I just got overpaid...

SugarnetMum · 09/05/2017 16:50

So I was due 240 euros for 26 hours but got paid 305 euros... Its cash.

I was racking my brain trying to think whether it was money for hours I hadn't been paid for, but nope I'm up to scratch.

A few weeks ago my boss pretended he couldn't find my wages, I thought he might have took them back to pay for something else, thinking id forgotten... Aibu to keep the money? Or is it his mistake , he should keep a closer eye...?

You should tell your boss and see what he says not just keep the money

DJBaggySmalls · 09/05/2017 16:54

Did you get the previous wages that he lost?

JacquesHammer · 09/05/2017 16:55

Of course you shouldn't just keep the money. You should explain the situation to your boss.

SugarnetMum · 09/05/2017 16:56

Yes I did get them after an extra 5 days waiting.

I was going to keep them for a few days and not spend until he says anything

Beerwench · 09/05/2017 16:58

Please don't keep it, or if you do make sure you won't be left short by them taking it the following week/month.
I got paid too much and questioned it, was told it was right - all verbally, spent it. 3 months later and the manager I questioned it with has left and I lose half my wage without warning, on an overpayment reclaw.
As I had no proof I'd questioned it and the manager was long gone, I spent a very meagre month that month.

LoveB · 09/05/2017 16:59

I think you should be honest - you never know, he might let you keep it! And either way, you'll be in the good books.

Jupitar · 09/05/2017 17:01

Didn't you get a wage slip which shows what you've been paid for?

Bulldogclips · 09/05/2017 17:02

Tell your boss.

SugarnetMum · 09/05/2017 17:03

No no wage slip, its in a very non formal environment .. Food service , paid in cash, only a handful of employees, not through books

DisneyMillie · 09/05/2017 17:06

Well it's illegal to pay you that way so he's not going to report you for keeping it but it's not the right thing to do.

ImperialBlether · 09/05/2017 17:11

Oh come on, giving her her wages 5 days late is worse! I'd put the money to one side and give it back if he asked. And I'm someone who'd go back to the shop if I took something by mistake.

AdoraBell · 09/05/2017 17:18

Tell your boss otherwise you'll be forever wondering if he'll ask for it back.

Empireoftheclouds · 09/05/2017 17:23

Well it's illegal to pay you that way so he's not going to report you for keeping it but it's not the right thing to do. is it illegal though? The OP has not disclosed which country she is in

SugarnetMum · 09/05/2017 17:25

Yes its illegal , but you'd be surprised is what a lot of food service establishments do. I also work in a restaurant and I'm paid cash too.

And yes I think I'll do that ( keep it to one side and if he asks ill return it).

OP posts:
GlitteryFluff · 09/05/2017 17:27

I'd be honest and tell him, see if he asks for it back. He might let you keep it.
Honesty is a big deal IMO.

SugarnetMum · 09/05/2017 17:27

I'm in Ireland btw. The cash thing is done a lot here, even in bars, only the manager who's on a salary gets paid through the bank and the rest of the staff cash in hand (not always, just sometimes)

OP posts:
morningconstitutional2017 · 09/05/2017 17:28

I think I'd be inclined to say something. Is it possible that he's given you too much to see if you're honest enough to mention it? That's me being suspicious of it being a trap.

BeMorePanda · 09/05/2017 17:33

Tips?
its a weird way to get paid cash isn't is? €9.23 per hour?

SabineUndine · 09/05/2017 17:35

My employer overpaid me for a whole year and I didn't realise it. When they found out, they wanted the money back. Apparently the law is on their side.

So I'd give it back before he notices, then you've got the moral high ground too.

Inertia · 09/05/2017 17:37

I'd offer to pay it back but insist on paying via bank transfer or cheque so that there is a record of it.

GwenStaceyRocks · 09/05/2017 17:38

I'd tell him because I'm not a thief.
I don't see why you think it's ok. It's also likely to cause problems if he is trying to reconcile accounts at the end of the day or the end of the week, and realises the shortfall. Then everyone will fall under suspicion which is a shit position to put your colleagues in.

VerySadInside · 09/05/2017 17:41

TBH, you are already stealing form the rest of the country by not paying tax so might as well steal from your morally corrupt boss twice.

BarleysFiddle · 09/05/2017 17:41

If he's paying you 9.23/hour, that's less than minimum wage in Ireland. (Regardless of whether you're paid cash or not.) Min wage is 9.25.

SugarnetMum · 09/05/2017 17:41

I thought he might have set a trap too!! But its not like I'm new or anything so I'm sure he wouldn't bother..tbh I think maybe he was confused and math skills aren't top notch?

Actually..tips is another reason why I should keep it! Its the only food business I've ever worked in where we don't get the tips!!! There's a tip jar, and of course people throw in money when you've given good service (which I'm passionate about and always do my best, I love the hospitality industry) and the tips get fucked into the till and we get told 'we get them at the end of the year' ha Grin biggest lot of bs I've ever heard. Think I have my answer now.

I'd keep my mouth shut as would anyone in real life. MN is very very moral about anything that could possibly be seen as 'stealing' however.
