Cleaning up after your child in fastfood place

Was eating with my Preteen daughters at McDonald's play area and someone else kid dropped their drink on the floor. When that happens to me, I would just grab a mop and clean it up myself as all cleaning equipment left in main lobby just outside play area in this Mcdonalds (separate room) and I seen other moms do the same(be it getting broom, rag or a mop). This mom decided she was to good to clean up her own kids mess so just informed manager there was a spill and a worker was forced to clean it up while mom watched.

Am I wrong in thinking that if kids make a mess you should clean it your self, especially when cleaning equipment is left out ?

I even made comment that there is a mop just outside in lobby to clean that which would have taken her 1 minute to do

No I wouldn't grab the mop etc - If was a major spillage would have got staff but I do ensure tables are clear when I leave including rubbish underneath and have taught DD that you don't leave messy tables for the server or people following etc to sort

Having said that I would be taking steps to avoid such a large spillage and it would have been pure accidental rather than anything else

OneTimeintheSunshine · 30/04/2017 20:51

I would use napkins. I wouldn't get a mop.

i would never get the mop! would report and apologise loads but would never do it myself. Not because its below me but because they have their own health and safety policy (yes its true) and they are the ones insured for carrying out, not members of the public.

i have never seen a mum or anyone mop the floor in all my years tbh.

OneTimeintheSunshine · 30/04/2017 20:52

Although having read this thread, I won't bother with napkins again, unless it's just a small spill.

Kanga59 · 30/04/2017 20:55

YABU. I'd alert the staff and apologise profusely, offering to clean it up while they insist on doing it themselves. its their job to clean , they have the equipment and gloves and signs. Don't know why they are leaving mops about the place. Are you of low self esteem?

Trifleorbust · 30/04/2017 20:56

Navy, I am just remembering the long thread about stripping the beds! Grin

What an incredibly judgemental attitude that you have that you would jump straight to the conclusion she thought she was "too good" to clean it up herself. For a spill I would always tell the staff that is just normal to me. For one thing they need to put out a wet floor sign and ensure its done properly as it's a safety hazard. I'd find it very strange for a customer to grab a mop!
I think it's also incredibly cheeky that you told her there was a mop just there as it is insinuating that she should be cleaning it herself, you really have no right to try and boss.other people around.

Mrsmadevans · 30/04/2017 20:58

I take some disbled children in wheelchairs to my local maccy d's and they do make a mess but the staff there are wonderful they don't mind a bit clearing up after them in fact they are absolutely brilliant with them and always make a fuss of them and bring them balloons and colouring stuff , they are lovely to them tbf.

Mrsmadevans · 30/04/2017 20:58

disabled!

FerrisMewler · 30/04/2017 21:06

As others have said, the mops are often colour-coded so that they are only used in certain areas of the building. If you pick up the wrong one, you could well be using the toilet mop to clean the play area floor.

Much better to let a member of staff know what's happened.

SparklyLeprechaun · 30/04/2017 21:11

Of course I wouldn't just grab a mop, what a strange thing to do. I'd tell someone and apologise. If it's a spill on the table I'd do my best with napkins.

Addley · 30/04/2017 21:14

The word mop is starting to look really peculiar.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 30/04/2017 21:21

He told me under no circumstances should I touch a mop in there because "you may use the wrong mop and that's baddddddd"

NeedsASockamnesty it is. I used to work as a hospital cleaner many moons ago and the wrath that befell someone (not me for once Halo) for using the wrong colour mop and bucket in a lab was something else. Grin

Is OP coming back?

WankingMonkey · 30/04/2017 21:43

I think I would inform the staff and offer to could clean it up and use whatever they gave me. I would not just go and grab a mop that was nearby. Actually thinking about it, when I worked in burger king, there were different mops for the seating area, the kitchen and the toilets. So if McDonalds follow this too...its possible you used the loo one in the seating area if you just grab a random one. Might have just been my manager being overly anal though as I have never seen the different coloured buckets in other Burger kings. Red was loo. Yellow kitchen. Blue seating/eating area. I still remember the codes now! It was the same with the cloths and stuff too.

For little spills napkins would suffice though.

QuestionableMouse · 30/04/2017 23:09

We have red for kitchen and blue for dining area and the toilets. They're changed between doing the loos and coming back on dining area.

Ameliablue · 30/04/2017 23:14

What's wrong with stripping the beds? It was always appreciated when I worked in house keeping.

CrazySexyCool123 · 30/04/2017 23:19

I'd have grabbed the mop. I'm also a hotel bed stripper.

Lost this thread for a second and wow so many reply's. I am in USA, specifically i am from Los Angeles so don't know if this culture is different here but like i said in my original post i seen people do this before and honestly this is not the only place i seen someone do this at. As for some comments on how to know which right "mop" to use, i always seen them use lobby mop to clean the restroom as well as the lobby. I was always taught that you return the place to the way it was before, it's not one thing that if table is little dirty then worker can easily wipe it down but when it's a big mess to try to clean it up yourself. Looking at the reply's i am starting to think that i might be wrong in my thinking.

I work in a fast food place. We would expect you to tell a member of staff so we could clean it up properly.

However, we hate it when people spill their drinks and then expect another one for free Hmm Hmm, how about no.

QuestionableMouse · 01/05/2017 00:23

My store does replace spilled drinks for free.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 01/05/2017 00:23

QuestionableMouse Mine doesn't.

MaryTheCanary · 01/05/2017 00:28

Agree with others, mops should not be left out and I would not grab their mop in any case. They have systems for doing these things.

I would apologize and clean up the worst with napkins first though.
