Posting for traffic. 3 year old. Had cold has couple of days, coughing lots. Welts all over body, appeared in last few hours - not there when she went to sleep. Was sick 48hours ago but not since.

Help, what is this?

I'd go to A & E with that, especially on a little one.

AnathemaPulsifer · 02/05/2017 00:31

I have no idea, but phone 111 and they'll triage you and get you any help needed: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHS_111

Eeeeek2 · 02/05/2017 00:37

I'd definitely ring 111, I think you'll be heading to a&e as a precaution

Wayfarersonbaby · 02/05/2017 00:39

Yes A&E, just to be safe, probably an allergic reaction or a virus but no-one at paeds A&E will mind checking a toddler over in this situation.

SumThucker · 02/05/2017 00:39

It looks like an allergic reaction to me, but call 111.

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 02/05/2017 00:39

No idea but I'd go with pps suggestion of 111 to triage you.
I had something similar a few weeks ago. I googled and it came up with hives. It was awful for a few days then disappeared.

BUT I'm not a doctor - I think you should get it checked out - just wanted to reassure you there could be a non-serious explanation X

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/05/2017 00:44

Honest answer. I have no idea, which is why I'd be taking no chances and seeking medical help immediately

Seeingadistance · 02/05/2017 00:45

I don't know what it could be, but given that this is a 3 year old, I'd be off to A&E as soon as poss.

Hopefully, you can get seen quickly and it's nothing serious and easily treated.

tinglyfing · 02/05/2017 00:55

A&E. No messing about.

EffieWilson · 02/05/2017 00:58

Mine have had that exact rash- looks awful doesn't it? Came up a few times over a few weeks. I was told it was a post viral rash, treat with piriton. 111 will advise but iirc if it passes the glass test and no temp or sickness then they are less concerned about it.

Faithless12 · 02/05/2017 00:58

DS had this after a virus, it can be post viral but I would get it looked at. His kept popping up over 48 hours or so.

EffieWilson · 02/05/2017 00:59

Ps. Just to say this was our experience not an online medical assessment...

BeeThirtythree · 02/05/2017 01:01

It looks like it could be hives. Maybe a reaction to a viral/bacterial infection. Viral infection likely if there is a cold/cough. Any stomach upsets?

Has there been any reaction to medication before? If it is a hives reaction it does not last more than few days.

Always best to be safe and get children seen by medical professionals. Call and see if you can take DS to hospital.
Hopefully it will be sorted soon and your DS will be well.

Justaboy · 02/05/2017 01:05

Unless I'm very much mistaken that looks like Urticaria, sometimes known as Hives or nettle rash its an allergic reaction to something usually cured by taking an antihistamine like Piriton.

However seeing the age of the lad and the other symptoms there may well be more to it than that. I'd deffo ring 111 and or get him of to the A&E dept. I don't think you'd be far wrong, its what has caused it that's a tad disconcerting allied to the other symptoms and his age.

Justaboy · 02/05/2017 01:07

Sorry her!.

FWIW if it is what I think it is it itches like nothing on earth!

CaramelEmporium · 02/05/2017 01:10

Thanks all. Rang 111, they've said no more Tixylix in case that's what she's developed an allergy to...and to call the docs in the morning. After my initial panic I'm thinking post viral as she's been poorly for the last couple of days but is totally fine in herself.

Justaboy · 02/05/2017 01:16

That's good then. You could try a little Piriton check the dose on the packet if tabs then crush them up mix with a little milk best if you have the syrup version.

I get his sod sometimes and it can come on very quickly mainly due to tree pollen! I usually knock back around 5 or 6 tabs and that stops it very quickly but as a young child a very small dose is needed.

Wouldn't be surprised if that is a reaction to the the Ticklyx

BeeThirtythree · 02/05/2017 01:39
  • sorry DD not your DS...autocorrect predicting gender! Hope your DD is feeling better soon and no long wait to see someone
unlucky83 · 02/05/2017 01:47

Yes that that looks like hives to me - an allergic reaction to something. But if you don't know what it is and the fact she is so young I would definitely go to the GP tomorrow if it is no better.
Assuming it isn't to tixylix - the longer you leave it the worse it MIGHT get.

I've had a reaction like that twice (never worked out what to) - it was really really itchy too - but if you itched it made it worse. Anything touching it - like clothing or lying/ sitting on it made it worse - more swollen, sorer and itchier.

The first time I had it I asked the pharmacist for advice and was given calamine cream and lotion - no anti histamine but this was 20+ yrs ago. Anyway it spread - after 48hrs I literally had it head to toe - on the soles of my feet to my scalp. And the welts ran into each other and swelled more - eg one knee was more than double its normal size and felt like it was going to explode. I phoned the GP and was told to go to A&E where they put me on high dose steroids -it took another 48hrs for it to start going down - a week to be gone. (I will never forget waiting in A&E - sitting on a hard plastic chair made the welts on my bottom worse - standing made the ones on the soles of my feet worse - I cried when they told me if it hadn't started improving in 48hrs to go back - just the idea of another 48 hrs of that ).
The second time was nowhere near as bad - I went to the GP within a day and got treatment (can't remember if it was steroids again or antihistamine). It only lasted a day or so and it never got as swollen or as widespread... but then I don't know what caused either so the first time I might have still be being exposed...

highinthesky · 02/05/2017 02:02

Definitely hives - although it doesn't unfortunately narrow down the causes! Monitor the situation closely as anaphylaxis can develop over 48 hours or beyond. Try to work out if DC has been exposed to anything new aside from the Tixylix.

Any sign of laboured breathing (more frequent and shallow), swollen tongue or tissues s a medical emergency, so don't hesitate to dial 999.

VinIsGroot · 02/05/2017 02:05

Looks like viral urticaria. My DD has had this quite a lot. Piriton or Phenergan should sort it out! It's basically hives.

SparkleSoiree · 02/05/2017 02:24

Looks like an allergy type reaction. My DD is allergic to a particular food colouring and comes out like that all over her body if she has it.

highinthesky · 02/05/2017 02:26

Looks like viral urticaria.

Pray what diagnostic superpower confirms it is viral to the exclusion of all other causes?

Italiangreyhound · 02/05/2017 02:34

CaramelEmporium I hope all will be well. You said " call the docs in the morning." I would be wanting to take her to doc so they could actually see it. That's just me being a fussy Phennela!

No idea what it is but hope all will be fine.

Thanks
VinIsGroot · 02/05/2017 23:01

Highinthesky id suggest I was viral as DM says she'd had a cold etc its very very common!
