To take dd to a and e?

She is 16 months and tripped over yesterday lunchtime. Since then she won't weight bear on one foot at all. She can't walk and can't even crawl.

The foot isn't swollen or bruised and I can touch it and move it without her crying.
She's had calpol and slept ok but still can't weight bear.

A and e or wait it out another day?

I was going to say take her to minor injuries not A&E but I see that's what you've already done x
Hope she's okay x

Minor injuries have booked her a follow up on Wednesday as they've got to get the ok from paediatrics at the main hospital to X-ray. The nurse didn't think it was broken but said it is bruised and a bit swollen. She said it's rare for toddlers to break anything because their bones are so bendy but I'm not sure that it true!
If anything is broken she thinks it is dd's toe and she said they wouldn't do anything for that anyway. So it's just wait and see

Minor injuries X-ray was closed yesterday which is why we didn't take her - although they haven't X-rayed yet anyway - and the wait at a and e was over four hours. If she'd been in pain all the time or really upset we'd have taken her of course but she seems fine until she tries to weight bear. She's been crawling since we got back this morning so at least can get around a bit but she keeps trying to stand and falling over so I'm worried she's going to hurt herself more!

As a result I didn't eat a thing for the whole 4 day stay. I didn't want to make a fuss when everyone was upset

You know more than a trained health care professional who works doing exactly such things every day? Hmm
She's right, obviously.

NabobsFromNobHill · 17/04/2017 12:04

Sorry fail on the c and p, should have said

Supermagicsmile · 17/04/2017 12:06

Hope she feels better soon.

Placeanditspatrons · 17/04/2017 12:12

Yes Nabobs I don't think it's 'rare' given the amount of posters who have had similar with their dc and even myself as a toddler broke a bone!

Anecdotes are not data.

SoupDragon · 17/04/2017 12:32

Unhelpful snidely comments are always snidely and unhelpful though.

Hear hear

It sounds like the person you saw wasn't particularly experienced with dealing with possible fractures in their age group. Assuming she's been walking for a while you really need to take her to A&E if she won't weight bear.

Placeanditspatrons · 17/04/2017 12:44

She's been walking well for about a month, had stopped crawling altogether and walks for miles usually when we are out.

I guess I will see how she goes and take her back for the x ray on Wednesday unless she seems worse in between. Her toe does look bruised and swollen now so if it her toe they won't do anything anyway. I've given her some painkiller. She seems ok, just fed up that she can't walk around.

welshweasel · 17/04/2017 12:48

Sorry I missed the bit about the toe. If it's definitely the toe rather than the shin that's painful then sounds very reasonable!

3boys3dogshelp · 17/04/2017 12:52

Place see how she gets on but minor injuries are not always the best place for young children. I have 2 friends who had fractures missed at minor injuries. My ds (3 at the time) was very sore and struggling to weight bear after preschool (no known accident). Went to minor injuries twice over a few days, he said his knee was sore, they examined his knee, said he was fine. In desperation after a week of him being the same, crying in pain walking etc, I went to a and e.
A and e dr took one look and called an orthopaedics dr to have a look. He manipulated ds's hip and he almost hit the roof! Apparently hip pain very often causes referred knee pain. He had an X-ray on his hip and had to stay in for it antibiotics Sad.
Minor injuries are great but there are no doctors there now so I only use them for very minor things now.

Just to reiterate when I said my son had 3 x greenstick fractures, I did mean 'bent' bones, not broken in half bones if that makes sense .. bent bones are common in toddlers

fingers crossed all is well by Weds

Yes Nabobs you are right. I'm a dreadful useless parent and I don't know what I'm doing. You're correct.

My daughter had a broken arm for 4 days.
She fell ever so slightly on it.
She cried and a I kissed it better - then she was fine.
4 days later I was getting her dressed and noticed when I touched a specific place she moved it and did not want it to be touched but was still using it.
Went to a&e and she was pushing a wheelchair around and waving with it.
It was broken ( properly not greenstick ).
She was 2.

Placeanditspatrons · 17/04/2017 14:14

I take her back tomorrow I think if she seems no better because she is crying a lot more than usual and also doesn't want to eat. She was ok but this afternoon she's woken up from her nap not at all happy.

That's rather hard on yourself, but whatever. Isn't there somehting between you being the worst ever and knowing better than the people with lots of training and experience? Are you always so dramatically extreme?

Booboostwo · 17/04/2017 14:16

Hope it's just a sprain.

My DD fell over on her bottom at 14mo and would not weight bear. A&E doc said just a sprain, toddlers do not break their bones so easily. Three days later second doc said the same. Ten days later she was admitted for exams, all clear, eventually we insisted on an X-ray...and she's had a fracture. She had no problems with the cast and even walked with it on.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 17/04/2017 14:23

You didn't go to A&E because the wait was over 4 hours??
So your child could have a fracture but your time is too precious to get her treated asap? Hmm

Placeanditspatrons · 17/04/2017 14:28

Yes Cherie as I said I'm a dreadful parent

Are you always so irritating Nabobs ?

SugarBlossom92 · 17/04/2017 14:28

My son broke a bone in his foot when he was 5 we took him to hospital and they done an xray but they did not give any treatment, no cast or anything they just said it would heal itself within a few weeks.

Placeanditspatrons · 17/04/2017 14:29

I actually didn't want to make her sit for 4 hours plus in a and e if I could avoid it. it wasn't my time that mattered. It was that I knew she'd be pretty distressed by a four hour sit in in a and e
