I try to be organised and make sure my DD(3) doesn't get to the RAAAARRR HANGRY stage, but sometimes life intervenes or I miscalculate. Please, please share your top meals that can be prepared in minutes on the hob and/or microwave (heating the oven takes too long in this situation!) DD is in danger of turning orange from surfeit of beans/scrambled eggs/spaghetti hoops on toast!

Following, as the mother of a permanently hangry almost 2 year old.

Rainydayspending · 22/04/2017 21:08

Chop up carrots / apples/ cucumber/ cauliflower/ broccoli. Apply to child whilst thinking what the hell to feed them.

DesignedForLife · 22/04/2017 21:11

Spaghetti on toast with a fish finger or cheese

Fresh ravioli- 3 mins in a pan and you're done!

buckeejit · 22/04/2017 21:12

Super noodles here. Recent convert to cooking sausages & then freezing them-defrost with a couple of rolls on taekwondo morning when we're not home until after 6pm. Like pp I have an older one that will eat loads & then a 3 year old that just wants McDonalds constantly 🙄

isthistoonosy · 22/04/2017 21:18

raw potato no idea why but they both (2 and 3yrs) love it.

Any general salad stuff,
cold tinned; sweetcorn, mushrooms, tomatoes etc
dry cereal, nuts are a handy filler

And I've just realised I need to get much better at feeding my children actual meals Grin

Best to oil the mug first but not always necessary, spray cooking oil works well.

Put egg into mug, splash of milk and mix together. Add little grated cheese, cheddar or parmesan works well.
Microwave for around a minute. First time do it for 30 seconds and judge from there.
Turn cup upside down to release the egg thing.

Small appetites it works well with some veg on the side, or baked beans.

Put in an English muffin or bagel for hungover adults Grin

Get small pasta stars - just take a couple of minutes
Batch cook bolognese and freeze portions
Boiled egg and soldiers
Poached salmon and peas: salmon fillet & two tablespoons milk & dot of butter in dish covered by cling film. Pierce film and microwave x 3 minutes. Boil peas from frozen - but key is to use a frying pan with just a few cm water. Much quicker.
pseudo-risotto (adapted from annabel karmel) Boil rice night before. Sauté grated carrot and baby pomodoro tomatoes x 3-4 minutes. Grate some cheddar. Take off heat. Add cheddar and rice. Mix through. Cheese will melt in.
Toast with peanut butter and sliced banana
Toast with cooked roasted chicken made into a paste with philadeliphia and pineapple cottage cheese (recipe also from Annabel karmel)
Porridge.
Stir fry chicken veg & noodles
Chinese rice

Although you say that pasta takes too long to cook, have you tried Orzo pasta? Cooks in moments, and as it is shaped like rice, toddlers can eat it with a spoon.
Another quick idea are the pouches of ready made lentils and veg, I think JO does some, they are ready to eat in two minutes.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 22/04/2017 21:21

"Red Pasta"
Lierally just pasta, olive oil and tomato puree.
Cheese optional

lilyborderterrier · 22/04/2017 21:22

These are brilliant, I'm a terrible cook and am so bored of trying to think of new quick ideas.
Thank you x

Hobbitch · 22/04/2017 21:33

Avocado blended with cream cheese and some lemon juice (and a bit of salt if you use it). Just add some toast!

Polenta is also quick. Warm up some water and milk, add the polenta, stir until it thickens like porridge, add butter, cheese and nutmeg, season if needed - 5 min tops and it's delicious.

Huldra · 22/04/2017 21:35

Egg noodles, in boiling water. When it's just about cooked put a handfull of sweet corn and or peas until unfrozen.
When drained you can also put in cold chicken, ham, cold boiled egg, or whatever protein you have lurking cooked in the fridge.
Add soy if you want but be careful of salt.
Mine liked a sort of satay sauce stirred on. Peanut butter, garlic (I use lazy garlic), soy, honey in cup in the microwave.

Pasta, look at soup pasta if you want to be very quick. Again when just about done frozen veg into water. Drain, stir in cream cheese. Again you can add cooked meat if you have any or extra hard cheese.

Toasted sandwich. I do them in a dry frying pan but toaster bags are good, or those warburtons toastie pockets. Raw sliced veg and fruit on the side.

CheshireChat · 22/04/2017 21:37

isthistoonosy Please don't eat raw potato as it's not good for you (or your children obviously)! I believe they have solanine which can cause indigestion if I recall correctly.

Kanga59 · 22/04/2017 21:38

Thomas Tank pasta shapes and toast!

CheshireChat · 22/04/2017 21:40

This is why raw potatoes aren't great.

milliemolliemou · 22/04/2017 21:42

Cheese on toast - while grilling one side of bread grate cheese, add egg and mix.
Pour mixture on ungrilled side and add mustard to yours if you like.
Grill until puffed up and golden brown.. Serve with cut up cucumber/tomatoes etc. 7 minutes.

isthistoonosy · 22/04/2017 21:43

I don't let them eat much or often, we grow them ourselves (from our own seedling potatoes) so know they are totally organic, and OH has eaten them his whole life (as has everyone in his family) so I hope its OK.

Huldra · 22/04/2017 21:44

I too always thought that you shouldn't eat raw potato.

But mine did also get the whatever appears on the plate sometimes. Toast, cubed cheese, sliced cucumber, chopped banana, hommous, grapes, sweetcorn out of the can. A Pre-schooler ploughmans.

Scotinoz · 22/04/2017 21:44

I keep a supply of cheesy pasta (made by me 😀) in the freezer for this very purpose. Freezes beautifully and defrosts/heats in about 3 minutes, and I chuck some frozen peas alongside it in the microwave. Winner!

Huldra · 22/04/2017 21:46

Ahh Millie I've not tried egg mixed with cheese to make cheese on toast.

I have done cream cheese mixed with cheddar and mustard, that works too.

isthistoonosy · 22/04/2017 21:47

Thanks cheshire

SimplyPut · 22/04/2017 21:49

Boil tiny past shells (Conchigliette) for 7min, pop in a handful of frozen peas and cook for another 2 min. Drain and stir in a large tbs of Philadelphia.

CheshireChat · 22/04/2017 21:52

Also pasta cooked with some cream cheese/ creme fraiche with some ready cooked meat and raw veg like tomatoes and cucumbers etc.

Similar is pasta with yogurt, any meat, garlic, herbs and yogurt. Lovely and quick.

CheshireChat · 22/04/2017 21:54

Salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, boiled eggs and a tin a tuna thrown in. Maybe some salad cream or similar as a dressing.

Peppers make me gag so I avoid them, but you could use them and spoil a nice meal Wink.

NoSherryForMe · 22/04/2017 22:01

Thanks for all the fantastic suggestions - I'm feeling much more inspired! I do envy anyone whose toddler will happily eat salad, though. Grin
