Overheard in the Waitrose cafe

At the table next to me, four women. As I was right next to them I couldn't help, but overhear their conversation which went along the lines of...

Mother's shouldn't work until their children are school age leave home and those that do are either career obsessed bitches or married a poor man.....

Then they went onto seemingly contradict themselves by then talking about how childless people shouldn't be allowed jobs that are home based and only parents should be able to apply for those jobs so they can also look after their children......

Which then evolved into how children should be the centre of their mother's universe and when at home with them women should concentrate fully on their children and nothing else.

Women like that should be legally obliged to speak quietly in cafes so their shite isn't overheard by everyone else in society.
Oi less of the misogyny thank you. How about 'arseholes like that', thus covering males too? Wink

Andrewofgg · 17/04/2017 21:30

Who knew? Being pig-ignorant is equal opps. Anyone can do it regardless of age or sex or where you do your shopping.

Judydreamsofhorses · 17/04/2017 21:30

I'd fear you may have overheard my mother, except we don't have a Waitrose here. (She can also be heard holding court on immigrants and people on benefits, but god forbid anyone takes her free bus pass or winter fuel payment.)

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 17/04/2017 21:33

They were having tea/coffee without their children in sight?

Already lost credibility.

zeezeek · 17/04/2017 21:37

I said Waitrose cafe because I happened to be in Waitrose at the time. If I'd been inTesco I'd have said Tesco cafe.

I didn't see any kids with them. They just looked normal women so not the yummy mummy type, whatever that is anyway.

I wasn't offended or anything, just a bit bemused and thought the contradictions were funny. The whole thing about only parents being allowed to get a home based job is something I've heard quite a lot among some of the women at my kids' school though.

But but...why do they care about home based jobs? They have children somewhere! {Clutches pearls}

Andrewofgg · 17/04/2017 21:43

Interesting. I am old enough to remember when women as well as men seriously argued that men should be paid more for the same job as women and that men with families should be preferred for promotion because they needed the money. This is a variation on that theme, isn't it?

WhooooAmI24601 · 17/04/2017 21:46

Apologies for the misogyny SlightlyPeturbed I shall sit in the corner and have a think about my behaviour! Wink

Instasista · 17/04/2017 21:48

Waitrose cafe surely just full
Of pensioners? Nothing wrong with pensioners but hardly a mixed bag there! Don't worry. Who cares what Waitrose shopping pensioners think? Would you care if they were Morrisons or Sainsbury's pensioners?

OhHolyFuck · 17/04/2017 21:49

Ah, you met my mother then....

Daydream007 · 17/04/2017 21:49

They sound bitter with their lot, bless em! I pity their children!

Instasista · 17/04/2017 21:50

Actually I know why not Tesco or Morrison cafe. They don't give free drinks and Waitrose do. SCRONGERS

zeezeek · 17/04/2017 21:53

Insta - the coffee in my Waitrose cafe is so bloody crap that I wouldn't pay for it! Tesco one is much nicer.

Definitely did not see any free range kids floating about in the supermarket so no idea where they stashed theirs.

Our Waitrose doesn't have a cafe. It has a - wait for it - "Grazing Area".
Yes, indeed, as confirmed by the manager. You buy food from the shop and then sit and eat it. Everyone calls it the cafe though - but if you want to call it the grazing area those two words have to be heavily ironic and must have audible quotation marks Grin

Anyhow, back to the thread.....

FairNotFair · 17/04/2017 21:59

I knew a woman who believed that, yes of course women should have equal opportunities in the workplace... unless their job was needed by a man with a family to support. Then he should get it. Naturally.

JojoLapin · 17/04/2017 22:13

YABU for taking notice of such idiocy, be it in Waitrose's cafe or not. "WFH so that you get to look after the children at the same time"... Confused When I WFH, I actually work (hard) and there is no way I could focus on the kids at the same time.

zeezeek · 17/04/2017 22:15

I work from home sometimes too and no way could I do it if the kids were there. In fact I've found I work from home much less now I have them compared to what I did before.....

OP posts:
zeezeek · 17/04/2017 22:16

Fair not fair - that was probably the next part of their conversation....

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 17/04/2017 22:17

It's rude to eavesdrop on other peoples conversations.

sparechange · 17/04/2017 22:19

The misogynist party at the last general election had many of those points in their manifesto - and also the 'women should only be allowed a job if it doesn't deprive a man of a job' trope

It makes for interesting reading until you remind yourself that people with these ideas actually exist in the world

VladmirsPoutine · 17/04/2017 22:21

I fear MN may just eat itself with this thread Confused

Andrewofgg · 17/04/2017 22:25

sparechange Would that be the Christian People's Alliance or some such name?

Pure curiosity - I'm not going to support them with money or my vote Grin

sparechange · 17/04/2017 22:29

No, it was called something like 'The Party for Men and boys (and women who support them)'

The bloke who founded it did a few press interviews in the run up to the election and was frothing with bitterness from some failed relationships

He also wanted to cut all funding to encourage girls into STEM

It was very eye-opening stuff. He was INSANE

zeezeek · 17/04/2017 22:34

You mean it's real?

Fuck.
