To have had enough!

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 19:59

Of my IBS!
I only dared to treat myself to a bloody bacon and egg sandwich and some roast chicken on Sunday and now my guts feel like a washing machine. I'm bloated, gassy, in pain and feel bleugh, all because I just wanted to eat nice things! It sucks and I've had enough!
Any tips to help me out (as I feel like this a lot of the time, just worse when I have been naughty!)
I don't smoke anymore, given up spicy food, don't drink alcohol or caffeine, all because of my guts (well the giving up smoking was a good thing!) but I miss curries, I miss coffee, I miss having a nice glass of wine but can't even contemplate these things Sad
So I'm just looking for ideas to make my life and eating a bit more enjoyable!!

I hear you, I'm a bit like that.

Having home made kefir every day is helping a lot though, I have to say. Can't remember the last time I was gassy and in pain since I started.

Still don't eat anything heavy, alcohol or caffeine, though.

But I can manage bacon and egg sandwiches and roast chicken.

TTOF · 09/05/2017 20:05

It's bread that's my down fall. I can't eat grainy stuff which I love. :( And white bread must be handled with caution - some are like glue in my guts.

IBS is horrid. :(

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 20:06

Oooh, Kefir, what's that??

I'm a sufferer too Sad mine can be anything and different each day. Today is was my latte, yesterday was my sandwich, previous day something totally different.
I can eat veggies at home and be fine but eat them at my mums and it really upsets me.
Peppermint tea helps and mine did get better when I came of the pill but recently has gotten worse due to having the depo injection.

Sorry op I have no words of advice but just wanted to say you are not alone

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 20:22

I'm like that CBeebies!! Never quite know what it was! I assume it was the eggs, bacon and chicken, but could just have easily been the muesli I ate this morning! So bloody annoying!
I'm also an illness phobic so always scared that it's not just my IBS, but some awful stomach bug that I'm going to pass on to everyone!

Sympathies SadFlowers

I suffer as well - anything rich/creamy/too oily are the main culprits!

It's rubbish!

42isthemeaning · 09/05/2017 20:25

I hear you Ames. It's very frustrating. I'm currently having issues and have done on and off for over 20 years. Have you considered the FODMAPs diet? It's recommended that you have a dietitian to support you through it as it involves eliminating a lot of stuff, then reintroducing it until you find out what the real baddies are for your particular tum. I hope you feel better soon. Flowers

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 20:39

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking I should go back to the GP and ask about a dietitian as it's just getting ridiculous!!

I sympathise :-(

Spare knickers and Imodium in the handbag at all times!

Have you tried activated charcoal tablets? They really helped me. They're about £7 from Holland & Barrett.

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 20:56

Charcoal?? Ooh, might try that!! Thanks. Xx

Chesntoots · 09/05/2017 21:02

I feel your pain...

Fruit, veg, salad stuff, red meat, cereals, alcohol and cakes (!!) all set me off. I'm poorly every day. FODMAP diet no use whatsoever.

One of the worst things is that people think it's either a fad or just an upset tummy. They don't understand that it rules your life. If I am going out on Friday evening I have to be thinking about what I can be eating from Tuesday onwards! I'm tired, low iron, now got heart problems, can no longer do cardio exercise - only yoga stuff (and only if I haven't eaten anything at all that day...). A couple of years ago I would have quite happily taken myself off to stand in the middle of the M1.

Sorry - hijacked quite a bit there. Good news is I can eat smokey bacon crisps until they come out of my ears!

Stripyhoglets · 09/05/2017 21:18

I've found low fodmap helped but every now and again I get a really bad attack and am terrified of it happening in public as I pass out.

Topseyt · 09/05/2017 21:22

One of the main causes of my IBS turned out to be an overactive thyroid. Treating that helped a lot, so I would suggest getting yours tested if you haven't already.

I do still get IBS, but it isn't as severe and is helped with daily Loperamide (often sold as Imodium).

You have my sympathy. I spent years with my bowels controlling my life and know what it feels like.

Demant0 · 09/05/2017 21:30

Am reading this with interest. Sorry no advice but would like to know if you think my bad reaction to eating restaurant food in the evenings could be IBS? I had a curry the other night (no alcohol as upsets me too much the next day) and I felt like I had a hangover for THREE days afterwards. This is quite common, well whenever I eat out or takeaways.

Don't smoke, don't drink, feel bloated unless food is healthy. It's really bloody boring.

I thought it could be a sodium intolerance, but perhaps not?

DragonNoodleCake · 09/05/2017 21:38

Me too!

Mine are onions and leeks! They kill me

So I cook pretty much everything from scratch without onions

Anasnake · 09/05/2017 21:43

I've gone vegan - only been doing it a few weeks and feel much better. My triggers are dairy, white bread/pasta and alcohol. I relapsed and had a hotdog the other night though and really paid for it afterwards.

Anasnake · 09/05/2017 21:44

I take daily buscopan too and swapped caffeine for peppermint tea - which is bloody hard but does help

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 22:18

I take buscopan when I have a flare up, which is pretty much everyday!
I've cut out red meat, onions, garlic (kills me!!), loads of stuff and yet still suffer all the time!
I am lucky because I can WFH as when I'm going through a particularly bad attack I can't go into work. But I definitely get the 'looks' from colleagues.
I've never thought about sodium before, as I do love my salt!
I've had my thyroid tested, which was ok.
I've had one colonoscopy and they want me to go for another as suspect possible diverticulitis, but I'm just too scared to do the preparation again!

OP posts:
Ames33 · 09/05/2017 22:19

Sorry WFH is work from home, but you all probably knew that!

OP posts:
Ames33 · 09/05/2017 22:22

@Demant0
I would go and see your GP and tell them about what happens. Keep a diary of when it happens and what you think set it off.

OP posts:
Ames33 · 09/05/2017 22:24

@Chesntoots
I wish I could eat smokey bacon crisps!!
Sounds like you have been through a shit time with your IBS (excuse the pun!)

Nocabbageinmyeye · 09/05/2017 22:24

Can I ask how long it too you all to get an IBS diagnosis? I am having problems at the moment and feel it may be this, over and back between gp and a specialist but no diagnosis yet

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 22:27

I was diagnosed a long time ago now, so can't really remember but defiantly over a couple of years. Xx

OP posts:
Instasista · 09/05/2017 22:27

Ibs isnt really a diagnosis it just means unidentifiable bowel problems.

I second charcoal and fodmap which I found to be excellent but really is very restrictive, so maybe as a last resort

SillyYak · 09/05/2017 22:27

Did you know a significant number of people with coeliac disease are misdiagnosed as having IBS? Might be worth asking your GP to screen you for it. Check out: www.coeliac.org.uk/healthcare-professionals/diagnosis/irritable-bowel-syndrome-ibs/
