nuclear attack on britain- how likely

blackbunny · 13/04/2017 21:10

Posting this in AIBU for traffic.
With all the current unrest in the world, I've found myself obsessing today about the possibility of Britain being attacked.
Now, I suffer from depression and anxiety that is controlled by ADs. My husband has serious health issues, undergoing chemo atm and I'm naturally worried about the outcome. Till today, I've been coping with my feelings and emotions well. But today, seemingly out of the blue I'm haunted by the fear of a nuclear attack, can't seem to shake off the feelings of dread and fear.
I know in my head the reality is remote, but I suppose what I need to hear is that that is right.
Can anybody reassure me? Please help.

Inspired by this thread I watched some videos on youtube, tinhatranch I think the guy was called. I've learned how to build a shelter in my home and calculate the time it would take for the fall out to reach me, depending on what type of bomb and it's size. You can all mock me if you want but I'm off to join the preppers Easter Grin

angelcakerocks · 15/04/2017 17:04

I think you'd have more cause to worry if you lived in South Korea. We Brits tend to overestimate our own importance imo.

Anyway my stockpile would consist of: booze and maybe some fags for me (why not) and a shedloads of sweets for the kids. May as well make the most of it.

NameChanger22 · 15/04/2017 17:18

Spankhurst - I think aspirin would be a terrible way to die - very slow and painful. I'll take my chances in the nuclear wasteland. I might take up smoking again though.

sonjadog · 15/04/2017 17:29

Tbh, if I heard a nuclear bomb was on its way to where I live, I´d run out to meet it. Much rather die immediately than live in the aftermath.

But this is not something you need to be worried about, OP, as many posters have already said. It won´t happen.

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 15/04/2017 18:25

Why don't people read the full thread or realise that by 9 pages in someone might have already mentioned MAD or a list of known nuclear states? That kind of thing always feels like a 40 year old man telling a bunch of 15 year old girls why they are wrong about periods 🙄

MozzchopsThirty · 16/04/2017 00:00

Quick question!

Would you travel to southern china next week?

TheNiffler · 16/04/2017 00:29

Interesting point about the Channel Tunnel, I've often said that the Dartford crossings are a very weak point. How easy would it be to use a car bomb in the tunnels, or on the bridge. Combine it with bond I. other mai bridges, and you've got chaos and carnage, and a fair size infrastructure blow.

QuestionableMouse · 16/04/2017 00:44

Don't say that, I'm driving through there in which couple of weeks!

sonjadog · 16/04/2017 05:43

Mozzchops - yes, absolutely. Why are you worried about south China?

dementedma · 16/04/2017 08:38

mozzchops my brother left this morning to live and work in China for the next year. You can't let fears rule your life.

Polarbearflavour · 16/04/2017 08:49

I work in a government department that is really into this Wink

Nobody at work is panicking and I work for someone pretty senior!

Dozer · 16/04/2017 08:51

Polar, if you're a civil servant it's not appropriate for you to post that.

Polarbearflavour · 16/04/2017 09:03

Not a civil servant.

Or I could be a North Korean spy just making it up.

Who knows!

bugattiveyron · 16/04/2017 09:37

Polar, if you're a civil servant it's not appropriate for you to post that.

They have hardly given away state secrets, for all you know it's rubbish.
I work in Cheltenham and work is, errm, interesting at the moment.

Dozer · 16/04/2017 09:43

It's still not appropriate.

LurkingHusband · 16/04/2017 10:00

What the people think is irrelevant to the NK dictators since they don't care what their people think as long as they do as they are told.

I think the "N" and "U" keys on your keyboard have been swapped over.

aprilsdelight · 16/04/2017 10:36

bug in what way "interesting"? statements implying something's going on can easily scare lots of people.

EnjoyYourVegetables · 16/04/2017 12:06

Yeah lurking, UK just like NK..

I read a very interesting book on escapees from NK regime called Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick.

(Not much like the UK at all funnily enough.)

bugattiveyron · 16/04/2017 12:24

Just that, I mean somebody can say something that is rubbish and they can be making it up so people need to not take it at face value. My work (nothing to do with anything abroad) is hectic at the moment, that's it.

aprilsdelight · 16/04/2017 12:42

Oh ok, at the moment i'm feeling everything will work itself out but then i start getting all jittery and thinking it's all spinning out of controI.....I knew it was going to be like this as soon as i heard Trump had been made president. I'm afraid it's going to be 4 years of hell (if we live that long). It's just the unpredictability of the man.

Mo55chop5 · 16/04/2017 12:49

Highly unlikely. If that fat little prick in NKorea so much as lets off a firework that strays out his airspace, Pyongyang will be turned into a glowing crater within 15 minutes

aprilsdelight · 16/04/2017 12:56

But he seems crazy enough to do that doesn't he?

bugattiveyron · 16/04/2017 13:19

aprils I do think he's fairly crazy but I don't think he's suicidal which he'd have to be to risk launching a missile that was a real danger to nearby countries.

bugattiveyron · 16/04/2017 13:19

Hit send too soon; to clarify - he's launching missiles into the sea yet, if he was truly crazy, he'd be launching them at SK.

MusterMark · 16/04/2017 15:28

I don't think the NK regime is crazy at all. After Iraq, acquiring nuclear weapons is completely rational. The USA would never attack a nuclear power. Despite the posturing, the strategy is defensive not offensive.
