Sorry for the rubbish title but I couldn't see a new thread!

The movie - 'Dr Strangelove' is currently on Netflix, Ginger. If you have access to that, I would most earnestly recommend that you watch it. Smile

HelsinkiLights · 15/04/2017 12:48

The Security Services will not put the Queen in a carriage with Trump, however much he blusters/protests/threatens.

I can imagine Her Maj saying, "Mr President the SIS computers say No" complete with eye roll.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 15/04/2017 12:57

I wouldn't want the Queen trapped alone in a carriage with a self-confessed "pussy grabber" (= sex offender), let alone the security aspects. The man's a menace!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2017 12:59

I'm definitely going to be there protesting. Perhaps I should place mark with a small shit in front of him?

Last protest I was on, I got talking to a nice police chappy. He asked if I was going to be protesting Trump when he got here. I said that I'll be stalking him.
Then realised that might not have been the best thing to say to a policeman. Grin

CaveMum · 15/04/2017 13:01

I second the suggestion of watching Dr Strangelove, it's one of my favourite films of all time. They often say Kubrick made the perfect film for each genre - SciFi, Horror, etc. This is the perfect black comedy.

I will also try and make it up but it really depends on what day the stupid procession takes place. Fingers crossed it's either a weekend day or the Tuesday!

You kind of forget that's happening in the background of what else is happening at the moment. But if he does make it over here, he is going to be met by strong protests everywhere he goes!

cozietoesie · 15/04/2017 13:13

Folks. I'd really ignore this October stuff. If it takes place, there would be plenty of time to discuss it or plan. It's distraction coming now as it does.

SanFranBear · 15/04/2017 13:13

I see the death toll from the Afghan bomb has almost tripled... so that is something:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-39607213

I was catching up on the thread with DD (7) hanging over my shoulder so she naturally asked what's been going on. Trying to age appropriately explain how he's dropped two bombs (I know missiles were used in Syria but I honk they sound scarier!) but it's not as awful as it sounds. After trying to explain why they were dropped, both DC decided that Scrotus is going to save the world - rapidly explained why that wasn't true. But it's so hard getting the level right.

My ExH has made it clear that he doesn't think they're old enough to know anything about it and I'm scaring them unnecessarily. But I think they're at least informed (and much much better than he is) and I think once you're school age, you need to foster yhat enquiring mind. I only tell when asked - or when I'm upset about something that has happened.

I know we talked a few pages back about how to speak to kids about it. I don't know how either but it is essential they know more than what is happening in the little bubble. If his state visit is at a weekend, they will be coming to share their voice.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 15/04/2017 13:14

It's hard to imagine what the state of affairs will be in October but I'll certainly be protesting if he makes it over here.

I don't know if these are serious allegations but it's disheartening that Schumer and Bharara are under investigation. Even if it's a smear campaign, it muddies the waters and would use up vital energy that could be focused on more pressing issues. (unless they don't take it seriously and so no energy is expended!)

Turkey probes senator, ex-CIA director over links to cleric

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey's state-run news agency says the Istanbul chief prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into 17 U.S.-based individuals, including Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara and ex-CIA director John Brennan, for their alleged links to cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Just reading an article about how New Zealand is using its isolation as a draw card to attract the best IT people...
Donny wants to go in a golden carriage. He is like the worst kind of fairytale villain.
I think the immediate concerns are
North Korea
Syria
Russia
And China waiting for every western country to implode.

EffinElle · 15/04/2017 13:36

I'm hoping all these bombs fail!

I can imagine Lizzie or Tess asking on AIBU about a visitor from the States who one of them invited to visit, hoping they never would, but now they're coming and they don't know how to say no to some of the visitor's demands.

Worse still: "a work colleague asked the visitor and now I have to entertain them too."

Collective answer:
"That doesn't work for me."
"'No' is a complete sentence"

GingerIvy · 15/04/2017 16:03

I would have thought that him using the carriage would put the carriage at risk. It's an expensive piece of history and if there were riots or attacks of any kind, it could damage the carriage. Wouldn't that go over well with the people in the UK?

GingerIvy · 15/04/2017 16:04

Is there a tactful way for them to tell him "sorry, mate, but if you get shot, we don't want you bleeding all over the carriage?" Grin

Sure, Melania will 'move' to the WH when school's out. Then she'll move right back to NY when school starts again saying that for her son's benefit, they wish him to keep attending his same school. (Which is fine)

Summer vacation here is usually only 8-10 weeks. The WH is pretty big and 'traditionally' POTUS and FLOTUS have separate bedrooms, although I'm sure many of the first couples have actually used only one of them Wink. So she'll have her own 'space'. And I'm sure that Melania and Barron will be spending a week or two (sans Scrotus) at Mar-a-Lago as well as other outings. In short, I'm sure she'll be able to avoid him almost as much as she does now!

The idea of Scrotus clip-clopping up the Mall in one of the State Carriages giving his poor imitation of the 'royal wave' and imagining himself wearing a crown makes me veer from hilarity to nausea.

I've really never paid attention, is this something that traditionally has been part of State Visits? I only remember seeing the carriages out for weddings, the opening of Parliament, or other 'occasions' for the Royal Family.

They have years of intercepts of Manafort talking to the Russians. Years. The Germans handed over a decades worth.

GingerIvy · 15/04/2017 16:35

Across I've only seen it for those types of events as well. NOT for State visits.

I think if Melania lives separately in NY with her son, then she and Trump should pay the bill. Sorry, but the secret service detail cost is ridiculous.

Georgia on Tuesday looks intriguing. It would be amazing if the Dems won it, but I'm not getting too excited yet.
