About ds birthday cake? Warning totally trivial

It's ds 9th birthday in a few days.

He didn't have a party but we took a few friends to Go Ape and for pizza at the weekend. We are also going to a theme park this bank holiday weekend for his birthday.

He'll be at school on his actual birthday so the evening will just be presents, a nice dinner of his choice at home, and family will be stopping by.

Now to the cake! He's been going on pretty much since his last birthday about having one of those supermarket character cakes, the ones that look really nice but don't taste that nice. Every time we go to the shops he looks at the cakes. Trouble is no one is going to eat it but him, no party bags to put it in and generally find visitors just don't want to eat them because let's face it they taste horrible.

I'm not good at baking so my idea was to either buy a nice chocolate cake or ask my mum to bake a Victoria sponge, that way we can still sing happy birthday then at least everyone can have a slice when they stop by.

I know it's trivial but I love birthdays and we have little traditions.

RTFT! The OP has already said numerous times now she's going to get her DS the cake he wants.

Jeez, this is going to be this year's Cancel The Cheque Grin

mygorgeousmilo · 24/04/2017 15:39

Just get him the ugly cake.

BeMorePanda · 24/04/2017 15:41

stop all this silliness right now - never turn down an opportunity to HAVE TWO CAKES!!!!

BeyondThePage · 24/04/2017 15:43

BeMorePanda - I thought exactly the same!

CaraSl · 24/04/2017 15:54

Get him the cake. I love the taste of supermarket birthday cakes more than homemade ones!

Iamastonished · 24/04/2017 16:13

Wash your mouth out CaraSl

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 25/04/2017 06:59

I want birthday cake now. Grin

FlapAttack78 · 25/04/2017 07:09

Buy the cake and accept his offer of sharing and eat it!.. bit of supet coloured icing and bog standard vanilla sponge can't be bad enough to turn down sharing cake on a birthday!!

nooka · 25/04/2017 07:15

I see the OP is going to buy the cake. I hope her ds is very pleased :)

Personally I'd be very reluctant, but if one of my children had been asking a long time I expect I'd buy it too. I wouldn't eat it though as I find shop bought cakes really unpleasant (I don't think they look that great either). Too sweet, dry and with a very odd taste that is probably the artificial vanilla flavouring. At most events I can get away with saying I don't have a sweet tooth and not offend, but would be a bit sad to have a cake at home that's (to me) not eatable.

I must just be a proper sugar junkie because I actually like those character cakes! I pick the icing off and eat the sponge and it usually tastes fine. Happy birthday to your son Smile Cake

UppityHumpty · 25/04/2017 09:56

Why are you inviting cake snobs to his birthday? Wasn't aware that kids/parents discriminated against types of cake - it's all equally bad for you. Shop bought cake is usually more calorie/sugar controlled.

Unpropergrammer · 25/04/2017 10:01

Can you buy him a character cake which he can take into school on his birthday and share with his class and then have the chocolate cake for your visitors?

rogueantimatter · 25/04/2017 10:08

I sympathise - I am very old fashioned when it comes to birthday cakes. Despite low standards with nearly everything else I pride myself on making a cake and not buying one.

Perhaps he could take a shop bought (bleurgh) cake in to school the day after his birthday to share with his class? And the family could have a homemade one on his birthday.

Ahh - cross posting? Apologies
