To take DS to GP tomorrow?

My 3 month old son hasnt had a dirty nappy for 3 days. Very unusual for him, he usually goes at least once a day. A quick google search tells me this is normal for breastfed babies, however he's formula fed.

He seems to be in a lot of pain in his tummy, does this warrant a trip to the GP tomorrow if he's still not had a dirty nappy?

I would definitely take him.

harderandharder2breathe · 04/05/2017 14:29

Yes, especially since he's in pain

Hope he feels better soon Flowers

you could try rubbing his belly (in a clockwise direction) ,or lay him down and move his legs like he's riding a bicycle.... it could help things move.

has he had anything different to eat? i know some mums start weaning around 3 months (not saying you are....just trying to cover things)....if so then stop feeding anything else until things are sorted.

though if by tomorrow he hasn't gone and still looks uncomfortable/in pain then go to the gp tomorrow...esp if its out of the ordinary with him.

IF he looks to be in a lot of pain then try phoning hv for advice, or 111 and ask their advice. (in fact you could probs try calling hv anyway for advice) x

MotherofBoy · 04/05/2017 14:32

Yes take him. My baby was breastfed and had awful constipation. Passed pellets poor boy. Sorted sooner rather than later in my experience. Don't leave it

BeyondThePage · 04/05/2017 14:32

at 3 months old would phone health visitor - changes happen to their gut about now, so it is quite a common problem and the health visitor should be able to put your mind at rest.

Velvetbee · 04/05/2017 14:34

We had this with DS, a HV told me to try orange juice and warm water then said 'If that doesn't work, brown sugar in warm water will, but I'm not allowed to tell you that.' She was right, it did.

wickerlampshade · 04/05/2017 14:34

if you're worried then of course take him. at that age I (a GP) wouldn't be bothered if he's otherwise well - general maxim is that babies that age can poo 7 times a day, or not go for 7 days and either of those are normal. be prepared for a poonami when it does come!

but if you're at all worried get him seen - a GP laying eyes on him is much better than random advice on the internet!

GinIsIn · 04/05/2017 14:42

Have you rubbed his tummy clockwise, given cooled boiled water, a warm bath, bicycled his legs etc?

pyjamapyjama · 04/05/2017 14:46

Thanks for the quick replies! I've tried cool boiled water, massaging his tummy and cycling his legs, all it's given is a load of wind! And we do a warm bath every evening.

Velvetbee Ive never heard of the brown sugar one, might give it a try, would it be ok to give it to him so young?

user no, he's just had his normal aptamil milk

You are never being unreasonable to take a young baby to the doctor if you have concerns. Hopefully your doctor will give some good advice - you may be able to give baby some cooled boiled water and try the exercises what other people here have suggested.
My daughter got constipated a lot of this age but grew out of it. She went from pooing every 3-5 days now to once a day on average.
There are some baby massage videos on YouTube which you might find useful also.

Karen781 · 04/05/2017 14:49

Should add, I found things improved once she got more active. Plenty of play mat time helps!

Allfednonedead · 04/05/2017 14:50

At that age DS1 had a similar poo pause. On Day 3 I took him to a mother and baby showing of Norwegian Wood - a v beautiful, atmospheric, quiet film. Lots of depressed Japanese students staring in silence at beautiful empty landscapes.
With Dolby surround sound pooing and farting noises from my precious baby.
The whole cinema applauded.

TinyTear · 04/05/2017 14:59

brand new white clothes?

nappy free on your best sofa/carpet?

1AnnoyingOrange · 04/05/2017 14:59

Just pleased someone else uses the term poonami and it's not just me!

Jaysis · 04/05/2017 15:03

Sugar water is gentle on the tummy and it worked for the 3 month bowel strike we had. A good teaspoon of brown sugar in boiled water and leave it too cool.

Never ever saw a poo that big. I swear it was cow-pat sized and filled 3 nappies.

wickerlampshade · 04/05/2017 15:05

Just pleased someone else uses the term poonami and it's not just me!

it's a recognised medical term......

theredjellybean · 04/05/2017 15:08

another GP here who advises the brown sugar water trick...
obviosuly after ruling out any serious underlying problems
if your DS seems well in himself, no temps, no vomiting, not overly lethargic and still feeding well, then give the sugar water a go.
Yes Poonami is definitely a well recognised medical term !!

TinyTear · 04/05/2017 15:52

Poonami = the one that flows down the leg holes
Pooxplosion = the one that explodes up the back

Empireoftheclouds · 04/05/2017 15:55

I wouldn't wait until tomorrow, can you not call them today?

RhodaBorrocks · 04/05/2017 16:02

I was extremely constipated as a baby. Blush Brown sugar in water was the only thing that worked. My parents gave it on paediatrician advice!

And I had my bowels stretched surgically at 8 weeks old - my parents were giving me sugar water in the run up to the surgery so I would go. I wouldn't say 3 months is too young if it serves a purpose. You nay only need to do it once.

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 04/05/2017 16:10

My DD used to go very 5 days like clockwork, the HV said that was just how she was and nothing to worry about. If it's not normal and he usually goes more often, I would speak to the health visitor or nurse about it x

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 04/05/2017 16:11

We use poomageddon btw Grin

flapjackfairy · 04/05/2017 16:13

Tiny tear what do you call it when they do both?
I would settle for either / or but lucky me i get both !

Limedaiquirialwayslime · 04/05/2017 16:13

When DD had trouble as a baby our HV suggested ready made formula as opposed to the powder. It's a bit richer apparently so can help move things along. Worth a try. And yes, if you're concerned ring the GP. Ours always say they'd rather see you and there not be a problem than not see you and there is

pyjamapyjama · 04/05/2017 16:16

Panic over... DS let rip 20 mins ago. Definitely poomageddon. His vest and leggings are a gonner! Dump in the bath and he's a happy boy now Grin
