To go to a walk in centre

I've got tonsillitis and am sure it's bacterial as I have had this before and have white spots all over my tonsils. Feel awful, struggling to swallow and as I am 17 weeks pregnant I'm feeling even more miserable!

AIBU to consider going to a walk in centre for this? Don't think I can wait for treatment until Tuesday at the earliest, or do I just need to shut up and deal with it until then?! Hate going to any kind of walk in and wasting their and my time (if they won't prescribe antibiotics)

If you have bacterial tonsillitis you need antibiotics as soon as possible. I had severe tonsillitis over Christmas and honestly it was one of the worst things I've ever had, if you have it badly it is really awful. Don't feel bad about seeking help.

insancerre · 30/04/2017 08:46

Of course you need to go!

Rossigigi · 30/04/2017 08:48

You need to go and get some antibiotics you will only get worse without them, so no you aren't being unreasonable

BeeFarseer · 30/04/2017 08:50

You must go! Walk-in centres are for people like you - need immediate treatment, can't wait to see their normal GP, have a health condition that makes them more vulnerable (your pregnancy).

Go! Shoo! shoos you off with a flapping newspaper

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 08:51

Thanks ladies, I thought I would but didn't want to over react! Will head to the walk in centre now

Haha Bee!! Thanks for giving me my first giggle in two days!!

OP posts:
Rossigigi · 30/04/2017 17:33

How did you get on?

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 17:45

They didn't want to describe antibiotics until I have been ill for 4 days with it (and it's only been 3) as they were concerned about prescribing antibiotics to me as pregnant and was a nurse not a doctor. So complete waste of time, feeling much worse this evening and now both tonsils are completely white so think I'm just going to have to deal with it until I can see my doctor on Tuesday!

Still I was in and out within 40 mins so didn't spend the whole morning there at least. Have just spent the rest of the day in bed and drinking as many fluids as I can!

I'd go back tomorrow if you're still feeling awful. Nurses can prescribe and often in walk in clinics like that are the best person to see. Feel better soon

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 17:52

I will do, the nurse said he couldn't see the white on my tonsillitis but looked for about 30 seconds and even my DH can see they are covered! I should have argued a bit more but was feeling a little emotional from lack of sleep last night!

OP posts:
sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 17:53

Itsme he said they had someone in that could prescribe implying he couldn't, but that they would want to confirm with a doctor if they did as I'm pregnant

Aw shame I didn't see this earlier, walk-ins don't treat pregnant women and children under 2! At least they didn't where I lived.

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 17:59

They would see me random they just seemed very concerned about prescribing antibiotics to anyone pregnant!

I had bacterial tonsillitis when pregnant and the doctor wouldn't give me anything. Well, they would have, but they said it would be better if I could cope without them and I stupidly said yes! It was MISERABLE. It did go away after about 6 days only being able to take paracetamol was just horrid. I really sympathise OP! Make sure you throw away your toothbrush and hot wash your flannels, towels and bedding once it's gone to avoid reinfection.

Sunshinegirl82 · 30/04/2017 18:51

I'd call 111 instead and they should be able to get you an appointment with a GP. Do you have a temp? Sounds nasty! Hope you feel better soon.

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 18:53

Ah thanks Peach, I didn't think about that, will do that all when it's gone!

I'm going to see how I feel tomorrow and decide what to do. DH has been wonderful and got been to the pharmacy and picked up a few things and things like ice lollies! I have to say I'm quite enjoying this being looked after just not feeling rubbish!!

OP posts:
sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 18:56

Slightly raised temp but nothing extreme sunshine, good thinking with 111, to be honest I'm a bit ignorant with the difference. The walk in today said best to see my out of hours doctor if I could tomorrow as they would be more comfortable prescribing and have all my records, but they don't seem to have one from what I can see, maybe I'll try that, thanks!

111 will generally send you to an out of hours GP, usually at your local hospital. We've been a few times with ds. As you're pregnant they'll probably prioritise you, my experience has generally been quite positive. I'd take paracetamol regularly to keep the temp down.

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 19:12

Yes I've been taking paracetamol regularly, however have to stop now for a bit as will be over 8 in 24 hours, am trying Tyrozets, lozengers and nasal spray as recommended by pharmacy at the moment

OP posts:
Sunshinegirl82 · 30/04/2017 19:17

Fingers crossed they help and good luck with 111!

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 19:24

Thank you!

I heard on the radio that a pharmacist can test for bacterial tonsillitis AND prescribe antibiotics if it's positive. I was Shock as I had tonsillitis for the first time ever last year and I am 40+. got it again two months later. GP gave antibiotics first time after looking and doing a check list of symptoms. No swab. Next time i got a prescription over the phone. I would much rather have known for sure if it bacterial. Haven't had it in a year but could be worth going the pharmacist route to see if they can swab and prescribe.

tinyterrors · 30/04/2017 19:56

Definitely see the out of hours GP tomorrow. I had bacterial tonsillitis before Christmas and it was awful, by the time I got to see a GP I couldn't swallow unless I'd just had a numbing spray.

Some hcps don't like prescribing anything if you're pregnant and tell you to wait and see. Most antibiotics are perfectly safe in pregnancy.

sophr2017 · 30/04/2017 19:57

Thanks lozster, my DH spoke to the pharmacist for a while today and they didn't say that but it's definitely worth me asking! Thanks

Bugsylugs · 30/04/2017 19:58

Hope you get better sleep tonight. Not all bacterial tonsillitis needs antibiotics. Make sure you are getting plenty of fluid more than normal. If you are feeling worse OOH
