To be shocked that a dogs purpose is a PG? When it includes kidnapping and a boy starting a house fire?

On purpose with a firework

Bloody hell
But much for a PG

Poor old dd was crying her eyes out

Op, I think you are missing the whole point of pg.

Its your call to decide if it's suitable for your child. Every child is different, and mine would have been fine with that at that age.

If you think kidnapping isn't suitable for your child - don't take her.

hazeyjane · 01/05/2017 08:50

Kidnapping happens in pretty much every Disney film and fairy story!

Some kids have specific things that scare them, dd1 is 11 and anything with dummies in leaves her a gibbering wreck. PG is a signal that there might be something that will scare some children.

Death is a tricky one because it is a part of so many stories, and a huge part of life.

NotYoda · 01/05/2017 08:51

... and 12A is a big old fudge because some thoughtless parents will take a 5 year old to see something full of gore etc

LardLizard · 01/05/2017 08:53

Well I was expecting the dog to die, I mean that happens in all dog films really doesn't it
But I totally wasn't expecting the rest

Yes sure I could have read up on it before but that would spoil any film really
Suppose the answer is watch it first
Then watch with her If suitable

A films age rating has nothing to do with whether it will make you cry or not Confused

hazeyjane · 01/05/2017 09:03

Going to the cinema to watch a film before taking her would be a bit extreme (and pricey!)

Getting an idea from parents guides online can give you a heads but she is going to see things that upset her or scare her, partly because that is a pretty individual thing and also because that's life.

CycleHire · 01/05/2017 09:07

"I could have read up on it first but that would spoil any film really"

You need to decide whether it's more important to you not to spoil the film for yourself by knowing the plot in advance or not risk upsetting your daughter with themes that will scare her. That's your call.

Madeyemoodysmum · 01/05/2017 09:08

I always think a film with actors is more real to a child than a cartoon

Maybe that's why ops dd was upset

kaitlinktm · 01/05/2017 09:08

It took me until about 6 posts in to realise this was about a film and kept pondering on the purpose of dogs and why you would need to be a Post Graduate.

Silvercatowner · 01/05/2017 09:09

Oh Toy Story 3. Do NOT watch in the week before your first precious offspring goes off to University for the first time.

LardLizard · 01/05/2017 09:09

Made yes totally agree

Somehow with cartoons it feels less real

I do think that a PG rating is putting the responsibility on you. If you don't want it, then this will continue to happen.

Mind you, I probably woudn't have taken dd to see it when she was 10, but I'd have checked it out first. I don't think knowing a bit of the plot spoils it - it's like using the bumph on the back of a book to decide whether you want to read it or not.

Expecting the censors to rate films according to your own child's particular psyche is, well, unreaonables well as impossible.

It really is your responsibility.

FlossyMooToo · 01/05/2017 09:26

Then only let your DD watch cartoons.

Why must some people expect others to parent for them?
I am sorry your DD is upset but the responsibility is yours.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 01/05/2017 09:30

I know Katinka! Capitalisation would have helped my fuddled brain.

iamavodkadrinker · 01/05/2017 10:02

If you think it's a bit much then don't let her watch it. That's what parental guidance means. You actually have to do some parenting.

FoofFighter · 01/05/2017 10:03

Most of the Disney ones are brutal when you watch them through a 3yo's eyes Shock

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2017 13:32

DD was terrified of the nasty dog in Lady and the Tramp 2. But she was HmmConfusedat me crying when we watched Black Beauty.

Iwantacampervan · 01/05/2017 13:37

'Bambi' is a U - my mother took me to see it at the cinema, I cried all the way home. I couldn't watch it with my two - no way am I watching 'Toy Story 3'

fourquenelles · 01/05/2017 13:38

There were clips on YouTube showing the actor dogs being put it in terrifying situations time and again during filming despite the film supposedly being regulated by the appropriate animal welfare organisations. For that reason I am not going to go and see this film.

fourquenelles · 01/05/2017 13:41

Ignore above. Just double checked my facts and the video was a hoax. As you were. Sorry.

Chillidawg · 01/05/2017 14:02

Teenage DS has advised that under no circumstances should I see this film. He has read the book. He monitors my cinema attendance since The War Horse incident.

userblablabla · 01/05/2017 14:09

DDog had just died when I saw the trailer to this film. I was traumatised just by those 3 minutes!

HemanOrSheRa · 01/05/2017 14:16

Teenage DS has advised that under no circumstances should I see this film. He has read the book. He monitors my cinema attendance since The War Horse incident. Grin Chilli. Your DS is right. I dare not watch this film. I've read the book and I was absolutely distraught from start to finish.

WayfaringStranger · 01/05/2017 14:25

four are you sure it was a hoax?

WannaBe · 01/05/2017 14:29

In the BFG the giant snatches the little girl from her bed and runs off with her into the night. I think that DS was about six when we read that, and I remember being Shock that that was how the chapter ended but he was oblivious. Grin
