AIBU to think when you hear this at interview, your chances of getting the job are pretty slim.

I thought I did really well in my interview today but this is what the manager said at the end. Previously I've always been told I'd hear the next day and always been offered the job within 48 hours.

AIBU or am I thinking into it too much?

I'm feeling a bit deflated.

Maybe they have more interviews to do later in the week?

TeenAndTween · 25/04/2017 13:49

Surely it depends on whether they've got anyone else lined up for interview for the rest of the week?

Wouldn't assume, my current job was from a Friday to the following weds because they were interviewing an internal candidate on the Tuesday.

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 13:54

I think there was just one day of interviewing. It's for one position and not in a popular location. I doubt they had lots of interest.

We will see if they even bother to contact me.
Often when I've heard this I've heard nothing.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 25/04/2017 13:56

It may be that they won't have a chance to get together to discuss it after the interviews finish, so will need to get together again at some point before Friday to decide.

My DD was told this at her last interview - and got the job. So don't lose hope. Fingers crossed for you.

CryingShame · 25/04/2017 13:58

It might be that they're waiting to hear on references from you and other candidates. We can't offer a post without references.

user1469914265 · 25/04/2017 14:00

I'll often say something along those lines just to give myself a little more leeway incase something happens.

I often have every intention of telling someone the next day but time can often slip by, if I know for instance that the HR dept have a lot on their plate and might not be able to confirm with me immediately, or if I know I have other meetings the following day that might run over and give me less time to deal with a new hire.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:02

I think I'd have heard by now if I'd got it. I can tell really that I didn't. I will wait until Friday to see. If they've not rang by then I can move on.

OP posts:
Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:03

I was the first person interviewed. I think they had three more.

OP posts:
AprilShowers16 · 25/04/2017 14:03

In my experience they always say that they'll let you know by the end of the week. Then if you've got the job you usually hear that day or the next day. If you haven't you usually hear by the end of the week.

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:05

That's what I find April. They contact the successful person and then wait for them to confirm before letting the others down.

That's why I am sure I've not got it. Oh well, I shall see.

You are overthinking this. I have interviewed 100's of people and would never make a quick decision on an offer - I often had meetings after the completion of the interview process with everyone involved, before choosing a candidate. Putting together the details of a salary and benefits package can take a while and some companies have a complex sign off process to agree the details.

RyanStartedTheFire · 25/04/2017 14:09

I was told on Saturday at a job interview that I wouldn't hear til the next week - got an email yesterday to say I'd got the job.

RyanStartedTheFire · 25/04/2017 14:11

What time was the interview? They might not have even finished yet if they had three more to interview. I don't think it's a no because you haven't heard yet.

Liska · 25/04/2017 14:12

We say the same thing to everyone, even if one has given a terrible interview, and another is brilliant. It will be based on the day that we think we will actually decide by and offer the job, plus a couple of extra days in case they don't accept straight away/need time to think about it/turn it down and we need to offer it to someone else. Plus the time that it will take to actually write the letters.

So don't worry! They probably do just mean Friday.

wherethewildrosesgrow · 25/04/2017 14:18

I remember being in a similar situation myself, but they rang the next day and offered me the job, (subject to me passing relevant checks)telling me, when the checks came though, I had 48hrs to accept the position, I assume if I didn't pass the checks, then the job may have been offered to another candidate, maybe a similar thing?? good luck op, let us know how u get on

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:20

They sent the interview invite by letter so I hope the interview result isn't by letter too. That would be awful.

We will see.

It might seem like I'm overthinking but from my experience I've always been offered a job within 48 hours.

OP posts:
Badbadbunny · 25/04/2017 14:20

I was the first person interviewed. I think they had three more.

So how could they possibly have made a decision after only interviewing 1 out of 4 candidates? If you were the last of the 4, then they may well have known if you were more suitable than the other three. If you're the first, they havn't a clue whether you're the best fit or not.

Does it matter whether you're their first, second or third choice anyway. I'd suspect you'll hear quicker if you're the first choice, but if not, you may be second and may get the second chance offer if the first refuses. But, why would you care if you're first or second choice anyway - what matters is whether you get offered the job or not.

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:22

When I've been unsuccessful I've either never been called or called the next day too. They've not wasted any time letting me down.

A few times I've come second and had to wait much longer than the day they said.

OP posts:
Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:22

I don't care if I'm 4th choice if I got the job.

I'm just thinking I wasn't successful at all.

OP posts:
acquiescence · 25/04/2017 14:23

This is completely normal. Good luck OP.

RyanStartedTheFire · 25/04/2017 14:34

It's not been 48h yet has it? So no sign of whether you have/haven't got it? I wouldn't worry OP, you have no way of knowing.

amusedbush · 25/04/2017 14:37

Whenever I've been successful, the very latest I've heard is first thing the next morning. I always take it as a bad sign when I haven't heard within 24 hours.

FiftyShadesOfDuckEggBlue · 25/04/2017 14:38

Wouldn't read too much into this. It's a standard phrase. Even if you did well and were the preferred candidate the interviewers would have to discuss and reach a decision before contacting you anyway? Good luck!
