Theresa May interview on the One Show

Okay, maybe I am being a tiny bit unreasonable, but if else also saw this (or caught up on iPlayer), I cringed quite a bit when TM said that 'there's 'boy jobs' and 'girl jobs'. She said this just after her husband made a joke about taking the bins out, when they were asked about what decisions they make as a couple.

First of all, I understand that it's meant to be a bit of a tongue-in-cheek comment and not totally serious, especially as she's PM and as her husband, by all appearances, appears to be a really valuable source of support for her. I have to say I do like TM and her husband as a couple, from what we see of them, and I like the way that they do seem to come across as a very supportive and united partnership.

But it was just the comment that I didn't like - I found it a bit twee and unnecessary. What does everyone else think?

I thought they came across as a very normal, pleasant couple.

The boy/girl jobs comment is typical of someone of their (and my) generation. It was obviously meant as a lighthearted comment, nothing more.

I think the country is in very safe hands with Mrs. May.

Orlantina · 10/05/2017 11:16

We vote for a Government. Why should her partner be on the show?

Policies, not family relationships.

ProudConservative · 10/05/2017 11:17

Valentine2

It was triggering Hmm

Half the Relationships threads are about this issue

Do you think she actually reads MN? Really?

Orlantina · 10/05/2017 11:17

I think the country is in very safe hands with Mrs. May

Unless you want your children to have a decent education in well funded schools with teachers who are qualified to do the job.

Nicemil1 · 10/05/2017 11:18

well to be fair Blaire, Brown, major snd thatcher all brought their families into the limelight it's hardly just the May's

Nicemil1 · 10/05/2017 11:21

valentine

You take the prize for the most dramatic angle to a joke on mumsnet

hiveofactivity · 10/05/2017 11:32

At least Corbyn isn't dragging his partner in. Whatever drivel he comes out with at least he has the balls to say it himself instead of having a (investment banker) mouthpiece to hide behind.

I actually liked TM more before the One Show. Not sure who they were targetting - amoeba?

BollardDodger · 10/05/2017 11:35

Its impossible for everyone to analyse every little thing they're going to say before they say it in case someone takes it the wrong way.

SusannahL · 10/05/2017 11:41

Well education has been in decline in this country for decades, so the Tories can't be solely blamed for that.
At least they are trying to do something to raise standards by bringing back grammar schools.
I have no idea why Labour hate them so much when they enable bright children from poor families to have a good education.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 10/05/2017 11:48

Was it this Phillip May thats under investigation?

Bejazzled · 10/05/2017 11:51

I think referring to the great British public as "amoeba" says more about the writer than the target.

CheeseQueen · 10/05/2017 11:53

I think that for quite a few people, this was a trigger and certainly not a joke.

I didn't watch the interview, but how the hell is a couple bantering about "girl and boy jobs" triggering?
Good grief. Best step away from the entire MN forum if you're that easily set off.

scaryteacher · 10/05/2017 11:55

I'd rather do the cooking than change the wheels and tyres on the car from the winter to the summer set. Dh took the rubbish out this morning as well....at 2 degrees it was too cold for me to venture forth.

As a pp said, jobs for the girls for the Tories are PM, Home Secretary, Justice Minister etc. When will Labour or the LibDems have women leading them....wait, perhaps Diane Abbot after Jeremy Corbyn?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 10/05/2017 12:11

Nobody mention 2 time labour leader Harriet Harmon Hmm

The80sweregreat · 10/05/2017 12:22

Jeremy Corbyn is going on there soon - i assume on his own which made me feel a bit sorry for him really! ( i am a soft touch) I dont know much about him personally but i know that he was married and has children.
I am sure that TM has good points and they seem happy. He came across well. Just her policies and the people around her that make me feel queasy and unhappy!

squishysquirmy · 10/05/2017 12:25

Is this what she means by "meeting the people?" Cringy, craven little puff pieces where she knows what the questions will be rather than debates or difficult interviews.

"Who makes the tea?"
"Who takes the bins out?"
"Are they strong and stable bin bags, or do they burst and spill the contents all over the floor?"
"Aren't you a lovely couple?"

All the pressing questions the voters want to ask...
Cute.

squoosh · 10/05/2017 12:26

I have no idea why Labour hate them so much when they enable bright children from poor families to have a good education.

Ah. You've fallen for it then.

How many children from poor families exactly do you think grammar schools benefit?

BelleTheSheepdog · 10/05/2017 12:28

I just caught a clip on Daily Politics: first thing I noticed was that Mr Teresa sounded a bit Scouse.

scaryteacher · 10/05/2017 12:37

Just That because she was a temporary caretaker, as acting leader for very short periods, not permanent like Mrs T and the current PM.

ProudConservative · 10/05/2017 12:44

2-time acting leader. She was keeping the seat warm for a man to take the reigns back.

The80sweregreat · 10/05/2017 12:49

Do not for a moment believe that TM has done well because she was from a normal working class family who did well because she went to a grammar school - her dad was a vicar and they are just as ruthless as any other parent - in fact more so as they tend to have more connections and seen as the people to be with ( especially when it comes to education and what not) i have no doubt that a lot of strings have been pulled over the years for her. I have seen it in action with some of my own friends with religious schools and the clergy. I bet that her parents were not 'poor' either. Its something thats all peddled ( same with Mrs Thatcher as a 'grocers daughter' , a very rich grocers daughter) i have heard it all before and the Tories will use any tactics to garner votes from us normal folk.. it tends to work for some odd reason too!

dotandstripe · 10/05/2017 13:00

I thought it was sweet and they came across as a nice middle class, middle aged couple. A bit awkward at times but that's perfectly understandable.

Corbyn is on wife number 3 so I'm not surprised he wants to keep it well out of the media...

HelloPossums · 10/05/2017 13:21

Pavlovian thanks for the link Grin I love John Crace's references in his articles to 'Kim Jong-May' and the 'Maybot'.

hive I couldn't agree more - the whole thing was cringey drivel, and I'm still not entirely sure why we do need to hear from TM's husband. As you say, is he the one out of the two of them who's running the country? Hmm (Answer: nope, of course not - he's too busy deciding when's the perfect time to take out the bins Wink)

Very interesting link JustAnother!

Also I quite like the slogan at the end of the link: 'let's make June the end of May' Wink
