To find the increasing humanisation of animals ridiculous?

I will start by saying that I am a huge animal lover. I studied animal care at college, have worked in a boarding kennels and volunteered at my local city Farm.

I totally understand the bond between humans and their pets and know people wish to treat them on occasion. However on visiting a local pet shop today I find dog perfume, cat and dog beer and wine, including something called pursecco and bottom sniffer, along with full size dog easter eggs for sale! Not to mention the little outfits they sell for dogs.
Am I being unreasonable in thinking the humanisation of animals has gone just a little far?

If I saw someone wearing their dog in a baby sling, I'd feel the same as I would if I saw an adult with one of those reborn dolls.
A kind of horrified pity, and an assumption that there was some tragedy in their lives relating to a real child, or lack of one.

I don't think there is any harm in it at all. I probably care more about animals than a lot of people. But that's the fault of other people.

Chocolate is not good for dogs.

This thread has been enlightening. I now know why my partner is not so keen to walk the dog.

I think I'll do a smash cake photo shoot for my dog's birthday!

Mammysin · 14/04/2017 17:39

It's anthropomorphism, as long as foxes aren't compelled to wear waistcoats or are forced to poo to meet doggy perfume demands 😀What's the prob? I have children and a babydog , I know who I prefer to watch unsuitable telly with!

It feels like a sign that our culture had really lost itself up it's own arse.

The dogs will enjoy sniffing that Grin

I don't remember anyone dressing their dogs up in outfits and buying strange stuff for them when I was growing up. It must be a fairly recent development.

kathkim · 14/04/2017 17:43

Yes, it's become a "thing" I think.

We have a doggy rucksack but it's because he's old and we live in Cumbria and I can't bear to leave him at home when we do a long walk because he loves being out so much, so we pop him in the rucksack when he gets tired. Now we have 9 week old DS in a sling as well I'm just waiting for the peculiar looks Grin

My dog would wear cat poo perfume while eating cat poo snacks. Pooperami.

Reminds me of the saying, the more I see of people, the more I love my dog.

Gottagetmoving · 14/04/2017 17:57

People who buy all this crap for their pets are not animal lovers. They are superficial and sad.

Sparklingbrook · 14/04/2017 17:57

I care for my cat by feeding her, grooming her and taking her to the vets for vaccinations and check ups. She likes the occasional stroke and cuddle. That's all she needs. She's a cat.

People being overinvested in their pets is the reason why that twatting supervet is worth millions.

And I say that as someone who has a menagerie of animals including a dog and ponies. It starts with cute costumes and ends with prosthetics for 10 year old spaniels with bone cancer. And chemo.

I would never put an animal of mine through surgery like that and then the cancer treatment when people chose not to have it. Ffs.

shesnotme · 14/04/2017 18:14

I asked my dcats if I should undress them. They were apawled. They said to tell you they are purrfect darling🙄😻

floraeasy · 14/04/2017 18:17

Your dcats realised they came within a whisker of walking around.....GASP!!!.... NAKED Bet that give them pawse for thought Grin

shesnotme · 14/04/2017 18:18

shesnotme · 14/04/2017 18:18

Must admit my dog just looks humiliated in his outfits. But he has no taste. 😂

floraeasy · 14/04/2017 18:19

I'm sure you wouldn't want your dcats to walk around showing their pussies for the world...!
