I've tried google. It says it means cute and gave the example of a bonnie baby.

AIBU to think this isn't a term that should be used for a woman nearing 30?!

It means fat where I live.

frogsgoladidahdidah · 06/05/2017 23:21

It's a term to say you are pretty. Take the compliment. Grin

DoFliesHaveKnees · 06/05/2017 23:21

Are you in Scotland?

C4Envelope · 06/05/2017 23:22

Oh but in Scotland, Bonnie, is a term of endearment meaning not only beautiful but charming and kind. Go you! Halo

forfuckssakenet · 06/05/2017 23:22

It's a compliment! It's a Scottish word. Doesn't always need to relate to a baby. I wouldn't say cute. I'd say pretty or lovely was the closest English word.

AtSea1979 · 06/05/2017 23:22

Bonnie is used a lot where I am, in north. Why shouldn't a 30 year old be bonnie? Seems a bit ageist. Are you suggesting every one past 30 is ugly?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/05/2017 23:22

It means pretty and vibrant were I live

ShatnersBassoon · 06/05/2017 23:22

It's not meant as an insult, so forget about it.

WellErrr · 06/05/2017 23:22

Means pretty.

In Scotland it's pretty in Yorkshire it's fat

bluebellmount · 06/05/2017 23:24

Definitely fat in the midlands.

Bambambini · 06/05/2017 23:24

They must have been pretty old

reetgood · 06/05/2017 23:25

I'm in the north of England, and I'd use to mean pretty - agree lovely is closest. I'd spell it bonny, though.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 06/05/2017 23:28

Bonny = attractive/beautiful.

Bonny lass / gorgeous girl.

From Bon, French for good.

bluebellmount · 06/05/2017 23:30

I got called bonny last week. It was definitely not a compliment!

JustKeepDancing · 06/05/2017 23:31

I'm a Yorkshire girl living in Scotland and I've never heard it mean fat? To me it's a "natural" kind of attractiveness. Comfortable and confident. Definitely a compliment!

DurhamDurham · 06/05/2017 23:31

I'm in NE and bonny for a baby would mean chubby and gorgeous but when used for women in general it means attractive or very healthy.

bluebellmount · 06/05/2017 23:32

I imagine it's one of those words with regional variations, but it's usually possible to work out the meaning from the context.

BlondeB83 · 06/05/2017 23:33

It means pretty here in the North Smile

squoosh · 06/05/2017 23:37

The guy who tiled my bathroom was called Bonnie Tiler 😅

Or at least his business was.

qumquat · 06/05/2017 23:37

Bonnie means nice where I'm from. About personality rather than appearance. (North East)

OverAndAbove · 06/05/2017 23:39

Yes, pretty in a healthy, natural sort of a way.

Definitely something to be aspired to - hence "bonny baby" competitions!

Maryann1975 · 06/05/2017 23:42

Have you been talking to my grandma? She calls lots of people bonny (also pets, her last two cats were both Bonnies and now she's is in care, she has lots of teddies called bonny).
She lives in the midlands but comes from the north and would have definitely meant it politely- I guess she means pretty. It would never be meant to insult anyone.

user1493797837 · 06/05/2017 23:45

They were in their 60s.

I'm a size 12. Definitely not fat.

I've never ever been described that way. It went. 'Ah you are really lovely. Very bonnie.'
