To get annoyed with people not spelling my name correctly?

I have a fairly common name but one that is spelt two separate ways. Let's say it's Jayne instead of Jane.

People (mainly at work) INSIST on spelling it as Jane even when they receive emails from Jayne and signed Jayne. Even people I work really closely with who know full well how it's spelt. Like I'll go:

Dear xx

Please could I have Y document.

Kind regards,

Jayne

And get back:

Dear Jayne,

Please find attached etc etc

It's pissing me right off as that's not my bloody name!

I've got the opposite problem to the PP - again, assume Ann/Annie; I introduce myself as Annie but get called Ann and that's how it's written down. My actual name has a few different spellings so as long as they've written that name and not the shorter name, I'm fairly relaxed but hate it when they use the wrong name then just say "oh well, it's the same thing really" - err , no it isn't. If you're name is James, I'm not going to call you Jomes, am I?!

Mamabear14 · 18/04/2017 13:50

I'm a Clair. Mostly everyone, including family members put an 'e' on my name. It drives me insane! I've given up correcting them and quietly seethe now. I'm in my 30's so they've had long enough to get it by now!

ShotsFired · 18/04/2017 13:57

@GU24Mum If you're name is James, I'm not going to call you Jomes, am I?!

GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

That's really made me laugh and I don't even know why! I wish I worked with a Jomes so I could call him that all the time now!

silentsusie · 18/04/2017 14:23

Going completely against the grain here but I don't care how people spell my names. I have a first name which has 2 commonly used spellings and one more unusual spelling: mine is the unusual spelling, and a surname which has a very commonly used spelling but mine has a slight variation. Life's too short to worry about whether people get them right or wrong (unless it's an official document) and I doubt very much that those who misspell do it with any malicious intent.

CrazyPeoplePleaser · 18/04/2017 14:27

Whenever I save a person's number etcetera, I always ask how they spell their name before saving their details.

Oh and if their name is rather unusual, I'd always ask how to pronounce it and then check if I've pronounced it correctly. And I've noticed when you make those small efforts, it makes their day. Especially when you meet them again and have made an effort to be pronounce their name correctly, it does make people smile.

Plus, whenever I email a person, I always check their contact details to check if I've spelt their name correctly etc.

After all, it's the little things that count. But then again I am a crazy people pleaser Blush

EvaTheOptimist · 18/04/2017 17:27

My surname is also a girls name. So I can improve on your email exchange OP.

Dear xx

Please could I have Y document.

Kind regards,

Firstname

And get back:

Dear Surname,

Please find attached etc etc.

From people who KNOW me and KNOW that's not my name!!

It happens all the time.

Grrrr

emilybrontescorset · 18/04/2017 17:34

I also don't like people shortening my name when i introduce myself with my full name.
So say i was called Catherine and introduced myself as such I find it annoying for people who then say , well Cathy what do you think of xyz?.

bigtapdancingpimp · 18/04/2017 18:08

emily (see what I did there) are you a Nicola?

I work with a guy called Steve who insists on incorrectly lengthening my name (think Anne/Anne-Marie). I get my own back by shouting 'Oi Stuart/Sam/Stavros' etc. Or sometimes I leave him a note 'FAO Stephanie' Grin

emilybrontescorset · 18/04/2017 18:28

Bigtapdancing_ i like your style.
No I'm not a Nicola.

loaferloveforyou · 18/04/2017 18:34

Yeah it's pretty annoying. I could forgive once or twice but anymore than that and they get an eyeroll. Can't get too worked up about it though. If I can I misspell their name in return Wink

Incidentally, although my name is common no one ever gets the spelling right first time unless I tell someone the spelling or they see it written down. I get really suspicious if someone spells my name correctly first time Grin

happypoobum · 18/04/2017 18:37

I also have a name that can be spelt 576 ways.

I couldn't care less if people get it wrong. I had no idea I was so laid back Grin

Borntoflyinfirst · 18/04/2017 18:38

I'm the same. My name ends in i. More common spellings end in ie or y. Please note people replying to my emails or on fb or asking me to spell it that I mean i when I say i!!

Fiona1984 · 18/04/2017 18:40

I've had people get my name wrong even on an email, how is that even possible?

My partner gets annoyed when people get his name wrong. He'll tell them, then they'll add a letter in which makes it sound different. Happens a lot.

Mollie85 · 18/04/2017 18:41

I'm a Kirsty, autocorrects to Kristy. On the phone people think I'm saying Cathy...

I can't win Grin

Fucktifyno · 18/04/2017 18:42

I get this exact thing and it pisses me off so much, it is really rude.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 18/04/2017 18:47

I feel your pain.
I've had a year of sending out emails signed Joanne and getting replies to Joanna.
Half the company call me Joanna.
Apart from one woman who calls me JennyConfused

smilingsarahb · 18/04/2017 18:47

Sara, shara, sarha. ..It doesn't annoying me. It does surprise me. It was the most popular name of my generation..its not that difficult.

Dixiestamp · 18/04/2017 18:51

Absolutely! I was really chuffed today to have a letter published in Reader's digest-but they've spelt my flipping name wrongly. So annoying!

verytiredmummy1 · 18/04/2017 22:27

I have an extremely common name, spelt in the traditional (only) way and I still get people asking me how I spell it!

Tiredbutfuckingfine · 18/04/2017 22:38

I love when people point out my name is spelled wrong. At work. It's on my email and it is actually my email address!
-Hi tired, is that how you spell "tired"
Yes it is
-Because it's wrong! Did you know your email address is wrong?
No that's the way I spell it
-Oh but I thought it was a mistake! Because that's not how you spell it!
Srsly what are the chances of someone's email address being the wrong spelling of their name? And if it was, that you would just spell your name wrong in your signature as well

ProudAS · 18/04/2017 22:41

YANBU - most 6 year olds can copy a short word correctly. What excuse do adults have???

jmh740 · 18/04/2017 23:58

One of my closest friends has been with their partner 5 years and I still can't spell their name i always feel awful about it and have to type it a few times on a text before I send it and I'm still never sure if I've got it right

DuoTwo · 19/04/2017 00:14

I get this all the time too but it doesn't bother me at all. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I literally don't care. I don't think it matters unless someone was doing it deliberately to be unkind.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 19/04/2017 00:23

My surname is spelt incorrectly so often that I'm actually starting to prefer the wrong version.

EvansOvalPies · 19/04/2017 11:36

I have a saved list of everyone's names on my PC, just to make sure I spell their names correctly. Even down to the people who have children, but those children are referred to by a nickname (eg, Elizabeth becomes Buffy, Ruth becomes Ruby, Margaret becomes Daisy, etc, etc). It is not a difficult task, really. That leads on to people writing Christmas cards: To Evans and family. (With Evans incorrectly spelled). I say to that, shove your bloody Christmas card up your arse, you can't spell my name correctly, you can't be bothered to name DP or our two (adult) children, whom you have known all their lives.

Also, further to my post above regarding me sending emails to people signing off with my name, my email address contains my name, correctly spelled, as someone else has just said. So, the person sending me an email has to type my name, then addresses me within the body of the msg with my name spelled incorrectly. These people who have known me for over 30 yrs (I went to school with some of them) Gahh!
