First time posting here so here goes...

When we got married, a few years ago, a friend of DH's went off piste on our wedding gift list and bought us another item(something functional) instead. We did mention we needed one, so it was quite thoughtful but we mostly had "nice to have" things on our list! The "annoying" thing was that it isn't a model or brand I wanted. But as someone had bought us one, it always seemed pointless to buy one over these years and it has worked fine.
Now my mum has offered to buy us something as a gift, so I have asked for this item. My DH was against it as this thing still worked "fine"! He said there are better things she could get us. Having this (newer version)item would make my life so much easier, especially now with children. WIBU, if I just went ahead and tell mum to just get it anyway?

Sorry it's not very specific, want to stay anonymous obvs, and I'm sure there are worst things in the world to worry about. But I would like some mumsnetters' perspectives .... so lay them on me please!

#teamcordlessdyson

Cutlery shelf in dishwasher is a necessity but other makes have cottoned on

I hate those. Much prefer a basket.

FluffyWhiteTowels · 09/05/2017 15:48

Dyson v8 animal ..... AWESOME

Venusflytwat · 09/05/2017 15:50

Tattycat there must be something wrong with your Air Ram cos mine's the best vacuum I've ever had! Better than my old Dyson. It makes my carpets look new again. Is it under warranty?

FluffyWhiteTowels · 09/05/2017 15:51

kokusai you seriously prefer a basket that is irksome in placing big objects on the bottom shelf of dishwasher to a weeny top shelf that takes up no room ? Hmm we are all different

Hillarious · 09/05/2017 16:29

I think it was the going "off piste" comment that warranted the bridezilla reference!

rizlett · 09/05/2017 16:36

...and there was me thinking off piste meant it was some version of a rabbit..Shock

nevernotstruggling · 09/05/2017 16:40

Sleepy you are so not being unreasonable!!! We never use the big vacuum only ever the cordless dyson. It's life changing!

sleepystate · 09/05/2017 17:20

I think I will get the dyson then. Thanks for the comments everyone. DH and the friend won't be that bothered in reality - I think! I think he would just rather we get something we haven't got already rather than replacing something. I do agree with not wasting something and conscious of adding to landfill, the old vacuum will go to a charity shop and could serve someone for a few more years yet.

Some people are a bit hung up on me using "off piste". It's just a metaphor guys! Buying someone a vacuum cleaner is a bit unusual for a wedding present, hence why it is off piste! We didn't mind him buying us something not from our list, and as I stated originally, we really appreciated it. In fact, we said to guests that they didn't have to get anything at all! But people do buy wedding gifts and a list of things we actually wanted made sense.

In reference to people who thinks lists are cringeworthy, I have never attended a wedding where I didn't get them a generous gift, but the ones where they didn't have a list, I will forever wonder whether they liked it/ to their taste, whether it was the right thing or whether they needed it/ already had it! If you're not a fan of wedding lists, you've probably never planned a wedding or are people who are happy to not buy gifts!

I think I've made my point!
Might start a thread about wedding lists... Wink

I find the dyson ok for short pile carpets and for vacuuming the sofas but shit on the tiled kitchen floor. Just seems to blow stuff around or it comes back out as soon as you switch off. Used to have an old swivel sweeper that was better on hard floor. I was upset when that broke.

Still easier than plugging one in and lugging it round the house though!

Haint · 09/05/2017 17:27

This seems a good place to ask an off piste question:
Does a cordless dyson have to hang on a wall near a plug? Obvs you have to charge it, I just dint want it on display in the kitchen and the big cupboard hasn't got a plug in it

29Palms · 09/05/2017 17:59

Assuming you have an upstairs, it's just so damn convenient to have two working vacuum cleaners anyway! I have an older one I keep upstairs, and it saves so much effort.

ijustwannadance · 09/05/2017 19:24

No it doesn't have to hang on a wall but you'd still have to charge it regularly and as it's top heavy it's still easier to store in the wall mounted holder than lie it on the floor. Although motor bit would be fine on a shelf if you took long pipe off.

sleepystate · 10/05/2017 08:49

I would just add: get anything other than Vax for all the above posters who are considering new hoovers! Our current one is an upright vax, it's so loud, my ears are ringing when I turn it off, the kids cry through the whole process. Hence why I wanted to replace it!

Get the Dyson, you always need a spare vacuum with a Dyson anyway.

Sometimes you haven't charged them properly, sometimes they run out of charge at the wrong moment, but mostly they are great. They are life changers.

NoSherryForMe · 10/05/2017 17:44

Our cordless Dyson changed my life! Sooo much easier than getting the big Hoover out for localised toddler mishaps or doing the stairs. I still prefer the Miele Cat and Dog for vacuuming large areas, though.

pringlecat · 10/05/2017 22:32

The difference between a good cordless hoover and a traditional corded hoover is huge. Game changer. Wouldn't hesitate to upgrade even if the corded hoover was still perfectly functional.

AyeAmarok · 10/05/2017 22:36

Another whose cordless Dyson changed their life here.

Go for it OP. My home is hoovered ten thousand times more often since we got one.

glueandstick · 10/05/2017 22:45

Get the cordless dyson. Amazing things.

RhiWrites · 11/05/2017 09:58

I really like my upright vax!
