Family weekend
Family time
Family day

I have a family but I don't feel the need to refer to family supermarket trip, family visit to great aunt Elsie, family evening. Especially when you see your family every day, it's not like you have to make weekends special because you're away a month at a time.

It irks me.

And I'm also in a bad mood so needed an outlet 😡

Some people like to reserve specific time to spend with their family. I would have thought the term was okay for that?

stargirl1701 · 05/05/2017 18:47

Is it not more about priorities? The family agree that a specific day/time is dedicated to just being a family and nothing else takes priority over it?

moreslackthanslick · 05/05/2017 18:47

It makes me roll my eyes too OP.

GivenupontheGarden · 05/05/2017 18:48

I find when people prefix something with 'family xxxxx' it's usually because they are deliberately trying to make you feel excluded, OR trying to force you to do something they know you don't want to do.

fruityb · 05/05/2017 18:56

Why not - looking forward to the weekend after being at work all week. Why does it have to be looking forward to a "family weekend"? Or "a nice day out today" instead of "what a great family day we had". It makes it sound like spending time with their family isn't something they do on a daily basis. Like they've had to set aside time as a family when really it'll be the same as every other weekend.

I just find it a bit smug. Plus as I said I'm grumpy. We're going on holiday next week but at no point will I be gloating about my "quality family time" on Facebook.

And I'm still grumpy.

Guilty of this.

We have 2dc, both work and do a fair bit of juggling between us to keep all our balls in the air. We also have a lot of family who like to see us and the dc which is lovely...but often MIL will pop in of an evening and my parents and sisters will suggest xyz activity on a weekend...so of our free time all together we also spend a decent amount of it with other people too.

Sometimes we have 'a family day out' or 'a family meal' or 'a family film day'. We make an effort to spend time with just the four of us and calling it 'our family x' is polite code to the rest of our relatives that they're not welcome to join us or pop in this time, which works well 😁

Dbsparkles · 05/05/2017 19:00

It's not as bad as 'date night', that winds me right up!

LadyPW · 05/05/2017 19:04

I've always assumed that it meant that people were doing something as a whole unit rather than doing their own thing. It's just a description. I can't see the problem. It's no different to having a girls' night out or whatever.

fruityb · 05/05/2017 19:06

Oh they use that one too! "Mark and Mandy's day of fun!" Etc.

I guess I just find outward expressions of how awesome they are irritating. I am awesome I don't need to tell Facebook all the time 😛

Purplepicnic · 05/05/2017 19:08

I know what you mean - there seems an air of smugness about it, I don't know why.

DotForShort · 05/05/2017 19:08

What about "my little family"? For some reason I find that phrase intensely irritating. Also having a grumpy day.Smile

fruityb · 05/05/2017 19:12

Yes! Our little family is worse! Particularly when used by someone who has been seeing a new boyfriend for a week.

I've actually made a point of not saying it anywhere - I think it links with my hatred of Eastenders where you hear that word every ten seconds.

OP posts:
OVienna · 05/05/2017 19:12

Yup. Smother 'em. Also - date night. I'll think of more things that irritate me too.

Persephone70 · 05/05/2017 19:13

I had to chuckle at this. I have an acquaintance that constantly says 'weekends are family time for us' - then it transpires her husband spends most of their family time watching box sets on the sofa and their children are on marathon Xbox sessions (whilst acquaintance does housework and moans that she has to do everything). That is 'family time' I could do without 😆.
Dbsparkles I am wholeheartedly with you on the 'date night' cringe 😂

ilovesooty · 05/05/2017 19:16

Throw in "family traditions" as well.

fruityb · 05/05/2017 19:16

That's it! I'd get it if it was an awesome day out or something but usually it's just a Saturday....

OP posts:
Olddear · 05/05/2017 19:18

Date night or anything pre-fixed with 'mummy' 'mummy time/friends etc....can't bear it.

pieceofpurplesky · 05/05/2017 19:18
