to give up on finding a pair of jeans that fit me

I have been on this mission for nearly 2 years. Angry trying on jeans in all shops over the UK 😛

I'm not the skinniest of women but should I have to be a size 10 to find something decent, comfortable, flattering and affordable. is this a pipedream? All the other jeans wearers hate all their jeans too?

I am a size 14-16. When slimmer I still have a big bum and big legs but slimmer waist and it's still the same problem. I also am not well off so want affordable jeans (high street prices).

The problems I am encountering:

-Stretchy jeans often seem to be very thin, look like leggings and look cheap and unflattering on me
-Thicker yet still stretchy jeans seem to not fit well on the waistband, (which is rigid) if regular waist and sitting down/bending is agonising.
-High waisted jeans seem to produce an unflattering kangaroo pouch effect around the crotch area, right?

  • The next sized up jeans (16) are a bit baggy and once the denim loosens up I am constantly yanking them up by the waistband

Where do you all buy your jeans?

Can I recommend Lands End? I've been buying their jeans for about 25 years now. The rise and length is right for me, although I do wish they would offer a 29" inside leg as opposed to just a 30 for the vertically challenged like me. The jeans last for years literally; I still have some from when ds was 3. He will be 22 this year.

JaneEyre70 · 11/04/2017 10:05

The M & S ones are good but make sure you buy the longest length as they are horribly prone to shrinking. Mine are all at least 3" shorter than when I bought them and I'd get them elsewhere but they are the only good fit in the legs and waist annoyingly. I have to wear boots with them to hide the length Grin.

LoveForTulips · 11/04/2017 10:06

I love Next 'enhancer' jeans, a little bit more expensive but are really worth it!
I have recently tried to find the same jeans in a darker colour, but don't think Next still do this style!
The hunt continues.

MiniMaxi · 11/04/2017 10:06

If you haven't already, try Gap 1969 True Skinny... Works for me and similar size

19lottie82 · 11/04/2017 10:12

Hi OP I'm a 14-16 too and always go back to Gap high waist skinnies. You can get them in a dark denim and they're not so high that you get a pouch as you described.

MoonGeek · 11/04/2017 10:12

I hate any stretch in jeans so it took me ages to find my perfect pair. So hard to find rigid denim these days. I ended up with a pair of boys age 12 jeans which were also quite cheap. So I would recommend considering boys' or men's ranges.

GeminiRising · 11/04/2017 10:13

I've found Next jeans to be a really good fit. Plus they wash well and retain their colour (I have black ones)

Also try Yours. I had a lovely pair from there last year.

QueenOlivine · 11/04/2017 10:19

Next off ebay, because then I get older styles that seem to work better. I'm a 14, big bum and thighs, smaller waist. The ones that fit me best are relaxed skinny. My other well-fitting jeans are Boden straight leg or slim leg.

I'd also like to try the Levi curve ones and have a proper fitting, when I have the time/money.

FlappyFish · 11/04/2017 10:30

I really like the Next 360 jeans. Super thick, but stretchy and they don't sag anywhere.

Dreardre · 11/04/2017 10:32

NYDJ (not your daughter's jeans) are your new friend. eBay for good quality second hand or buy new online.

QuodPeriitPeriit · 11/04/2017 10:41

I also love NYDJ - they are expensive, but worth it. They have enough stretch to be comfortable, but are firm enough to hold in the wobbly bits. I find they last wel, unlike PP. They are the only jeans I buy now, I would rather have fewer really good jeans than lots of cheap ones that don't fit properly or are uncomfortable.

QuodPeriitPeriit · 11/04/2017 10:42

They are American sizes - I am 16, but take 12 in NYDJ.

Jaynesworld · 11/04/2017 10:52

Have you thought about buying a decent pair and then get them tailored?

pink1173 · 11/04/2017 10:54

I am a similar size and Sainsbury's skinny jeans are a dream. And only £14!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 11/04/2017 11:15

My sister had a pair custom made for her at Selfridges a few years ago. She said it was a bit dear but considering it put a stop to buying cheaper ones on a regular basis they've paid for themselves. I do t know if they still do them but worth finding out.

Littlecaf · 11/04/2017 11:20

Oasis. Not too skinny (so you can still breathe) and not too stretchy so the are proper denim rather than jeggings. Also M&S Limited Edition jeans have a contemporary cut without being too mumsy.

allmycats · 11/04/2017 11:23

I find that Asda jeans are good for everyday wear and Hobbs are also good for better quality jeans, both last well and fit my size 12, large waist, skinny hips well and have a proper rise that does a good job in disguising the tummy. I have bought NYDJ in the past and found that to be absolute shit - went baggy and rubbed up within 3 washes, if they had not been cheap from T K Max they would have gone back to the shop.

londonmummy1966 · 11/04/2017 11:29

I used to love NYJD and live in them but the quality has really fallen off in the last couple of years. I find the denim wears through in about 3 months. For those saying the lycra goes - a lady at John Lewis told me you should never wash them with conditioner as it affects the stretch. So I too am looking for decent jeans and trousers. I did buy a nicely tailored pair of wide leg linen ones in Monsoon at the weekend but you couldn't live in them all year round...

Wiifitmama · 11/04/2017 11:33

I gave up on jeans years ago. I am short, small waisted but with (normal I think!) curves around the hip and butt. All jeans are too tight at the front and gape at the back. I wear nice short skirts with leggings now instead. comfy, flattering and versatile.

previously1474etc · 11/04/2017 11:39

I have been trying to find jeans for more than 5 years, similar shape to OP, heavy thighs, small waist. I have some Per Una jeans, they fall down as they have no shape, they are straight from hips to waist, no actual shape for the waist at all.

ASDA jeans are all too short in the rise, none of them reach my waist.

I don't want skinny jeans or jeggings, they are not flattering. I also find NYDJ are poor quality.

I have been struggling to find jeans that fit since the high waisted ones from early 2000's, there don't seem to be any that are high enough to reach my waist, never mind stay there when I move.

Magna · 11/04/2017 11:45

I was having the same problem and found Primark Mom jeans are brilliant and they do them in black as well

Bluntness100 · 11/04/2017 11:47

I'd just buy a pair that fit in the legs and for length then have them altered at the waist, won't cost much or take long and then they should fit perfectly.

Name7 · 11/04/2017 11:51

Another one recommending Next 360. I'm bigger than you at size 22 but have the same waist issue. They are so comfortable and flattering. Wash really well and go in the tumble dryer. Best jeans I've ever had.

MadamPatti · 11/04/2017 11:51

I have recently discovered per una slim kick flare. Hate skinnies, want to move away from wide leg. Natural waistline so no muffin top (low rise) or making my body look too short (high waist - I'm under 5').

Hope you find what you're looking for.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 11/04/2017 11:53

I've had the same problem but have found Matalan 'Jessie' jeans to be the best
