To think that the latest fashions in White Stuff are crap.

I may get flamed for this or at least given another biscuit: each to their own! Buy somewhere else, then Etc
I have been buying from them for several years and loved their designs.
I popped in yesterday although I need new clothes like a whole in the head and was appalled by the complete lack of anything in the shop I liked.
Has boho come back in and can that explain the number of tassels and fussy necklines?
Manager said that they were trying to attract more fashionable younger people, I retorted that I thought I did look fashionable or at least good in my older White. stuff clothing.
Maybe this links with this thread

Apparently White Stuff has a new buyer which explains some of the new stuff.
WS has been my go to shop for ages, so where will an early fifties lady go to instead? Please don't say M and S they have been crap for years

Hardly any cotton in White Stuff this year, all bloody viscose. I'd forgotten about Mistral since the local one closed. I'm going to hunt it down.

Fredmitten · 23/04/2017 19:20

Fat face had some nice stuff when I popped in yesterday. Always seems dear for what it is though.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 23/04/2017 19:44

I haven't come across Mistral before and just checked their website. Looks like they have inherited the White Stuff old buyer! Grin

Move over White Stuff and Mistral here I come although I still need more clothes like a whole in the head and really don't need that lovely skirt I just saw on Mistral

Never liked it, awful colours like mustard and real with dodgy patterns and unflattering shapes. Teen DD refuses to go there with me says it hurts her eyes. Fat face is better but I try to wait for their sales. M&S seems to have an obsession with putting embroidered flowers and butterflies on otherwise perfectly good tops and shirts.

Someone somewhere in retail needs to get a grip on this market. There's ladies with cash to spend and nowhere to spend it.

woodhill · 23/04/2017 19:56

I hate viscose, bring back cotton. Wish the manufacturers would get the message.

AnathemaPulsifer · 23/04/2017 20:01

Couldn't agree more. Viscose is awful.

AnathemaPulsifer · 23/04/2017 20:02

If ever there were a thread I'd be happy for the Daily Mail to pick up... BRING BACK OUR NATURAL FIBRES!!

zukiecat · 23/04/2017 20:06

I think there are some really lovely things on their website

I am very much into boho type clothing, and find it hard sometimes to get the styles I like

White Stuff is far too expensive for me though, I have an Asda/Primark budget

tactum · 23/04/2017 20:21

I agree it has REALLY gone downhill. I used to have to whittle my choices down according to my budget but literally can't think of the last time I bought anything there.

Agree with Mistral definitely. Also try the Mantarray brand at Debenhams' - they are fab.

SpeakerOfTheHouse · 26/04/2017 16:03

Another vote for Mistral - bought some jeans from them in Jan & they've washed and worn brilliantly.. Good quality stuff and cheaper than White Stuff too Smile

enidlives · 26/04/2017 16:07

I think white stuff has always been a mixed bag, loved them about 10 years ago but less so now even though I think they are as a brand maturing with me so no yanu!

PickAChew · 26/04/2017 16:17

I like white stuff colours, generally, but I'm not so keen on the fabrics. I've noticed that they're doing an awful lot of those shirt sewn into a jumper style things - I can't see how they would ever wash well.

Definitely have a look at seasalt and fatface (though they've not had anything I've really liked for a while) and also weird fish - I was beyond excited wen I spotted an outlet near us, the other week!

I find the cut of Mantaray stuff a bit odd - end up having to size up to fit my boobs and then the necklines are far too big.

I don't like monsoon at all. It's a sea of polyester.

PickAChew · 26/04/2017 16:23

I'm quite bemused by the size of the ruffles in the shops, this year. I've seen a couple of tops that look almost exactly like the frilly mothercare and ladybird dresses my sister was wearing as a baby in the early 80s!

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 26/04/2017 17:00

Being a fatty I find White Stuff's fit is flattering. Love the patterns too. Haven't seen Spring/Summer 17 stuff yet but sounds like I shouldn't get excited!

Try Laura Ashley, also flattering, also good patterns.

If you like your patterns funky, can recommend these guys in Brighton. www.getcutie.co.uk/home/index.html They do mail order too. Practically bespoke (you order by cup size and dress size) but as they use cotton (no give) best to check their sizing and maybe go up a dress size to be on the safe side.

scaryteacher · 26/04/2017 17:51

I use Lands End UK and East. The Lands End tops are great, as is their sleepwear, jeans. cashmere, and slippers. I also like East, especially their wrap tops. (I am 51 btw).

Sausagerollers · 26/04/2017 18:15

I moved on from White Stuff to HotSquash.
They do a good range of Jersey dresses in plain colours and print. I suffer from the sweats a bit too (oh the joys of womanhood) and their fabric helps with that. Not sure how, but it's like sportswear (doesn't feel nasty and synthetic though).
I used to like Hush, but their quality has gone down the toilet recently,so it looks good but falls apart after a couple of washes, and it's not like they're Primark prices either!

Cotton supplies globally are low compared to a decade ago. This is a trend seen for the last few years now. Lower yields and less acreage mean that textile companies are resorting to using more and more man made fibres, hence the horrid horrid clothes available these days!

woodhill · 26/04/2017 19:39

I'm wearing a Boden cotton top from 4/5 years ago which looks great, not lost its shape etc.
compared to a John Lewis plain top that was new this year, not cheap shrunk and misshapen. Quality has gone downhill generally in most shops.

woodhill · 26/04/2017 19:45

Mistral looks very similar to WS. Is it true to size?

HemanOrSheRa · 26/04/2017 20:11

Mistral looks very similar to WS. Is it true to size? That is what is was wondering woodhill. Mistral looks lovely. I just want some casual tops to throw on and look nice. I have big boobe and a tum and WS seemed to have a style of top that suited me, which they aren't doing anymore.

HemanOrSheRa · 26/04/2017 20:14

boobe??? BOOBS. I have big BOOBS. And a new phone which is as stupid as the last one Angry.

SpeakerOfTheHouse · 26/04/2017 20:28

Mistral has been, if anything, a bit generous in my opinion on size....
