To make DD have the underwear she wants for her birthday?

DD is 13 and wants this underwear that comes to £40 Shock for 2 sets. AIBU to make her get this for her birthday? I will buy her regular M&S, etc. when she needs it, but £40 is ridiculous.

13 is a milestone birthday so in this case I would.

TrollMummy · 21/04/2017 22:00

I have recently had an argument about this with DD who was trying to get me to buy CK or other branded underwear to rather than M&S underwear. In the end we left without buying anything. There's no way I'm paying £20 for pants so she can impress her mates on PE days.

BikeRunSki · 21/04/2017 22:03

Give her the cash of what the M&S equivalent would cost, and tell her to save up the rest.

KayTee87 · 21/04/2017 22:05

I don't think £20 for a set of underwear is expensive tbh. My sets are about £40-£50 each, but I have big boobs.

Italiangreyhound · 21/04/2017 22:06

YANBU, she can get it as a gift.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 21/04/2017 22:14

I second TKMax for CK underwear. You can get it for a fraction of the price.
Buying it as a birthday gift seems fine to me.

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 21/04/2017 22:15

When I looked in top shop I was sure it was sixty for the set. My dd asked for it for Xmas but I thought no way am.i spending 60. Where can you get kids for 20? I'd get her to buy it out birthday money. Funnily enough when I gave dd money and she had bday money from everyone else she didn't buy them.

KingsCross88 · 21/04/2017 22:23

£40 for two bras and two pairs of pants isn't expensive is it? It's her birthday, treat her.

Ameliablue · 21/04/2017 22:23

Wow, I've not got to that stage yet but yes I think getting it as a birthday gift is reasonable.

Starlight2345 · 21/04/2017 22:29

I don't have a DD but my DS (10) wears specific boxers on PE days. They aren't that price but I get it.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 21/04/2017 23:00

I can understand people saying they wouldn't if they couldn't afford it, but if you can then genuinely why wouldn't you? It's just such a difficult age for them with body confidence that if something that simple helps...

OhSoggyBiscuit · 21/04/2017 23:16

Maybe things have changed since I was at school, but I'm fairly sure that if I had stared at another girl long enough to notice what brand of knickers she had on when changing into my PE kit, I would be told in no uncertain terms to bog off.

I'm also fairly sure that nobody followed me down the hallway shouting TESCO KNICKERS! TESCO KNICKERS! in the hours that followed.

PaintingByNumbers · 21/04/2017 23:25

I can think of worse things to spend £40 on tbh, so if I could afford it, I'd just buy it. She's 13, nice to have a few matching sets of nice underwear, why not? If you can't afford it, thats a different thing, definitely not worth scrimping and saving.

Floofborksnootandboop · 21/04/2017 23:25

Girls around here where their CK bralettes like tops with nothing on over it...

kingfisherblue33 · 21/04/2017 23:28

Not in our town, floof!

ilovechoc1987 · 21/04/2017 23:30

Haha NO why should a 13 year old CHILD need to have expensive underwear??
I don't care what the 'In thing' is, but at 13 her underwear is for her, not for showing off.

Elizawh · 21/04/2017 23:34

Same sort of thing here too. I had a very lengthy argument conversation with my DD recently because she posted an Instagram picture wearing her pj shorts and her CK bra. It was very unlike her but apparently everyone does it so she has to now 🙄 Okay for lounging around the house, not okay to post pictures or leave the house like it.

Floofborksnootandboop · 21/04/2017 23:37

Guess it depends where you live kingfisherblue33, I personally think it's ridiculous, it's a bra not outerwear, but I see a lot of girls on Instagram too.

It's stupid of course but was just saying it as someone said something about other girls not looking at girls in their underwear.

loverlybunchofcoconuts · 21/04/2017 23:49

It's a shame that 13 year olds are that interested in expensive underwear , seems a bit'mature' for that age...- I don't remember anyone looking at anyone elses when we got changed for PE at that age - it was always cold and we just got changed fast!

MrsMcMoo · 21/04/2017 23:50

Omg, my kids underwear is 100% George at asda! No way would I countenance any of this designer bullshit!

Benedikte2 · 21/04/2017 23:57

OP I would give her £40 for her birthday and tell her to buy what she wants -- underwear or anything else. When it's her money and not yours she will think twice about spending it on this underwear. If she does buy the underwear you'll know she truly wanted it but it's more likely she'll ask you to get her the regular stuff so she can buy something "more exciting" with the £40

Dancergirl · 21/04/2017 23:57

Do the CK bras offer anything by way of proper support?

Goldfishjane · 21/04/2017 23:58

OP I know exactly what she means and my PE days are years behind me! I remember my mum being baffled by it but I saved pocket money to buy a better looking bra gfrom M&S!! I think it was £12 for a matching set in those days!!

But yes, she can pay.

HeddaGarbled · 21/04/2017 23:58

Aargh, I feel so sorry and angry for these young people. Now even their underwear is noticed and judged by their peers.

I'd go the birthday present route, I think. I'd love to say, don't bow to peer pressure but it's your daughter who will suffer, not you, for your/our principles and I do remember how awful it was to not have what other 13 year olds had.

haveacupoftea · 21/04/2017 23:59

podgebodge go on www.brastop.com! I'm 38K and can only wear low wires, they usually have something suitable for around the £18 mark.
