AIBU to wonder why my kids can't play without supervision

I left my kids, son (6) and daughter (2 1/2) in the garden on their own for 5 minutes while I got their lunch ready. In that short time they soaked each other with water, poured sand over each other heads and broke a toy.
There are kids my son's age and maybe a bit older than my daughter running around the area (parents from council housing don't check on them all afternoon) and they seem to be OK.
What have I done wrong with mine?

Why the fuck does the council housing need mentioning?

And because they are 6 and 2. It's what kids do.

Angryangryyoungwoman · 10/04/2017 13:07

Council housing is obviously the solution then, just move house

watchoutformybutt · 10/04/2017 13:08

Cause they're kids?
My 4 and 21 month old did exactly the same yesterday apart from the broken toy. Soaking each other and chucking sand is fun for them. Tell them to go get changed into dry clothes and wash their hair tonight... jobs a goodun.
I won't comment on the council house children Confused

Nameideas · 10/04/2017 13:09

You need to move to council housing. That is where you have gone wrong. Get thee to the council office sharpish where a key to your council house (together with free carpets, goat, large screen TV).

They are only little. They will get up to no good now and then. Relax

watchoutformybutt · 10/04/2017 13:10

nameideas they do goats now?!

aniceglassofchianti · 10/04/2017 13:10

not brought them up as well as the "council people", that is where you have gone wrong

aniceglassofchianti · 10/04/2017 13:11

goat?

Nameideas · 10/04/2017 13:11

*where a key to your council house will be waiting.

Nameideas · 10/04/2017 13:12

Yes, you get a free goat nowadays. I have one. 😀

2014newme · 10/04/2017 13:13

Because they are 6 and 2.
Where did they get the water from?

TheRealPooTroll · 10/04/2017 13:14

Ignoring the random council housing comment if the toy wasn't broken deliberately I'd just consider that playing? Maybe discourage the sand over the heads in case it goes in their eyes.

Mulberry72 · 10/04/2017 13:15

Living in a council house clearly equals better behaved children Hmm

Better get your name on the waiting list quick!

00100001 · 10/04/2017 13:15

You've molly coddled them

Marmalade85 · 10/04/2017 13:16

Being brought up 'councily' makes you more self sufficient as you're often neglected and raised by a big screen telly and staffy dog. Hmm

whatisgoingon1 · 10/04/2017 13:17

The council housing comment is not really random tho.OP is a snob.

Violetcharlotte · 10/04/2017 13:19

Council house kids are obviously better behaved than yours Hmm

Bumbumtaloo · 10/04/2017 13:21

Oh shit this is where we've been going wrong Shock I must remind DH that because we live in a council - well housing association if we're nit picking - bungalow that we should leave our DC to play all afternoon and not check on them. Thanks for the heads up OP!

CallousAndStrange · 10/04/2017 13:23

They're kids? They were playing? I'm not seeing the problem.

multivac · 10/04/2017 13:35

Your kids are more badly behaved than council house children?!

Blimey. You've really buggered this parenting lark up, haven't you?

FrenchJunebug · 10/04/2017 13:35

are you for real?! YABU for the council house comment and for wondering why your kids are acting like kids.

SquinkiesRule · 10/04/2017 13:36

Nothing wrong with being wet or covered in sand, leave them to it.

smallchanceofrain · 10/04/2017 13:38

If I had known about the goat I'd have had my name on the council list years ago. I'm in Yorkshire. All you get here is a whippet and a bath to keep your coal in.
Seriously OP, you left children of that age playing in the garden and expect them not to play? You could turf them out onto the street to play with the council house children - who will be able to model good behaviour for them to emulate!

mata777 · 10/04/2017 13:39

I didn't mean to offend anyone by the council housing comment, I just said their are the only kids who will play outside without supervision for a long time... I was wondering if it is that mine usually have my around and not learned the skills to play on their own? I wasn't looking for an argument (and I am not a snob).

Well for a start you left a 6 year old supervising a 2 year old with water around. Fab parenting Op Just count yourself lucky little one didn't drown ffs

2014newme · 10/04/2017 13:40

How did they have access to water?
