To have had enough!

Of my IBS!
I only dared to treat myself to a bloody bacon and egg sandwich and some roast chicken on Sunday and now my guts feel like a washing machine. I'm bloated, gassy, in pain and feel bleugh, all because I just wanted to eat nice things! It sucks and I've had enough!
Any tips to help me out (as I feel like this a lot of the time, just worse when I have been naughty!)
I don't smoke anymore, given up spicy food, don't drink alcohol or caffeine, all because of my guts (well the giving up smoking was a good thing!) but I miss curries, I miss coffee, I miss having a nice glass of wine but can't even contemplate these things Sad
So I'm just looking for ideas to make my life and eating a bit more enjoyable!!

Has anyone had any success in stopping (fresh) blood in there stool? I have never successfully resolved that although alcohol def a trigger

pinkbraces · 09/05/2017 22:30

I would really recommend the FODMAP diet. I am just coming to the end of it and I have never felt better. I really feel in control of my symptoms rather than the other way round.

Chesntoots · 09/05/2017 22:31

Sometimes very shit indeed - other times no shit at all!!! (hence horrific external haemorroid operation...)

Sorry about my whine, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself! I have found ginger tea and camomile tea to be quite good for me. I'm quite addicted to the ginger...

Nocabbageinmyeye · 09/05/2017 22:33

Instasista I didn't know that, thank you.

I didn't realise about Coeliac disease either SillyYak thank you. Lots of new symptoms for me over the last few weeks do just getting my head around dealing with them. Thank you all, sorry for hijacking, feel better soon op

putdownyourphone · 09/05/2017 22:34

Optibac do probiotics for IBS

Nocabbageinmyeye · 09/05/2017 22:37

Instasista I bled constantly for three years, heavily and I was put on Salofalk and Predsol about four weeks ago and it has completely stopped, now I am not sure if these are an option, I don't know much about them but they have stopped my bleeding

Instasista · 09/05/2017 22:37

Wow thanks no cabbage will investigate. My GP hasn't been helpful!

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 22:40

@Chesntoots don't apologise, it's good to whine!!
I can't drink any hot drinks unfortunately, another thing I had to give up, along with soup! Bloody weird IBS guts!!

Joining in the grumpy train! Mine is better now than it was, but I have to limit my red meat in take, and veggies and pulses... interesting dairy is generally fine, as are onions etc. Tried FODMAPing but it was almost impossible, and I struggled to believe it because I go through phases when I can eat what I want and be ok.

I'm on colofac/mebeverine - find it better than buscopan. Plus omeprazole daily, and buscopan, loperamide and painkillers as required. Was on domperidone too, but it's contraindicated mainly now.

Love to all the other sufferers - my work are v unsympathetic - expecting vast amounts of overtime even if I'm suffering. My occupational health assessment is based on the assumption that I can have work my contracted hours. Hah, fat chance. Standing on the M1/equiv has deffo on my mind when I've been at my worst. Hope others suffering is as minimal as possible!

Italiangreyhound · 09/05/2017 22:45

I too have IBS. It is horrible. I am keeping a food diary and seeing my GP.

OP sorry to hear about your tum, no answers from me but a lot of sympathy.

Thanks
digitdisaster · 09/05/2017 22:47

Acidophilus from a health shop. Amazing.

Italiangreyhound · 09/05/2017 22:51

I just looked at probiotics and it said "Probiotic supplement (containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium). Probiotics, or "friendly" bacteria, help your digestive system function properly. Many studies show that probiotics help relieve symptoms of IBS, including abdominal pain, gas, and constipation."

But I don't have constipation, I have the opposite affect!

Any ideas, please? Thanks.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 09/05/2017 22:52

Hope you get somewhere Instasista it's horrible I know

Ames33 · 09/05/2017 22:52

I'm loving all these suggestions, ta!
Does it ever effect any of your heads?
Sounds weird but I always seem to get a headache/buzzy fuzzy head when I have a bad attack!

I've had to cut out wheat, dairy, pulses and eggs, and doing this seemed to work for a while. Also can't tolerate any dried fruit or high fibre. But something else has set me off recently and I crapped myself in the car last week Sad. Am so loose that it rarely touches the sides ( sorry for TMI!). Mebeverine helps, but sometimes the bloating is horrendous
Flowers to everyone suffering

Esssa · 09/05/2017 23:00

I have no personal experience of ibs but I've seen it mentioned on a forum I look at. It's a forum for huel, a nutritionally complete food consumed mainly as a shake. A few different posters have said that by using huel for 1-2 meals per day they don't have to be anywhere near as careful with the rest of what they eat. I'm using it for calorie reduction purposes and because I'm lazy. Seems to be working for me so far.

Haudyerwheesht · 09/05/2017 23:00

I saw my GP a while ago and he upped my anti anxiety medication as apparently it can also help IBS. I'm now on 200mg of sertraline a day and it has helped SO much it's amazing.

Lulukat · 09/05/2017 23:01

I have IBS (or Doctors reason once you go back after 6 weeks. That was 15 years ago) but mine is like a tap. My triggers for sure are eating anything, 15 mins later or less i'm doubled over. It's not nice but fed up of going to the doctors they are no help at all

Etymology23 · 09/05/2017 23:01

Aww gee wage slave that sucks! Hopefully it didn't do lasting damage. I have to WFH when I'm like that! I Keep spare clothes in the car though in case, which is a sucky enough thing to have to do.

PlayOnWurtz · 09/05/2017 23:02

Low fat low grain high protein seems to be helping me. I don't drink anything but water and junk food is in strict moderation. It's the only way I can keep my previously nasty IBS and gastritis under control.

PlayOnWurtz · 09/05/2017 23:03

I get constipated with my IBS and when it's bad I have to take a maintenance dose of lactulose to help me out otherwise I'm in agony

wageslave · 09/05/2017 23:10

Well Eytomology I'm sure the smell will fade eventually, luckily I rarely give anyone a lift. I was on the way to a meeting and had to go commando, luckily I was wearing a dress, so managed to clean up and bin my knickers and tights. I've taken to sitting on a plastic bag and towel when driving, taking spare clothes and having Imodium in my bag. The worst damage is to my confidence, I feel it could happen again at any moment. And having had 2 lots of surgery for piles and polyps I have been advised to have a high fibre diet Shock

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 09/05/2017 23:28

I feel your pain. I had life-ruining IBS for years. I tried cutting all kinds of things out of my diet - wheat, dairy, high-fibre foods, chocolate, coffee, alcohol...all the usual suspects. Nothing helped. It was definitely worse after over-eating, but it didn't seem to matter what I'd been eating. There was also a definite worsening of symptoms when I was stressed.

Miraculously, it suddenly stopped when I got pregnant. I had one minor episode during pregnancy and none at all for about a year afterwards. It did come back eventually, but episodes were milder, less frequent and about a thousand times more manageable.

I don't know why this was, but I have a few theories:

  1. While pregnant, I completely went off fizzy drinks, which I used to guzzle copiously. Developed a passion for Lady Grey tea instead. Either the tea had healing powers or the pop was at fault all along.
  1. My pregnancy hormones did something magical. Aside from when they sent me a bit whappy with emotional outbursts, I generally felt amazingly serene during pregnancy and mat leave, and my stress levels plummeted. That could have explained it.
  1. I had PND and was treated with low-dose SSRI's for about 8 months. I've since found out that these have been successfully tested in treating IBS-type symptoms. (I see a PP has also had some luck with this) So maybe they were quietly re-setting something in my gut as well as fixing my broken brain!
  1. While pregnant I couldn't eat much in one go, and ate little and often instead of big meals. I kept up this habit while breastfeeding because it was hard to find time to cook and sit down to eat a big meal. Maybe the fact that I didn't over-eat any more was the clincher.

Or maybe none of these had anything to do with it. Maybe I just grew out of it. But I thought it worth mentioning because I know how debilitating it is, and how you'd do anything for a clue about how to make it go away. I hope you find your answer soon!
