AIBU to wonder why my kids can't play without supervision

mata777 · 10/04/2017 13:05

I left my kids, son (6) and daughter (2 1/2) in the garden on their own for 5 minutes while I got their lunch ready. In that short time they soaked each other with water, poured sand over each other heads and broke a toy.
There are kids my son's age and maybe a bit older than my daughter running around the area (parents from council housing don't check on them all afternoon) and they seem to be OK.
What have I done wrong with mine?

Tells you more about us by taking offence at your sneering of council housed folks ?

Marmalade85 · 10/04/2017 17:40

I let my kids play out for so long they got taken away by people in council housing. Now I never have to supervise them

If you show me that rates are similar to the private market rates, fair enough , but so far all the ones I have seen are at least 2/3 cheaper and that's for people with high salaries. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong.

TheFirstMrsDV · 10/04/2017 18:30

The rents are cheaper than 'market rate'.
That doesn't mean they are free.
The rents are no subsidised by you either.
Many areas means test for council housing.

How much do you actually know about social housing?

WildBelle · 10/04/2017 18:43

I've lived in a HA house for 3.5 years and I'm still waiting for my goat.

Something to do with austerity, apparently. Fucking tories.

brasty · 10/04/2017 19:01

Rents are set at the amount needed for the upkeep, rather than to make a profit.

DaisyQueen · 10/04/2017 19:01

photograph without revealing where I live it was tricky but this is the general gist. Plus we live in an area with cheaper rents because the job market and wages are utter shit!

I don't live in a council house but I do live on benefits.

I'm confused. Do I get a goat or what?

Also how much should I be watching my children?

Does being in a council house area and on benefits mean they will naturally be able to survive Bear Grylls style on the streets?

Because I feel cheated. All this time I've been feeding them!

mata777 · 10/04/2017 19:08

I came on MN to ask for advice ... I don't need this bitchiness in my life - I won't be posting again. Bye Mumsnet!

DaisyQueen I know that getting a property might be means tested, but keeping it isn't. Without revealing too much either, I do know people on the highest tax rates with a £650 monthly rent! So in this area, yes, it's nearly free.

Look in London, when in the same streets studio flats go for more than £1million whilst the council flats go for a lot less.

Might as well throw a couple of goats as well.

DaisyQueen · 10/04/2017 19:42

But you are assuming that every area operates in the same way. As I said where I live we pay less than market rate but not substantially under. For me the only plus of a council house is the security. The actual council are useless.

TheFirstMrsDV · 10/04/2017 19:44

Since when has £650 been 'nearly free'?

A studio flat going for 1 million is obscene. Thank the Lord for Social Housing meaning that ordinary people are allowed to live in places like London.
Its not a theme park for rich people

pennypickle · 10/04/2017 19:48

You have to post on MN because you are upset that your 6 and 2 year olds planted some sand (assuming from a sand pit that you bought?) on each other's heads? FFS don't take them to the beach OP!

Kids are messy creatures. Mums deal with it - honest!! 😐

Changingagain · 10/04/2017 20:09

My toddler would love a goat 🐐 so I'm off to claim a council house tomorrow. It's perfectly OK to leave the goat to supervise him I assume?

Just in case you do come back to answer your previous question aimed at me, no I do not ever leave my youngest who is three alone near the taps the kitchen or bathroom in our house that would be irresponsible.
You also didn't mention water was because of a tap so the drowning comment was in regards to there being some form of container filled with water. A two year old can drown in a very small amount of water he falls hits his head 6 year old comes running to get you. These things happen.

Since when has £650 been 'nearly free'

when normal people have to pay a minimum of £2,500 for the same place.

hank the Lord for Social Housing meaning that ordinary people are allowed to live in places like London. thankfully, not for very long, things are finally improving the right way.
People will actually have to work for it and afford it with their own money. Like the rest of us have to do, instead of living above your means being subsidised by the tax payer. Hey, don't get me wrong, we all would love to work a quiet job for peanuts and live the high life, I' d be happy in Eaton Square on a part-time job, but this is real life.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 10/04/2017 21:09

You sound like you could do with a goat tbh Grin

WhooooAmI24601 · 10/04/2017 21:16

Do you think your mistake is that instead of playing with your own DC's you're too busy watching the council house DCs of your neighbours?

In all seriousness, if you want your DCs to play nicely, play with them, model the behaviour you want and praise them for kindness, sharing and when they're being lovely. Recognising the good will make them want to do it more. (I say this but the reality is I find sitting on the floor playing with my DCs for too long mind-numbing, so I got a goat to play with them instead and spend my time dicking about on MN instead).
