. They haven't been released yet Wink

jelliebelly · 13/05/2017 18:15

Well we don't know yet do we - they haven't leaked their own manifesto.

MaggieLightBlue · 13/05/2017 18:20

What about affordable housing?

I live in a Tory constituency. I live under a Tory government. My family are being adversely affected by their cuts - not welfare benefits - to the NHS, education, mental health, police services and other public services.

OP posts:
MaggieLightBlue · 13/05/2017 18:21

They are scrambling a manifesto up as we speak, hoping it will beat Labour's.
