....going to be tried for blasphemy? I was so looking forward to it!

Why? Grin

I'm just relieved he isn't! I'm Irish and we would be a laughing stock if this went ahead - I can't believe it was even a possibility in the first place

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2017 10:40

Because a) it would have been fun and b) blasphemy laws would not have survived it.

It was never a possibility. The laws were specifically designed so that no-one could ever actually be prosecuted.

Maudlinmaud · 09/05/2017 10:48

I read this earlier in the week and died a little inside as I'm Irish. Please let this be brushed under the carpet and never be spoken about again Blush
I like Fry his portrayal of Wilde was brillant.

Orlantina · 09/05/2017 10:48

If you have a law that someone breaks and don't do anything about it, what's the point in the law?

If someone else gets prosecuted, they could reasonably ask why Stephen Fry wasn't prosecuted.

MaudGonneMad · 09/05/2017 10:49

YABU his ego would have been even more inflated had he been prosecuted.

Pepsi13max · 09/05/2017 10:50

Yeah it is a bloody stupid law, that I didn't realise existed until this came up. It is amusing reading some of the comments on FB about it, by outraged religious types who wanted him to be prosecuted.

user1493022461 · 09/05/2017 10:52

No one else will get prosecuted, thats the point. And SF never could have been.

AgainstTheOddsNo2 · 09/05/2017 10:54

His ego? Have you read anything by, or about, him. His ego is not even close tof how big it should be!

Nicemil1 · 09/05/2017 11:01

Oh could you elucidate op save me googling haven't heard this

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/05/2017 11:02

Orlantina, I think there are quite a few laws nobody would bother about today, that have never been repealed.

I have a feeling there's still one to say that all able bodied men over 16 must go and practise their archery at the butts every Saturday morning, so they're ready to go and fight off the dastardly French.

JiminnyCricket · 09/05/2017 11:03

My favourite quote on this story was in the times, it simply said:

'You're Christian.. so forgive.'

Pretty much shuts down any news for a blasphemy law in the first place Grin

Orlantina · 09/05/2017 11:11

getting

TBF - the archery law is very old.
Blasphemy was introduced as an amendment to the defamation act in 2009

fluentinsarcasm · 09/05/2017 11:16

Absolutely Againtheodds

MaidenMotherCrone · 09/05/2017 11:19

I second this /|\

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 09/05/2017 11:20

Totally agree bertrand it would have be awesome to watch.

MoreThanUs · 09/05/2017 11:21

YABU his ego would have been even more inflated had he been prosecuted.

Completely agree with this.

Maudlinmaud · 09/05/2017 11:22

I watched this series at the time, the only episode which left me "outraged" was Ronan Keatings. Hmm

Terfing · 09/05/2017 11:24

I too would have liked to have seen this. He would have destroyed them in court!

LurkingHusband · 09/05/2017 11:35

He can be a bit luvvy, but I like it when he says it like it is ...

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2017 15:41

Personally, I think in most areas Fry is a bit of a git.

But he is brilliant on atheism/humanism/religion. In fact, in any areas where he actually had to use his brains and education, rather than his luvvyness.

OP posts:
TulipsInAJug · 09/05/2017 15:49

You may think he's great on atheism because you share his views. I thought the quote was fairly offensive but nothing Christians aren't used to hearing and of course it would be ludicrous to prosecute.

He's not half as clever as he thinks he is. He's certainly no Oscar Wilde. Though I agree he would probably have thought he was, if he'd been dragged to court.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 09/05/2017 15:50

As an Irish person I was embarrassed about this story and indeed the law, even though totally unenforceable.
So glad it came to nothing, mainly because I own a Latin dictionary but have no idea where it is to translate his no doubt bombastic faux Latin legalese speech and I don't want to have to go up into the loft.

BuckinghamLass · 09/05/2017 15:51

I bet he's gutted the prosecution isn't going ahead! Attention seeking twat.

BertrandRussell · 09/05/2017 15:51

That's the point. He's great on atheism. Which means that Theists won't like what he says. There are plenty of people who are great on Theism too-I don't like what they say!
