To NOT go to a&e with 10 year old

First off there is no minor injuries unit where I live. Just an a&e department.

Ds was playing football last night and got whacked with the ball to his hand when he was in goal. Bent his hand back and hurt but as he could move it we thought nothing of it and it would be fine.

Now he's complaining of a lot of pain when he put pressure on it. I think he may have just sprained it and will be fine with painkillers and rest. He says he's broken it (he loves a drama) and want to get it xrayed, plus miss the mor big of school.

I am I being unreasonable??? I really don't believe it's broken,

I fell off a horse when I was about 9/10, landed on my wrist and it was so sore. I couldn't get back on the horse because my wrist couldn't take the weight to swing up into the saddle. My parents assured me it was fine, all looked normal...and it wasn't until the next day that mum caved and took me to get it looked at. I had a cast on it for 2 months.
(I still like to tease mum about this cause she just told my teacher "if she cries, send her to the toilet" - cause mum was a teacher in the same school...my teacher was one of her good friends...)

My brother broke his wrist in exactly the same way.

Scribblegirl · 11/05/2017 12:21

My mum didn't take me to A&E for two days once because she thought it was a sprain when I fell over in rounders aged 9. Turns out it was broken. She felt like the worst mother in the world I may still bring it up to tease her

Hope your getting on ok at a&e Luna, hopefully it's not too much of a wait because it's not a weekend or evening!

Bigblug · 11/05/2017 13:06

When I was 8 i had an accident in p.e at school. I fell from a height onto extended arms, knocked myself out and was in a lot of pain. School didn't send me home. Parents didn't think much of It because school didn't, and it wasn't until 3 days later when I was still complaining and could physically hold a fork or open a door that they finally took me to get an x-ray. Both wrists broken and put into casts.

Better safe than sorry.

Bigblug · 11/05/2017 13:09

Sorry just read the full thread and seen you've taken him to a&e, hope everything is okay Flowers

To all those people who are questioning why we have given examples of breaks we have experienced and had doubts ourselves about going to A&E, when the OP has already said she is going to take her son to the hospital, we have done so in the hope that anyone else reading this thread will learn that small breaks like this often don't show any outward signs and will go & get it checked out so that it is dealt with promptly rather than healing badly and causing pain later on in life as a pp has said. Children's bones are rather bendy!
Hopefully the OP will come back & let us know how they got on today. Flowers

Hi everyone!!

ITS JUST A SPRAIN!!!

Ds was back at school by lunch time with his wrist in a splint and sling.

Thank you for all telling me I was unreasonable, I'm so glad I was and for being convinced to take him.

Hurrah.

bettytaghetti · 11/05/2017 13:42

Good news Luna!

Lollyb86 · 11/05/2017 16:56

Glad it's just a sprain

frami · 11/05/2017 17:07

Glad it's a sprain.

Miniwookie · 11/05/2017 21:36

I don't think you were being unreasonable OP. My ds had the exact same thing happen. We never took him to a&e and it was better in a couple of days. Obviously I'd it had gone on longer we would have taken him, but I don't think we, or you, were being neglectful.

Ginkypig · 11/05/2017 22:27

That's great Luna and I'm glad it was a relatively quick visit
