To want to see my GP much sooner?

I've been having blood in my urine for two weeks now. It has got worse, and now every time I pass urine, it is bright red. No pain, no itching.

Saw Midwife yesterday, who tested my urine for obvious infections and it came back clear. The blood in urine part of the little strip thingy came back just about as positive as it could. Midwife says there isn't much the Maternity Team can do. She is a bit Hmm that there is no pain when passing urine.

Keep trying to ring GP reception for an appointment. Nope, nothing. Every morning I would wait and nothing would be available. Everything booked up. On Friday I did a self assessment form that you do on their website and it said if the GP wanted to see me, reception would ring within 24 hours. They didn't ring.

I called this afternoon to see what was going on. Receptionist said ''Oh, GP wants to see you. Can you make 23rd May?'' I enquired about a closer date and she said thats all that is available and to keep ringing in the mornings as something 'might' pop up.

I am so fed up. Yes, it probably isn't anything serious but it is alarming me. AIBU to want to see my GP much sooner?

For what it's worth, my GP Surgery was in the papers recently for being put under special measures.

That is terrible! At my Dr's you can ring at 8:15am and get an emergency 5 min appointment for that day. If you need a longer appointment you might have to wait a week or so. Maybe longer if you are picky about the day/time/which dr you see. My surgery would definitely see you sooner than 23rd May! Especially as you are pregnant. I would go to a walk in centre x

Thank you for the replies. Rang 111 who said '' if that's all they can offer, that's all you can take'' - in regards to 23rd May appointment, of which they came to the conclusion of after I had no other symptoms.

Bit more worried today as I have a constant full feeling and 0 appetite... Even with sickness earlier on I still ate.

I just want help Sad

Wall in centre have advised me not to come in if I'm expecting a referral/furthering testing which apparently is what I need, says the walk in admin.

Good luck Flowers

My midwife said utis in pregnancy can be linked to miscarriage. If that is what it you can't wait.

LostSight · 26/04/2017 06:43

"Your GP should refer you urgently to a specialist if any of the following apply:
you have visible blood in your urine and no pain, and tests show there is no infection"

This is from the NHS's own website. I'm a vet, not a doctor, but personally I would go to the doctor's and camp out until I was seen, or I would go to A&E.

Best of luck OP. Hope it's nothing serious, but you need to have it checked out.

MistyMinge · 26/04/2017 06:52

Sounds like my doctors. Our surgery has now reduced its opening hours to 4 days a week, 8.30am until 1.30 pm, due to doctor shortages apparently. They want us to trek to next town and use its sister surgery, which nobody can get an appointment at either Angry.

It's only going to get worse if we remain under Tory leadership.

Op good luck. It's really not acceptable to leave you that long.

BarbarianMum · 26/04/2017 06:53

Time for the "velvet bulldozer" approach- calm, polite but utterly firm. They will see you today and they will take your concerns seriously- insist on speaking to a GP (practice manager is best). And, when this is all sorted, change GP.

Shakey15000 · 26/04/2017 06:53

Good luck.

Our GP practice is exactly the same. Also we've gone from having a GP 5 days a week to 2. If they're available Hmm

CPtart · 26/04/2017 07:19

Tell reception you will go to out of hours later if you're not seen today. They won't want that.
However if they offer you an urgent appt which this is, you must take it, Never mind travelling to work at that time. This is more important.

Oblomov17 · 26/04/2017 07:30

What a mess!!

GibraltarRocks · 26/04/2017 08:25

Well I got another telephone triage. I'm not holding out much hope. They never ring back.

The receptionist saw on the system that I was asked to make an appointment. But because a difference GP is in today, that GP has to ask me herself. Hopefully this GP will be more sympathetic since she is a woman.

I asked to speak to the practise manager, apparently they aren't in today.

I said this has been going on for weeks and I'm very worried, I even said over the phone about bright red urine. Yet again, shoved off with a triage appointment.

I'm stunned by this. You poor thing. I'd go to A&E. The variance in care is astonishing.

Some surgeries are excellent of course, mine certainly is, but I feel awful for all those subjected to this poor care.

Much luck OP.

PeaFaceMcgee · 26/04/2017 09:39

Please go to the EPU. Urinary tract infections or kidney compromise are pregnancy related conditions.

PeaFaceMcgee · 26/04/2017 09:40

You should be reviewed by the obstetrician's team at EPU, who may consult with the renal team.

PeaFaceMcgee · 26/04/2017 09:43

By EPU - I also mean 'Day Assessment Unit's or whatever it's called in your area. If you're not sure, please call the main hospital number on the front of your maternity notes.

witwootoodleoo · 26/04/2017 09:48

As you're in London you can just walk in to the EPU at St Thomas's. No need to call in advance or get a referral. You can just rock up and they will see you. U wouldn't leave it any longer as it could be putting you and your baby at risk.

pringlecat · 26/04/2017 09:49

Walk in centres are pretty useless. Not the fault of people who work there; just have zero resources.

But rather than think your options are GP or A&E, don't forget about the urgent care centre (based in an A&E hospital, but not A&E).

The people at an urgent care centre aren't potentially in a life or death situation like A&E, so by joining the triage queue, you're not being precious. If you cannot see a doctor despite best efforts and you are concerned there is something urgently wrong but not life threatening, try the UCC.

Sallystyle · 26/04/2017 10:01

I wouldn't mess about. I would be going to A&E if you can't get seen today.

It's disgusting that you even have to think about going to A&E/ UC because a GP won't see you but it doesn't seem like you have much other choice.

I hope you get this dealt with today Thanks

Stormwhale · 26/04/2017 11:10

I would be going to a&e. Op you can't carry on like this, just go.

LineysRun · 26/04/2017 11:26

This is good advice from wit:

As you're in London you can just walk in to the EPU at St Thomas's. No need to call in advance or get a referral. You can just rock up and they will see you
