Weird things that scared you as a child...

My DD is 12 and I was just absentmindedly singing "Frere Jacques" and she said "Oh that song! It used to give me nightmares!"

And I said why? I used to sing it to you all the time!

And she said YES! And it made me think of people drowning...

Apparently she used to hear it and envision a man in bed and then water would rush in and drown him!

What weird fears/thoughts did you or yours have?

The basilisk in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Especially in the Steven Fry audiobook where it has this horrible, hissy, echoey voice that Harry hears as it moves around Hogwarts in the pipes. Extended to a fear of bathrooms, especially with exposed pipework, flushing the toilet in case I somehow summoned it etc. Thought I was thoroughly past this but we've had a leak under our bath and had to break the panel trying to get to it and haven't replaced it yet. I HATE going to the loo at night and looking at the dark space underneath the bath with exposed pipes Confused.

The Paisley printed eiderdown on my bed :(
The pattern looked like anguished faces to me, a bit like the face in The Scream.
It was on my bed for about 6-7 years at least. I was massively delighted when 'continental quilts' came in.

I remember a childrens TV programme about a house that had hidden rooms, and a skeleton was found in one. It literally freaked me out for months after and my poor dad had to spend many an hour tapping walls to prove there were no secret doors in our house Grin.
I also remember the song "in the summertime" and it used to completely freak me out to the point I'd hide and be hyperventilating. I have no clue why...................
My sister was terrified of the Doctor Who theme tune and I am ashamed that I used to turn the TV up to full volume when it came on...........

An episode of the simpsons which parodies The Raven.
A book about a man who played the spoons on his knee
Guy Fawkes
I was a very wimpy child but these ones jumped to mind. I'm sure there are many others!

I used to love Mary Poppins but was terrified by the scene in the bank. SO my parents always had to fast forward through it

StinkyMcgrinky · 16/04/2017 21:44

The X-Files and Strange but True theme tunes. I would lay in bed while my parents watched them with two pillows over my ears to try and block it out Blush

Car wash machines 😯😯😯

dudsville · 16/04/2017 21:51

Anything that I thought a sinister thing could peer through. Our internal doors had Skelton key locks and I used to hate that, and doors slightly ajar, and under bed spaces, and one place had huge black cast iron grates for central heating. All peerable!

FlapAttack78 · 16/04/2017 21:52

I also thought the Blair witch project was real footage haha! So so so terrifed

Booshbeesh · 16/04/2017 21:53

Empty cotton reels. I used to have a dream atleast 4 times a week these cotton reels were rolling after me. There were huge. Massive. I was tiny and never escaped unless i woke. I still have the dream sometimes. Although when i wake i dont cry, i do however find it hard to get back to sleep.. the cotton wad finished the reels were enppty... ugh

SarcasmMode · 16/04/2017 21:56

Head from Art Attack!

Still don't like it...

Greenfingeredfun · 16/04/2017 21:58

I hated the in the summer time song too. It was on a advert which showed a drunk driving car crash in the 90s, that's why it scared me.

Kreeshsheesh · 16/04/2017 22:00

The Open University titles. The logo scares me now. I'm 43. Confused

Asmoto · 16/04/2017 22:01

The song 'The Runaway Train' (went over the tracks and she blew etc). I used to hide when it was played on 'Children's Choice'.

I once had a dream about getting an electric shock from a dry bath sponge, and for a while believed this would happen if I touched one.

My mum told me that as a baby, I used to cry whenever she played her Incredible String Band albums, but I don't remember that and really like ISB these days.

BlueThursday · 16/04/2017 22:04

The monster munch monsters; I used to have dreams they'd come up through the canal behind our house and get me.

And the Yorkshire TV logo Confused

laurzj82 · 16/04/2017 22:07

I have never told anyone about the Casualty Theme Tune. So glad I'm not the only wuss one!

zukiecat · 16/04/2017 22:07

I hate Dr Who now and haven't watched it since I was about 9, but there was The Green Slime

I don't know the proper name but it slimed about everywhere, over door handles and every other possible surface, it left no visible trace but if you touched any surface where it had been, you turned into the slime too

I was absolutely petrified that the slime had been everywhere, in my home, under my bed, in my bed, just all over,

I was so scared it was going to get me!

Kornerkutta · 16/04/2017 22:12

Sooty. Scary mute bear!

MadisonAvenue · 16/04/2017 22:12

Escalators, especially ones going down.
Hector the dog from Hector's House.

Weird things that scared you as a child...
Eveninties · 16/04/2017 22:13

snooks those photos make me feel seriously uncomfortable, and yet they totally fascinating me

zukiecat · 16/04/2017 22:13

There was also a Scottish serial killer called Bible John, we didn't know anything about serial killers as kids, or what he had done, we had obviously heard our parents talking about him

We would terrify ourselves and each other by saying "Bible John" will get you, I lived in a tenement til I was 8, with an outside toilet and we were all convinced that Bible John would get us if we went to the loo (or anywhere else) alone

Albatross26 · 16/04/2017 22:14

Windscreen wipers on the car! Reminded me of big spiders legs

Asmoto · 16/04/2017 22:14

BlueThursday Ah, yes, those old TV logos! I didn't mind the YTV logo, but the one was very sinister - those scary eyes!

discobear · 16/04/2017 22:15

Also the tales of the unexpected theme tune!

A wind chime that was just inside my grandparents front door.

Leeches horrible blood sucking little buggers, I even used to check my bed for them every night 😳
