Can i just add something to all the good advice above? (i speak as an ex bra fitter)

When you find a bra which fits you, please don't assume that every other bra out there labeled at that size will suit/fit you too. It probably wont.

All brands of bra come up different. Freya, M&S, Bravisimo, Triumph, ect. Some companies come up big, some come up small.

Styles of bra will fit and suit you differently even within the same brand. balcony, plunge ect. Don't be afraid of going up or down a size away from your percieved 'perfect' one.

Just like shoes - you wouldn't slavishly buy five and a halves in every shop, and every style, hope for the best and then wonder why your feet hurt.

Don't be afraid to take arm-fulls of bras into a fitting room and have a damn good try on session if that's what it comes to.

Northernpowerhouse · 27/04/2017 08:13

Avoid M & S. Last year they measured my daughter as 38c. She is actually 34b! I was trying something on in the next changing room and felt like shouting out WHAT??!!

PollyPerky · 27/04/2017 08:16

Why not just measure yourself- properly- and take 6 bras into the fitting room and try on? There is no point dissing the shop assts. The bras are fine if you know how to fit yourself.

It's perfectly easy to measure yourself OP. Under bust- tightly- then lean forward (no bra on) and measure round the widest 'dangle'. The difference in inches is cup size.

So 30 under bust , 33 round boobs is a 30C and so on.

Take loads into the fitting room, fasten the bra on the last hook (loosest) and if it is slightly tight that's fine- the band will stretch with washing.

All your boob should be in the cup with no overspill- 4 boob look- the back should not ride up and the straps shouldn't slip off if they do the style isn't right- straps too far apart or back too big.

I used to always buy Bravissimo, but got fed up with the prices, so I buy my bras in M&S now and fit them, correctly, myself. Once you know how to, you can get your bras anywhere.

User2468 · 27/04/2017 08:18

M&S= 32B with rolls of fat under my arms (I have a BMI of 18, I have no fat!)
Real life: 28DD sexy lady.

DanceTheBlues · 27/04/2017 08:24

M&S measured me as a 36B. I'm a 32E!

Mrsknackered · 27/04/2017 08:27

At 16 years old m&s told me I was a 34DD. Bravissimo put me at 30E!

Alyosha · 27/04/2017 08:32

M&S said I was 34D, in reality, 30FF.

Although I can range between 30F - 30G in cup sizes depending on the style.

LuckyAmy1986 · 27/04/2017 08:34

I have cancelled. Just don't know what I am going to do now! I will wander round the shops and see if there is an independent one, failing that, try and measure myself!

My wife had bad experiences with M&S measuring service in the past. I suggested she go to Bravissimo as I'd read good things here. She was hesitant as she didn't think they sold anything in her size, but tried them in the end.

They were fantastic! They measured her as a 'C' so couldn't sell her anything, but checked the fitting of her existing M&S bra, advised her on what size to buy, and even encouraged her to return after buying something elsewhere so they could check the fit for her.

She wasn't a customer, and in fact they had just confirmed that she never could be a customer, but still gave her wonderful service for nothing. She is evangelical about recommending them to anyone who will listen now.

Peregrina · 27/04/2017 08:36

I went to them, and they were fine! Perhaps it depends on the fitter?

fuckwitery · 27/04/2017 08:39

I got a great measure from my house of Fraser op

G1ggleloop · 27/04/2017 08:42

Are you on fb? Search for the fairy boobmother. She'll fit you from a couple of photos in your best fitting bra. You can ok her you don't need to post them directly in the page. Can't recommend her enough. She really knows her stuff

Semaphorically · 27/04/2017 09:25

I think measuring yourself is the way to go. As Laiste says, different brands and styles vary so you will need a different size in different bras - measuring yourself gives you a starting point then you just need to try things on - take that size and -/+1 back and -/+1 cup into the fitting room in a style you know suits you (e.g. I only wear plunge, nothing else ever fits properly) and see what looks right.

I don't personally like bravissimo. I've been fitted there several times over the course of two pregnancies, and they always seem to end up putting me in a bra that gives me loads of back and underarm fat. I'm quite slim, there isn't a lot of fat to squish, so this is quite an achievement! These days I prefer the DIY approach.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/04/2017 09:29

They say something like 80% of women wear the wrong size bra. The UKs largest seller of bras is M&S. This is not a coincidence.

I tried on dozens of bras in M&S, Debenhams and from Figleaves and none of them were 'right' but I'm trying to lose weight so didn't really want to pay Bravissimo prices, but in desperation, thought 'sod it' and did. I got one fitted bra from bravissimo and got a couple more in the same style online for a little less.

The fitter took one look at me and brought perfectly fitting bras straight away. Service like that is so worth paying a little extra for and in reality, a D cup isn't that large in a lot of back sizes, so don't necesarily assume that they're not for you. What are your measurements using the method posted by Dino?

WineAndTiramisu · 27/04/2017 09:40

I've not been keen on bravissimo either, they put me in a bra that was smaller on the back, assured me it was the right size, but it was agony, only wore it a couple of times, had to give up...

GaelicSiog · 27/04/2017 09:42

Cancel! Don't do it to yourself! They will put you in a bra at least 2 sizes too big because they use a medieval measuring system.

GaelicSiog · 27/04/2017 09:44

peregrina it might feel fine, but it won't be the right size. Probably because you're used to not wearing the right size.

tabbymog · 27/04/2017 10:01

Another vote against M&S. They said I'm 42B when I'm actually 38DD, self-measured. I spend more on bras now, and keep an eye on online sales as I can't get out much. I bought an expensive 38DD from Figleaves as a trial and couldn't believe the difference, I think it's the first bra I've ever owned that really fitted. I've never looked back.

StarryIllusion · 27/04/2017 10:06

M&S are shit for that. I used Ann Summers for mine and they were great.

Rumplestaleskin · 27/04/2017 13:40

I used to work at M&S and one of the bra-fitters was adamant that she could gauge bra size by looking with 100% success rate. Obviously, I then challenged her to guess my size. Surprise surprise she quoted a size significantly too large in the back and a much smaller cup size. I decided to not have a proper fitting there.

In my experience, Bravissimo are much better but I have had the awful back/underarm fat conundrum too. I am going to try measuring myself in future, I think.
