To NOT go to a&e with 10 year old

First off there is no minor injuries unit where I live. Just an a&e department.

Ds was playing football last night and got whacked with the ball to his hand when he was in goal. Bent his hand back and hurt but as he could move it we thought nothing of it and it would be fine.

Now he's complaining of a lot of pain when he put pressure on it. I think he may have just sprained it and will be fine with painkillers and rest. He says he's broken it (he loves a drama) and want to get it xrayed, plus miss the mor big of school.

I am I being unreasonable??? I really don't believe it's broken,

But you don't know it's broken until it's x rayed. So take him to a&e...why wouldn't you?

FallenSky · 11/05/2017 07:55

Being able to move the hand is not a sign of nothing being broken. Is it swollen of anything? Do painkillers help?

Only you know your DS and whether he's putting it on or not.

SilenceOfThePrams · 11/05/2017 07:56

Being able to move it doesn't mean it isn't broken, sadly. Doesn't mean it is either, but only an X-ray will show you for sure.

2410ang · 11/05/2017 07:56

I'm sorry but my son has done the exact same thing and it was broken. Go to A&E!

HeyCat · 11/05/2017 07:56

It's very common for small bones in the hand to break after an impact, id take him to get checked. If it is broken then carrying on using the hand could make the damage worse.

Middleoftheroad · 11/05/2017 07:57

I would take mine personally..their friend did break his hand recently even though he thought he"d only strained it.

RedBugMug · 11/05/2017 07:57

go after school.
there are so many bones in the wrist, being able to move it is not an indication that it isn't broken. only an x-ray can make that visible.

UrsulaPandress · 11/05/2017 07:57

Can you get a doctor's appointment? They would probably send you for an X-ray but with a ticket to go straight to X-ray thereby avoiding a&e. At least that's what happens where I live.

If you think he's being a drama llama, pop a support bandage on it and send him to school.

LunaLoveLess · 11/05/2017 07:58

Ohh ok

It's not swollen anywhere.

Right a&e it is.

I'm far from the parent who rushes to the Dr but I would get it x-rayed. My daughter tripped over a football in the playground and she had a green stick fracture which I missed because her cardigan covered her wrist. She was in a lot of pain too.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2017 08:00

Yeah, I think I would do A&E in those circumstance. Hope you aren't there long!

2014newme · 11/05/2017 08:02

Failure to seek medical attention for a child when they require it is regarded as a sign of neglect. Take him to the hospital ffs. Don't be a shit parent.

Rossigigi · 11/05/2017 08:02

My ds1 fractured his arm twice
And both times could move it ok. He needs it checked out.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/05/2017 08:13

How come when someone says should they go to A&E they usually get told they shouldn't (unless they are already dead) and when someone asks if they are unreasonable for not going they get told they should. .

LunaLoveLess · 11/05/2017 08:13

There's no swelling and he says it only hurts at the wrist bit, but yeah we're going. Just need to sort the other kids out

expatinscotland · 11/05/2017 08:13

I can't believe you'd let him sit in pain like that. Yeah, you need to go to A&E and get him checked out. Hmm

expatinscotland · 11/05/2017 08:15

I'm not a big sweller. Have broken bones before with little to no swelling. The day after I completely tore my ACL, I had deceptively little swelling.

I think it's going a bit far to accuse the op of neglect! It's perfectly normal to be unsure whether a child needs looking at or not. Watch and wait for minor unobvious injuries is quite sensible, I think. Sometimes kids do just make a bigger fuss about stuff than they need to.

I do agree that he should be seen at some point soon though, op and I'm glad you're getting him looked at. Just in case. Perhaps do as pp suggested and get the gp to give an xray referral form? At least then you'll hopefully have less of a wait.

user1489675144 · 11/05/2017 08:22

Are you a doctor? You don't believe it is broken but you don't know for definite. Is it that you cannot be bothered to take him? It may be bruised/sprained but why would you not check if he is in pain. What if it is broken and you decided to ignore him.

2014newme · 11/05/2017 08:22

Not saying it's neglect. Saying that failure to seek medical treatment in a timely manner is seen as neglect. Ask any Dr or social worker it's nor my opinion it's fact. The op does not fall into that category yet.

Simply because every situation is different and judged on its own.

GreatFuckability · 11/05/2017 08:29

I would take him after school unless hes in agony. moving it and no swelling aren't definite indicators of no break, but they ARE indicators.

LindaBoughtApeaShooter · 11/05/2017 08:30

I walked with a broken leg (not well admittedly!) you are definitely best to get it checked. Oh and nurse who examined me (the day after I did it - I thought it wasn't broken but went the next day because it hurt like hell) said she didn't think it was broken because of the lack of swelling. She was much more sympathetic after the X-ray Wink. So the moral of the story is lack of movement or lack of swelling don't necessarily mean it's not broken.

Good luck at A and E - hope the wait isn't too bad.
