To ask my neighbour not to put a sprinkler on for 2-3 hours every night?

He's been doing this for the last few weeks, even when it's been cold and cloudy. In the south west but the sprinkler is on for hours almost everyday.

The noise is annoying and it feels really wasteful. I'm probably being unreasonable, but it makes no logical sense one to even have it on, two to have it on for so long.

His water bill and on his property, sorry think you are being unreasonable. Understand it must be really annoying noise wise though so sympathise.

Mysterycat23 · 09/05/2017 19:33

Sadly it's his water to use as he likes.

Is it so loud that closing the windows doesn't shut out the sound?

FiveShelties · 09/05/2017 19:34

Does he have a water meter?

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 19:36

No he doesn't have a meter, windows aren't great and I work in the garage at night so can hear it loudly.

Surely hosepipe bans will come in soon?

Surely the sounds of falling water is relaxing?

Yabu and you don't actually k ow if he has a water meter! Unless you have asked him

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 19:41

No it is not relaxing and it's a constant annoying ticking and clicking as it rotates around.

What a stupid comment saying I don't know if he has a metre, it's next to mine under the pavement so yes I do know.

Serious gardeners will water their gardens all year long even in winter. Is it his lawn he's watering? If it's his pride and joy I can understand why he's putting a lot of effort in.

There are so many threads recently about people being annoyed by neighbour's doing seemingly innocuous things like gardening. Confused

Nomorechickens · 09/05/2017 19:42

Does he have a licence for a sprinkler. You need one in our region.

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 19:42

This isn't gardening it's 2-3 hours of an annoying constant noise every night. It's just a lawn.

OP posts:
PeaFaceMcgee · 09/05/2017 19:43

What did they say when you told them nicely that the noise was disruptive?

Wolfiefan · 09/05/2017 19:45

How long is the sprinkler actually on for?
What time?
Can you hear it from your house or just your garage?
If it's not on at an unsociable time (eg middle of the night) and can't be heard in the actual house then I don't really see what you can do. You may find it irritating and deem it unnecessary but clearly they don't.

Deux · 09/05/2017 19:46

Of course watering the lawn is a big part of gardening to someone who's lawn is their pride and joy.

Speak to him if it's bothering you that much or gets some noise cancelling ear phones or ear plugs. Or complain to the council/waterboard/neighbourhood watch.

Sheesh.

Fluffyears · 09/05/2017 19:48

Maybe just a lawn but mine cost a fortune to get laid and needs watering every day as it's newly laid turf. I'm not going to let it die and waste the money I spent on it.

ForalltheSaints · 09/05/2017 19:49

If it is at midnight then it is unreasonable. It seems to be much earlier so in my view not really a problem.

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 19:50

From 6 to 8-9ish. No was posting this thread for advice before approaching.

He isn't a gardener, his garden is just lawn. Anyway a don't know any gardener that waters a lawn every night for so long. My granddad looked after his garden like it was a full time job and he only ever watered the lawn at the height of the summer and not for more than 10 mins. We haven't had a hot long summer like back then for years anyway.

DH put grass seeds down a few weeks ago, to cover the patches. He puts the sprinkler on every evening for about 10/15 minutes. There's been times he's forgot, and the garden has been like a swamp, as he's left it on for 1/2 hours Blush. Any chance your neighbour has memory problems, or just forgets he puts it on? 2/3 hours is an awfully long time to water the grass. Although I'm sure it's annoying, there's not much you can do. You could ask him general chit chat about his gardening, and slide it in if it's really bothering you.

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 19:53

Not so sure about memory problems but maybe absent minded. It was still going on a Friday night at 11pm the other night, but it's usually off by night. 15 mins would be totally fine, it's the hours it's on for.

He'll be stuffed if you end up with a hosepipe ban, this year.

Blowingthroughthejasmineinmymi · 09/05/2017 19:55

Grin usually I am all for neighbours living in harmony and not disrupting anyone elses life but in this occasion I think your being V unresonable.

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 19:58

I imagine his grass will be stuffed if there is a ban and it hasn't developed deep roots from being watered every day.

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 19:59

Fair enough if I'm being u, but please do explain why?

OP posts:
Hont1986 · 09/05/2017 20:01

What kind of work are you doing in the garage? Any banging, sawing, etc?

brexitstolemyfuture · 09/05/2017 20:04

embroidery by hand, no I'm quiet.

YANBU. Pissing drinking water on the lawn all that time is disgusting.

BluePeppers · 09/05/2017 20:10

On this occasion, I think YABU.
Yes it's noisy but it's also not a very loud noise. It happens during very sociable hours.
Not really comparable to let's say loud music or noise at 11.00pm.

As for it being a waste of water. I agree with you. Just as much as I can understand using that in dryer area, here it really doesn't make sense. Grass stays green anyway all on its own thanks to the water from the sky!
However, if you start going round trying to tell people they are wasting water/energy with their ways of doing things, you are on a lost battle. Both because there is much too many people who do that. And because it's not up to you to police the way people are living their life.
