First time posting here so here goes...

When we got married, a few years ago, a friend of DH's went off piste on our wedding gift list and bought us another item(something functional) instead. We did mention we needed one, so it was quite thoughtful but we mostly had "nice to have" things on our list! The "annoying" thing was that it isn't a model or brand I wanted. But as someone had bought us one, it always seemed pointless to buy one over these years and it has worked fine.
Now my mum has offered to buy us something as a gift, so I have asked for this item. My DH was against it as this thing still worked "fine"! He said there are better things she could get us. Having this (newer version)item would make my life so much easier, especially now with children. WIBU, if I just went ahead and tell mum to just get it anyway?

Sorry it's not very specific, want to stay anonymous obvs, and I'm sure there are worst things in the world to worry about. But I would like some mumsnetters' perspectives .... so lay them on me please!

It's a toaster right?

And yes, a 4 slice is way more useful than a 2 slice on busy mornings.

FunkinEll · 09/05/2017 10:46

WomblingThree I have to disagree, my kitchen aid was my best wedding present Grin

cafenoirbiscuit · 09/05/2017 10:47

Get the new one and put the old one on eBay. Or freecycle.

redshoeblueshoe · 09/05/2017 10:48

YABU - unless you give us a clue.

amusedbush · 09/05/2017 10:51

I thought Kitchenaid vs Kenwood but now I agree, it's probably a cordless Dyson. I really want a Kitchenaid and a cordless Dyson Sad

nevernotstruggling · 09/05/2017 10:52

I said nothing when my friend bought a morphy Richards crumb Hoover (which is rubbish) but smiled yesterday when I noticed she bought the dyson cordless 6 months later :-) op if this is the Item yanbu!!

Mrs9C · 09/05/2017 10:54

I vote against a cordless Dyson, if that's what it is, what you've got is probably better!

Pinkheart5917 · 09/05/2017 10:57

For me the dyson cordless was Meh, I've given it to mil this week. I just didn't think the cordless dyson was worth the money at all.

WE MUST KNOW WHAT IT IS.......PLEASE ;-~

MirandaWest · 09/05/2017 11:03

I'd agree it depends what it is.

I have some sonos speakers. Before them I had a different speaker which worked in that you could hear music but the sound quality wasn't as good and it didn't let me listen to ie Spotify through it. So getting a new speaker was a good thing as it was better.

nevernotstruggling · 09/05/2017 11:05

I have two cordless dysons. There's no going back!

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 09/05/2017 11:05

You'll need to tell us what it is and what will become of the discarded item.

blackteasplease · 09/05/2017 11:06

I have a cordless Dyson. Get one.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 09/05/2017 11:06

P.S. Kitchenaid is shit, cordless Dyson is fine but we found a £100 version from another brand which is much better.

WorknameJimEllis · 09/05/2017 11:08

I love my cordless days on

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/05/2017 11:09

Could you block the tube and burn out the motor?

WorknameJimEllis · 09/05/2017 11:09

*dyson ffs

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/05/2017 11:11

It's up to your mother what she buys you, ultimately.

Do both you and DH use this item?

What are the better things DH thinks you could find use for?

The old one might need replacing sooner than DH thinks. If it's in good nick he can put it up for sale, as suggested.

Inertia · 09/05/2017 11:12

If it would make your life a great deal easier, then ask your mum for it.

Your DH can use the older version when it's his turn to do the job which requires this item.

user1489179512 · 09/05/2017 11:13

Wedding lists are totally cringeworthy.

user1489179512 · 09/05/2017 11:15

As for went "off piste" - oh my goodness. Bridezilla r us.

purplecollar · 09/05/2017 11:15

I think it's a blender.

Your mistake here was discussing it with your dh. I'd have just said yes to my dm.

I love the thread title though. I have a friend who insists on handing everything down to her younger one. Including a £4 book bag that never works - as soon as you hold the handle it falls open and everything falls out. I so want to say to her "just get a new one!". We go through the everything falling out on the pavement pretty much daily though.

Floggingmolly · 09/05/2017 11:15

Especially when full of nice things and the recipient is pissed off to get the less shiny version...
