I am just being a tad curious and nosy.

What jobs do you do that mean you can work from home?
And does it pay decently?

Social worker older adults, I go in to the office most days but can work from home. Some people only go into the office when they have to. Pay starts at 23k for newly qualified. Can be very stressful, particularly when you worried about someone (e.g. Mr X at risk of falling), I like my oldies and probably worry too much about them.

grosseconnasse · 10/04/2017 19:13

Freelance translator, I earn a decent amount but would like to earn more. Need to increase my rates and find better clients!

DH is a sales and business development manager, he earns more than me and spends a lot of time on the phone to existing and potential customers, selling them stuff. He goes to the office about once a fortnight, and has a meeting with customers probably once or twice a week.

Hoppinggreen · 10/04/2017 19:18

Freelance business development
My main client is very local to me so if need to go to their office it's 5 minutes away. The rest if the time I'm at home
Work 15 hours a week and get about £2000 per month
Occasionally I pick up a bit of training or Recruitment work which I charge between £300 - £2000 for on top of my regular work.
I found all school pick ups/drop offs, never miss a school event and walk my dog twice a day
Love it

ollieplimsoles · 10/04/2017 19:23

I'm a children's illustrator, work 100% from home. Ive done book deals with publishers in Korea, USA, Australia and Europe, all from my little home office!

SabineUndine · 10/04/2017 19:26

Any job that consists of working on a computer and having meetings. You dial into the meetings via Skype. I'm based in the UK and could work from home if I wanted, but I don't. It's isolating. I've had colleagues move abroad and continue to work for my employer, but one of them left after a couple of months because she was lonely.

catlitterinmyturnups · 10/04/2017 19:39

I'm an author-illustrator. Pay fluctuates, but work fits around the kids and I'm there for the school run/sick days/holidays. Slowly built it up since my second child was born in 2013, hoping to make more of it once he starts school in September.

Buddah101 · 10/04/2017 19:41

I'm a seamstress, having been made redundant I set up my own business specialising in bespoke bridesmaids dresses.

I now have my designs in various bridal shops around my area and will go in to do fittings and appts as necessary. Took a while to build up but getting decent wages now after nearly 2 years.

steff13 · 10/04/2017 19:44

I conduct public assistance hearings (in the US). I occasionally go and do the hearings face to face, if the appellant has requested to be heard face to face, but mostly I do it from home. It's a government job, so the benefits are excellent, and it pays quite well too.

joystir59 · 10/04/2017 19:50

Free lance mosaic artist. I have a studio but also work from home on designs. paperwork several days a week

shirleycartersaidso · 10/04/2017 20:40

Bid manager. 2 days a week at home. 55k.

I could eat more but the flexibility is worth not earning more at the moment while the kids are still small.

clairethewitch70 · 10/04/2017 20:45

Company Secretary, full time from home. Runs the accounts of my husbands printing business. Started working at home at 5 months pregnant, DS1 is now 21, and haven't worked a day in the office since.

Eebahgumlass · 10/04/2017 20:56

Marketing Communications. I earn 50k for a 4 day week and work entirely from home. It can be lonely but I don't think I could manage without the flexibility

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/04/2017 20:59

Academic related work in a university I can work from home 30% of the time whenever I choose or more if I ask. Salary is 50k full time, but I'm very specialised in terms of qualifications and I have 20 years experience.

WhooooAmI24601 · 10/04/2017 21:21

I teach but DH is a management consultant and works from home as little or as much as he likes. He travels, too, but again it's up to him.

It pays incredibly well; I earn in a month what he earns in three days.

purpleporpoise · 10/04/2017 21:29

IT software support. Pays reasonably well. Not too lonely as lots of conference calls, Skype chats etc

BoredOnMatLeave · 10/04/2017 21:38

Finance manager - wfh 2 days. £30k fte. Don't think I could handle being in the office all the time I stay in my pjs

Sammysquiz · 10/04/2017 21:41

I do accountancy and bookkeeping. Have to go out and meet clients occasionally, but the rest of the time I work from home.

CookieDoughKid · 10/04/2017 21:47

Commercial Development for Software company. I wfh as much as I like but occasionally go into London and local office once or twice a week. Flexible hours so I choose when I work but I do about 40 hours a week. I get about £85k a year and annual commissions up to 20% of salary as well as matched pensions up to 10% so it's not bad.

Chickendipper12 · 10/04/2017 21:49

Musician

CookieDoughKid · 10/04/2017 21:51

Dh is also a management consultant and wfh in a 6 figure salary. Have a friend who is chief executive of company that prints money and wfh a bit. All those I know on big money and flexi works have got there by changing jobs frequently and asking for big pay rises. The senior you are easier it is to wfh and choose your own hours.

MrsBobtonTrent · 10/04/2017 21:59

I sell stuff on the internet. It took a while to learn what sells in my market, and to build it up, source stock at the right price, set up fulfilment etc. But it fits in around the children and school events, hospital appointments, sick children etc. I take home 6 figures. I enjoy the lack of human contact tbh!

StandAndBeCounted · 10/04/2017 22:05

Well I just googled what a bid manager is ... Yeh. I cant do that. But 6 figures for selling stuff on the internet?! Tell us more MrsBobton!

Want2bSupermum · 10/04/2017 22:26

MrsTrent I am thinking to go into that. Friends of ours are making $200k a year selling t-shirts online. They are the I heart NY t-shirts and the like.

They do their own distribution and not amazon or ebay, which they said really cuts into margins. The have a dedicated UPS person come to their home everyday as they have about 300 shipments for delivery.

Polarbearflavour · 10/04/2017 22:29

Executive Assistant - one or two days a week from home.

Pigface1 · 10/04/2017 22:44

Solicitor in City. I can work one day a week from home if workload permits. If there are any client commitments or deadlines etc then I have to go in.

I love the idea of WFH, but in practice, when I actually do it, I find that I get bored and lonely and then really anxious!
