To be gutted we're not entitled to any financial help?

DeanaPiana · 21/04/2017 13:48

Myself and DH have a combined income of £46000.

I have done numerous calculators and apparently, I am not entitled to Child Tax Credits or Working Tax Credits when baby gets here.

A few sources have even said I shouldn't go for Child Benefit as it wouldn't be worth it in tax returns Shock

We didn't budget for a baby thinking we would get extra help to finance them etc, but I thought we were entitled to at least a little something and I have to say, I feel gutted. We live in a high cost area, London, and rent here too. We want to move out into a more rural/outer area in the next 2 years max but that just doesn't seem possible now. No way we can afford to save that much. We don't even have a lot of outgoings. Our rent is over 1K a month and that is considerablly cheap here.

Just doesn't seem fair at all Sad

And all those who are saying op should move away from London. how on earth would London function if everyone who earned less than 25k left London? Who would work in shops, who would be the cleaners, who would be the care workers, the health care assistants, the administrators?

cathf · 21/04/2017 16:29

Obsidian - I think you are projecting a little there. Grotesque?
Another post which proves my point. The middle income are fair game to be laughed at, mocked, talked about, sworn at etc.
But heaven forbid anyone does the same to lower earners.
Then it is grotesque, apparently

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 21/04/2017 16:30

HB/LHA, which they fuck up all the time

That's exactly why I'm struggling so much atm.

If there ever comes a day when I don't have to rely on the council/government not being wankers to survive, I'll throw a massive party and you can all come along Grin

I had to wait a month to get my P45 from my last employer (who is as much as a wanker as the council are) so my income dropped by £80 a week. My rent stayed the same.

Finally got my P45 to prove to the council I no longer work in my last job. Three weeks later the council get round to updating my HB claim and lo and behold, they still counted the £80 a week I no longer get in wages Hmm

Wankers. All of 'em. The government, local councils and employers who don't give a shit about their employees and whether they can afford to live.

It's not a lifestyle to aspire to, OP. Honest.

You get used to getting a certain amount, base your budget on it and then they snatch it away with zero notice and you are still expected to be grateful for your 'handout'

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 21/04/2017 16:31

Antihop, it's supply and demand, innit?

If more people left because of the frankly ridiculous prices, the prices would go down.

London won't be left without shop workers, cleaners or nurses. Their employers will just have to pay them properly and LL's will have to adjust their prices in line with reality.

AmberLin · 21/04/2017 16:37

^ this

They'd offer incentives. In house day care, more vouchers etc. As long as people are willing to work in central London for pittance, nothing will ever change will it? you do what's best for your kids, not overrated NHS bosses trying to staff their hospitals.

MadMags · 21/04/2017 16:42

OP how very dare you be confused about entitlements!

You're not allowed to ask a question if you earn more than £10 pa, don't you know!

Enjoy the contest of "I'm Poorer Than Everyone" that your post has sparked.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/04/2017 16:44

If the OP has £1000 left after rent and travel.

And the NHS nursery is £60 a day (£1200 a month)

Then frankly, she is fucked.

But serve her right, the grabby entitled baggage expecting to, you know, eat and stuff.Hmm

RortyCrankle · 21/04/2017 16:44

Where exactly do you think the money comes from to pay benefits? I will give you a clue. It's not the leprachauns sitting on their pots of gold, nor is it fucking fairies making £20 notes through the night. It comes from other people working and paying taxes and your income being what it is, I think you have a damn cheek to expect other people to pay for your child.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 21/04/2017 16:44

So OP and her DH work and get paid, no doubt worked hard at school to gain qualifications to make their life easier in the future?

How dare you assume that Usernumbernine or any others on this thread haven't worked hard?

I have worked hard at school, have numerous qualifications, but due to poor health at the moment I can't work. I'm a single parent, living in extortionate rented accommodation, on benefits struggling to get by. I can't move somewhere cheaper because I can't move my children hundreds of miles away from their father.

I do realise that you have said your OP sounds thoughtless, but honestly, you don't know how lucky you are. There are two of you to look after your child, and a decent wage between you. I'd swap my lot for that in a heartbeat.

MadMags · 21/04/2017 16:46

Rorty I do hope you've told people one benefits that they don't deserve anyone funding their children.

FlyAwayPeter · 21/04/2017 16:48

It comes from other people working and paying taxes

Problem is, we need a lot more "people" or rather Amazon, and Google, and Starbucks and whoever else you like to pay their fair share.

We are a rich country. We shouldn't have to have these arguments, if taxation were fair and applied to all those corporates & super-rich who can lawyer their way out of paying for the resources this country's taxes pay for (police, clean streets, orderly civic society, well-educated & healthy workforce etc etc etc).

These are all important public good things, and we should be demanding of our government to make sure they are preserved. NOt by charging the workers more, but by properly taxing the corporations who profit from us.

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 21/04/2017 16:49

She will get some help towards childcare. And also child benefit.

She didn't start a thread about not being able to afford childcare. She started a thread about the unfairness of her getting any government to save towards her dream life in the countryside and pay for child care.

Which is crass.

Obsidian77 · 21/04/2017 16:52

I'm not projecting cathf, I'm specifically commenting on your posts on this thread. I make no wider judgement about income earners of any level.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 21/04/2017 16:57

I'm also a bit surprised that you won't qualify for any tax credits or anything other than child benefit op.

£23,000 pa is less than the UK average income, isn't it?

Perhaps I'm not up to date with all the cuts the Tory Government has made.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/04/2017 16:59

This is just like that story isn't it, about the rich guy in the cafe helping himself to nine tenths of the pie and everyone else bickering and fighting over the crumbs?

People are being angry and jealous and spiteful at the wrong target here. Of course a young working couple in one of the richest cities in the world should be able to afford a child and a holiday and to save up to buy a home. The world has gone fucking crazy when those kind of aims are considered entitled.

And all those competitively hard done by folk. Get over yourselves. It's not the OP's fault you ate disabled or a single parent. And it's not her fault you are poor either. She is paying her fucking taxes for you. Which is a damn sight more than the fat cats are doing.

gamerchick · 21/04/2017 17:04

fab post tinkly Grin

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 21/04/2017 17:06

And if OP started a thread about unfairness of not being able to afford those things when she and her partner work f/t she would have gotten sympathy.

She didn't. She started a thread about it being unfair that she wouldn't get any extra help from the government. The extra help should come from her employer and her husbands employer. Her LL should charge a normal fucking rent. That those things don't happen is unfair.

That she'll have to wait until her child is in full time school to be able to save for her dream home is just life, I'm afraid. She should not receive government assistance to fund her dream of living in the country.

haveacupoftea · 21/04/2017 17:11

rorty don't be a dick. The OP works full time and pays plenty in tax and NI.

OP take a look at the tax credits calculator. For the time you're on maternity leave you only need to count £100 per week income and you're still classed as working full time. This may entitle you to some help during that time depending on DP s income.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 21/04/2017 17:15

Honestly, middle-income middle-class ought to become a protected characteristic - I can't think of any other sector of society which has to put up with so much bile, prejudice and nastiness and be expected to just take it.

Was this supposed to be funny?

NameChange199 · 21/04/2017 17:15

I'm on 24k including tax credits and my rent is over 1k a month. Plus a hefty nursery bill. And it's just me and my DD. Poor you op Hmm

noitsnotme · 21/04/2017 17:16

I don't understand some of the posts on here, which say people are entitled to anything, or only CB, etc. I earn approx 20k pre tax and get £50 CTC.

Thisusernameistaken How can you be on a little more than £23k and get less than £10k? What about CB?

usernumbernine · 21/04/2017 17:16

I pay my fucking taxes. Where does this notion come from that people on a poor salary don't pay tax?

LakieLady · 21/04/2017 17:17

Spare a thought for the families struggling on £350 benefits and having to pay their rent out of that. And that amount never goes up, no matter how many children you have.

I have a client who has £96 pw to pay her bills and feed and clothe herself and 3 kids after paying her rent.

Try that for size.

user1492781016 · 21/04/2017 17:18

sorry but you've got to be kidding!
That's a good income in my opinion me and my husband get under 20k between us and that is with little "help" count your self lucky.

MadMags · 21/04/2017 17:20

The competitive poverty is embarrassing.
