Weird things that scared you as a child...

My DD is 12 and I was just absentmindedly singing "Frere Jacques" and she said "Oh that song! It used to give me nightmares!"

And I said why? I used to sing it to you all the time!

And she said YES! And it made me think of people drowning...

Apparently she used to hear it and envision a man in bed and then water would rush in and drown him!

What weird fears/thoughts did you or yours have?

Gonzo from The Muppets. His nose used to freak me out!

ProfYaffle · 17/04/2017 14:57

Crikey that makes me feel old GreenFingers, the Judderman influenced my drinking habits in my 20s! Grin (and it was Metz, not Smirnoff Ice)

Yy to hearing your own pulse, I used to think it was tiny men marching in my head.

livelyredjellybean · 17/04/2017 15:07

Julian Clary; I had a nightmare of him chasing me round my school with a knife trying to murder me.
Also The Wizard of Oz; again a nightmare but this time the witch captured my nan in a block of ice.

Its only this year as I am about to turn 30 that I have managed to watch either on tv!

Creepy old fashioned book illustrations in Alice in Wonderland.

Ditto Edward Scissorhands.

The Moomins.

motheroftwojedi · 17/04/2017 16:30

Playmobil figures.

I had a recurring nightmare that they would put poison on the soles of my feet and then men in puddles would know to pull me down into the puddles to drown me. I recovered from my fear of puddles, still don't like playmobile and am phobic of people touching my feet.

Beeziekn33ze · 17/04/2017 19:04

Dr Who has a lot to answer for!
Zafod - that Bergerac faceless monk episode got me. Then we went to Jersey and I couldn't enjoy the lavender farm as much as I should have done!

DiscoSloth · 17/04/2017 19:10

Morph's little grey friend, Chas. I used to hide behind the sofa when he came on halfway through Tony Hart.

YouOKHun · 17/04/2017 19:31

I remember when my Dad's Morris Oxford got stuck in the mud; the sound of whirring wheels as the car sunk deeper - bloody terrified my 5 year old self. I still feel freaked out by that now.

Zafodbeeblbrox10 · 17/04/2017 19:48

breezie - lol..I didn't have to put up with jersey, but I didn't enjoy being alone in the house, and wasn't looking out of the windows for a while!

CheeseQueen · 17/04/2017 20:30

Return To Oz. All of it. The screaming heads, the Wheelies, the chicken and the falling egg....

Feargalthecat · 17/04/2017 21:32

There was a programme in maybe the late 70's or early 80's called Quatermass I think. I don't think I actually watched it but I could hear it from my bedroom and there was a chant the characters repeated saying something like "ley, ley, ley".

I can still recall the foreboding feeling it gave me.

Similar feeling too to the Tales of the Unexpected theme and Secret Army.

sk1pper · 17/04/2017 21:58

CherryBlossomPink · 17/04/2017 22:16

I was terrified that the Great fire of London would happen in my street after we learned about it in school, and how it passed from house to house. I was also terrified that when the road was dug up I would be trapped on the wrong side away from the rest of my family - they were laying cables of some form in our street for what felt like years (never occurred to me that the channel they dug was less than a foot wide!)

BrandMombie · 17/04/2017 22:23

I used to believe 100% that there was an old mans dead body under my bed, as a child (maybe 7/8 years old). I went to bed everynight worrying that he would come back to live, and grab me! The worse part - I didn't tell anyone I suspected a dead body in the house (even though there wasn't). I have no idea when, or why, but I hand on heart believed it! I'm not sure how I managed to go to sleep every night.. Blush

YolandiFuckinVisser · 17/04/2017 22:30

We had a painting by my grandad on the stairs, it was a man in a Russian hat seated in a grand chair, arm resting on the arm of the chair with 3 fingers raised on a relaxed fist. It was done in oils all in shades of green. I had to close my eyes when passing it on my way up or down the stairs. I'd love to see it now, no idea what happened to it.

MulderitsmeX · 17/04/2017 22:32
