AIBU to think when you hear this at interview, your chances of getting the job are pretty slim.

I thought I did really well in my interview today but this is what the manager said at the end. Previously I've always been told I'd hear the next day and always been offered the job within 48 hours.

AIBU or am I thinking into it too much?

I'm feeling a bit deflated.

Thanks everyone. You're all very optimistic Grin

I do usually take it as a bad sign if I've not been contacted the next day. I've always been contacted quickly afterwards.

There's no point trying to guess though. I will just forget about it now. It's been done.

Nope, told exactly the same as you and got the job. So, good luck!

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:57

When did you hear polly?

FitnessFad · 25/04/2017 14:58

I don't understand why you are stressing because 'you are always contacted the next day'... wasn't the interview only this morning??
Of course you wouldn't have heard anything either way by now!

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 14:59

No it was yesterday at 10am.

I've done interviews before where they have been squeezed in in-between meetings and then it has been several days before the I and the rest of the panel have been able to get together to make a final decision, so I wouldn't assume anything yet.

RyanStartedTheFire · 25/04/2017 15:04

Your OP says your interview was today, hence why everyone is so confused!

Gummybear1989 · 25/04/2017 15:10

Ah I meant a YESTERDAY. Just realised now.

It could mean absolutely anything. Not everyone has time to schedule interviews for 2 days solid and spread them over a week instead, some people can't make up their mind and take forever to chose a candidate by that time s/he has already accepted another job, twit
people take annual leave, are busy. I wouldn't jump into any conclusions.

I don't know many companies who cancel interviews because they think they found the perfect candidate. So good luck!

Ragwort · 25/04/2017 15:15

You are seriously over thinking this - I get that for you the interview is the most important thing going on but, having been in HR for years - I might have been doing interviews plus many, many other tasks and it's just not always the top priority - and as others have said, it's good practice to wait a few days to think/discuss things.

I was chuffed to bits when I was recently offered a new job the same day as the interview - but only worked out later that I was the only one who actually applied for the job Grin.

Latenightreader · 25/04/2017 15:21

Last time I had an interview I was pleased with the way it had gone and kept my phone handy that day (Thursday) and the next. By lunchtime the following day I was convinced I hadn't got it so tried to put my disappointment behind me. On Sunday morning I received a phone call offering me the job - and was later told I was the first choice and the decision had been made on the day. No one is sure why it took them a while to ring me, but it is a mostly volunteer organisation, so the idea of working hours is a little skewed! First time I've ever accepted a job while in my pajamas.

Good luck!

PollytheDolly · 25/04/2017 15:34

When did you hear polly?

Thursday, the day before!

Elland · 25/04/2017 15:41

It took about 3 weeks for me to find out I had a job once! There could be any reason why you would find out later in the week, for example there could be 5 people being interviewed but 1 of those people are on holiday and can't come in for interview until Friday.

I used to work in recruitment and the above situation was a regular occurrence and managers would always try to accommodate a late interview where possible.

Instasista · 25/04/2017 15:44

I agree you're over thinking this OP. I interview loads and tell candidates at all different times depending on all sorts of factors. TBH, as horrible as it sounds sometimes it's also other things being higher priority

ThomasRichard · 25/04/2017 15:46

I'm the interviewer in this position now (not yours in particular!). I have 8 candidates, 4 positions. All candidates have been told that they will receive feedback once I've interviewed everyone. In practice, I've already given feedback to unsuccessful candidates because it's unfair to keep them waiting when it's a definite no. I'm still going to end up with more candidates I'd like to hire than I have positions available so at the end I need to look at my shortlist, work out where I would place people and make offers. If they haven't heard feedback straightaway it's a good thing!

hollyisalovelyname · 25/04/2017 15:46

You are the first of four to be interviewed.
They need to meet the other candidates.
I hope patience isn't a necessity for the job Wink
Best of Luck.

UppityHumpty · 25/04/2017 16:14

Depends on the company. I got offered the job 4 weeks after an interview once & I was first choice for it too lol

maggiethemagpie · 25/04/2017 18:46

I am in the same position OP. actually worse - I interviewed on Thursday was told I'd hear 'early next week' and it's now the end of Tuesday and no sign. I too think you usually hear within 1-2 days if successful - the operative word being usually.

Hopelessromantic1988 · 25/04/2017 19:11

If I don't hear tomorrow I will presume I've not got the job. I have a feeling I didn't anyway. Unless their first and second choice reject the position.

Hopelessromantic1988 · 25/04/2017 19:12

Ah didn't realise my first message didn't send.

I too am in the same position. I interviewed Friday.

We will let you know by the end of the week usually means you didn't get the job.

Ecureuil · 25/04/2017 19:16

We will let you know by the end of the week usually means you didn't get the job

I have done a lot of interviewing in my time. We tell everyone exactly the same thing, so it would be impossible to second guess from what I said with regards to when they'd hear whether they were successful or not.
Often we make a decision within 24 hours, sometimes the hiring committee can't get together for another few days/a week and therefore we can't make a decision until then. Sometimes I need to finalise some details with HR before making an offer, which can take a day or two.
I usually let the candidates who are definitely unsuccessful know first.

wherethewildrosesgrow · 30/04/2017 22:51

did u get the job op ?

hollyisalovelyname · 01/05/2017 12:20

OP hoping it's good news.
