Apart from the DC (if you're lucky enough to have them) or something like doing all the laundry.

We hear of so many DHs on here who don't even make an effort on birthday's and Xmas that it makes you wonder if there are actually any that do bother.

What is the most special gift your DH has given you and what made it special? Was it the surprise or the thoughtfulness?

Or do gifts genuinely not matter at all to you?

My cat!

She is 9 and we got her together but DP paid all the expenses / vets bills / initial outlay.

MaidenMotherCrone · 20/04/2017 13:17

I prefer gifts that have been made, with love, just for me. I can buy things myself but if it's been made for me it's a winner.

DP made me an oak key ring, naturally heart shaped and engraved. It's just so beautiful in its simplicity. It means so much to me.

Maybe very outing, he was passing a wool shop in a town he rarely visits. Thought the colours and quality were nice and went in and chose 3 coordinating colours for me to make something for myself. Not a birthday or anything just spontaneous. I wear the said garment frequently.

Tickets to an event that I never, ever thought I would get to. And then let me give the other ticket to my sister, so she could join in the fun. I will love him forever for that.

My car! A lovely little smart car when i passed my driving test, I use it every day and its my freedom.

For our first Valentine's Day, he made me a folder to keep all my torn-out recipes in, with compartments for no fewer than ten separate categories and an index Grin. Ten years and 3 DC on, we barely notice Valentine's Day, but I use the folder at least weekly and it always makes me soften a bit.

For our first wedding anniversary (beginning of December) DH hand-made me an advent calendar with 25 little gold and silver boxes. Each one contained a chocolate, a little message from him with a memory of our first year of marriage, a wee gift (earrings, mini nail polish, lip balm etc) and a tiny wooden Christmas tree decoration that all hung from a little wooden tree. It was absolutely AMAZING.

Also my engagement ring which he had hand-designed and is utterly perfect.

A rechargeable DAB radio. I never left home without it when I first taught horticulture as I would listen to it whilst waiting for the kids to turn up/lunchbreaks/when cleaning out old greenhouses or gardens. It kept me sane.

Feeding the penguins at London Zoo. He now complains that he peaked too soon, as he'd need to get me an actual penguin to top it.

DH gives awesome presents. He really thinks about them.

My best was last year's birthday present - 2 hours horse riding and a new pair of jodphurs - I cried - apparently I'd mentioned my desire to start again a lot more than I realised! Also my 'peas in a pod' necklace.

And my eternity ring, which was a complete surprise.

Best gift was a trip to Ireland for my birthday. He booked the first 2 nights hotel and car hire for a week. So after the first 2 nights we did a road trip of Ireland which was just wonderful, spontaneous and fun!

Plus he proposed which was the icing on the cake, really!

Timeforteaplease · 20/04/2017 14:06

I think the surprise bit matters - anything that you have not had to nag and hint at for months or years.

My eternity ring was a complete surprise and I love it.

Surprise trip to Rome for my 40th. He's arranged childcare, booked my annual leave from work, the lot. All I had to do was pack.

I clearly have low standards. My favourite things are the vintage 80s Transformer (Astrotrain should any of you care) he bought be last Christmas. I loved Transformers as a kid and I have oft waxed lyrical about how much I loved particular one. I cried for about 30 minutes, I was so happy/grateful.

Also, when we were first dating he used to bring me Walnut Whips every time he saw me as we discussed on our first date how they were our favourite chocolate when we were children.

Lulooo · 20/04/2017 16:13

I think there's two gifts that really stand out. One is the ruby ring he gave me. He sourced the ruby from one country and bought the diamonds from another and had them set into a ring in another country. It was the thought and care and attention that went into it and that it pleased him so him to give it to me.
The other gift was in the early days of our marriage after I'd had DS and when we were pretty skint. I returned from hospital to find he'd made up the bed for me to rest in and under the pillow had hidden a box of Thorntons chocolates. It was the first time I'd had Thorntons and the box-all to myself- felt like such a luxury. It only cost him a few quid but I loved that gesture as it really felt that he'd bought it with so much love and thought.

4 beautiful glass angels for our Christmas tree from Italy, when he was on business there.

My initial three cats for my 21st, my first ever pets.

Crumbs1 · 20/04/2017 17:11

Mines quite good at presents. I'm lucky.
My eternity ring given when our first was born.
A beautiful Burmese ruby ring bought last Christmas and hidden inside a new set of saucepans.
Piano lessons and a piano.
My hot tub.

Three things spring to mind...

Lego movie 1980s style spaceship set because I loved Space Lego in the 80s.

Blue topaz and pearl ring.

Games Workshop Eagles from the Hobbit that he painted for me for my birthday. Love them, they're perfect Smile

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 20/04/2017 17:30

My beautiful engagement ring.
I was expecting our first baby and was very unwell. Saw a ring to replace my pretend ring -as he'd proposed unexpectedly on holiday- in an antique jewellers and fell in love with it. We went for a drink and he disappeared, came back with a little box in which was the ring, and said in his usual manner, "I hope this fits". It did, and perfectly.
The next day I collapsed and was taken into hospital. I wore the ring around my neck as drips etc meant my hands were very sore. Just looking at it made me feel less alone and scared. I was fine and so was our baby

Second treasure is the exquisite and very understated charm wrap he bought me for Christmas with our children's names engraved in tiny flat rose gold stars. Exactly to my taste. He actually forgot he'd bought it and ran downstairs saying "shit I knew I'd missed something"

My DH was 50 a couple of years ago, and I was going to book him a Land Rover experience day at a local stately home but we ended up going away and I mentioned it after to him in conversation. He knew that I'd only research something that I'd enjoy too so he booked it as a total surprise for my birthday the following year. It was such an amazing day, I loved loved loved the offroading and he said afterwards he was really proud of me Blush. The instructor was impressed too and let him have a drive as he'd just booked to be a passenger so he could share it with me.

It almost made up for the year he bought me a fishtank. I hate fish.

BlondeBecky1983 · 20/04/2017 17:38

My gorgeous OH made me a 10 minute photo/video montage documenting our relationship with 'our' song as the backing track. It had clearly taken him quite a while and it made me cry!

HirplesWithHaggis · 20/04/2017 17:41

The random bunches of daffodils dh picks up from the supermarket, because he knows I love them. :) (And they're cheap! Grin )
